Lets be sure the blame goes to the guy who structured the contract.
No one's here blaming Kent Hughes for the Return on Petry due to his horrible Contract.
They put the blame where its deserved with Marc Bergavin .
SJS needs to do the same with Wilson who deserves it in this case.</div></div>
Multiple GMs have already been quoted saying the QO isnt an issue. Especially since Meier wasnt just going to sign the QO for one year and then peace out on any decent team. Oh, and there is the fact that the brass in the NHL think he's absolutely worth 10M per season, even though they'll like settle for less on an 8 year.

They should have received a haul for a top 5 W in the league. Grier is just a clown show of a GM. The experts across the league all agree it was a terrible trade for the Sharks. They got one very low first, a B prospect, a bottom 6 winger, and a 2nd for an elite superstar winger in his prime. Holtz, a 1st and roster player isnt a haul, it would have been an acceptable return, instead we got sh*t.

Seriously. It was a terrible trade when I first saw it, and when the expert opinions started coming in it looked worse. Then the Jeannot trade hit and made Grier look like a total disaster of a clown. #FireGrier

It shouldn't, but it always amazes me that fans think teams should just give away their best players for nothing. Anyways, if a top prospect isn't included in a trade for an elite Timo just entering his prime, GMMG just needs to move onto the next team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NMAvsFan</b></div><div>Couture is a good player but he is likely to be on the decline within the next year or so (athletic performance declines dramatically around age 35) so, even if you retained half - which you would need to in order to make him affordable to almost any team that he would agree to go to - it just isn't worth it. He's definitely a player the Sharks are going to have to keep for the life of that contract or very close to it.</div></div>
Recent leaks have expressed NHL brass still think he's a $6M center. He's having a career year and with a better team, he'll be better. Retaining 2-2.5 should be more than enough.

If you are able to jettison Couture, there is no reason not to sign Timo, unless he has made it explicitly clear to GMMG that he doesnt want to play here anymore. If he has expressed to Grier that he doesnt want to stay, then Nemec or Mercer or find someone else to trade with for him.

Sharks decline. Not even in the ballpark. The best piece in the trade has to come close to having the same ceiling as Timo. Not even a combination of all the players will come close. And no prospects? Come on man.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>But again, they are rebuilding. So there is no reason to move his contract right now, they don't need the cap space. They could bury him or shelter him as the 6th or 7th dman and buy out his contract in 1-2- or even 3 years. The cap is set to go up after next season and continue to go up beyond that. His cap hit, whether it is bought out or not, will become more and more negligible. Unless they want to go for a fast paced retool instead of a rebuild and absolutely need the space ASAP, there is no reason to send out a 2nd round pick to move his contract.</div></div>
The team that I have put together is not a rebuilding team and would be a playoff team, and not just a first round out.

GM for a day
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>I definitely wouldn't pay a 2nd for him, but I doubt SJS will have to pay a 2nd to move him. SJS is rebuilding, he is young, and his cap hit is only $3.25M. They are better off waiting and seeing if he can turn things around, rather than throwing away assets to clear space that they don't even need. If nothing else they could bury him or buyout his contract.
But if you really want to do that, CHI accepts.</div></div>
He won’t be able to turn things around. He wasn’t projected to be more than a 6/7 D coming out of school and he’s had enough NHL games now that we know what he’s going to be. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt last season, that playing with Burns was the reason he was bad, but that isn’t the case. After 120 games of just being really really bad, I can’t imagine GMs view him as an NHLer, and definitely not a 3.3M NHLer.
If it will be less than a 2nd round pick I’ll be thrilled. But honestly because of that third year, I’m confident that’s what will be required to take his entire salary.
The buyout option has to much money for too many years on the books and burying only saved $1M. Not substantial enough of a cap savings for either.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CheechYou</b></div><div>Just to clarify, you mean that SJ's receiving a 2nd in exchange for Ferraro, correct? Because you're attaching a 2nd along with Ferraro to ship to CHI for nothing at the moment.
Also, I understand and agree with you on cutting Kunin loose, but SJ doesn't need to retain 1.35mil when they can just buy him out for 250k.</div></div>
Unfortunately I do mean providing a 2nd for Chicago to take that bad contract off of our hands. It’s a real bummer, because I love the dude, but Ferraro has arguably the worst contract on the team at -6.6M market value. I love the personality, but man is he a black whole. I think this franchise hosed him by bringing him up to early, and playing him beside Burns. He’s established a lot of very bad habits and is frequently out of position. It’s pretty easy to see that other franchises realize he’s very bad too, because opposing coaches jump their scoring lines over the boards as soon as he touches the ice. With 3 years left it will take a 2nd round pick.
I thought about the buyout, but I don’t want that extra year when I need to use the $500k cap space to bridge Eklund and Bords.

The NYR have no reason to make that trade. Neither do the Sharks. There’s no reason to not buyout Vlasic. Simek is likely to go on LTIR. He has significant concussion issues.

The only part of this that is accurate is the part that they should have traded Hertl in the off-season. Even that is not 100% a sure thing. The Vlasic and Couture contracts are killing the Sharks. They need to get rid of those. 9M for Meier isn’t going to crush the Sharks future.
