St. Louis Blues signed Brayden Schenn (8 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
Term is the price they paid to keep the cap hit down. My guess is a 6 year term would have costed $1M AAV more. Without a NTC/NMC, if his play does fall off a cliff they can move him to a cap floor team towards the end of the deal as he makes $4M the last couple years. A buyout of the last two years is also only an average of $2.6M AAV on the cap over those four years. There will likely be a cap spike after the new TV deal and Seattle, so even the back side of the contract won't cripple them if he can maintain at least middle six caliber play for the last half of the contract. Overall, I'd say it's a fair deal.

Colorado Avalanche signed Mikko Rantanen (6 Years / $9,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MJC13</b></div><div>So these last 2 weeks have basically just been every other NHL GM dunking on Dubas.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AndrewLadd</b></div><div>Every RFA signed since Marner has made Kyle Dubas look like a doofus</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SevenLeg</b></div><div>Makes the Marner signing even more horrendous</div></div>
Well, Kyle Dubas basically had no choice after Matthews signed his contract.
First of all, he is the youngest of all GM's, and player agents tear him to pieces because of his inexperience in the NHL. Second of all, Toronto has the highest taxes in the NHL with Ottawa, and that takes away from a player's salary.
For example, Marner's contract is 10.893 million per year. That means he receives about 5 million dollars per year. Rantanen, on the other hand, receives about 5.4 million per year after taxes. Point receives about 4.2 million after taxes because Tampa has no state tax.
So yeah, player negociaions are complicated. But there's no need to bash a GM. The NHL should have a salary cap based on taxes, but the NHL will never allow it.

San Jose Sharks signed Joe Thornton (1 Year / $2,000,000 AAV)
No team wants Marleau, when he gets his agent to ask for one last big contract. Every GM knows the Leafs owed him 4.5 million cash, his buyout got him 3.8 million back to him, so when he asks for 1-2 million all the GM's are like WHAT!!! you want to be the first buyout player to earn more money ? than original contracted. If he accepted 700K he would be a Shark.

He couldn't score a single goal playing with Benn and Seguin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mondo</b></div><div>seriously wonder how these nothing trades come together</div></div>I mean, at the NHL, it might be nothing. but these organizations do have farm teams to run. they have GMs of these AHL farm teams that have to improve their teams, just like the GMs of NHL teams. just because CapFriendly doesn't really cover what happens in the AHL doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed William Nylander (6 Years / $6,962,366 AAV)
Day 1 of the season the (undisputed) rumor was Dubas had offered 8 years x $6.000 million = $48 million
by waiting for 31% of this season, the offer increased to $6.9 million (reported elsewhere) x 6 years, after which he is UFA
=> 5.69 x $6.9 = $39.621
If Willie earns more than $8.7 million at age 28-29 in 2024+2025, he will have made more money.
caveats:
- Willie doesn't sustain a career ending injury
- There is no lockout, or the Day 1 offer did not include being paid with a signing bonus during the lockout year
- He is not traded to a team that is so much worse than the Leafs, so that his lifetime earnings past age 30 with the Leafs ends up being higher than going UFA 2 years earlier
The Leafs' future plans: If they don't want to keep Willie long term, the time to trade him is this season to allow for extending Gardiner+Matthews+Marner and to save 1 protected slot in the Seattle expansion draft
