A problem with our D core going into this offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>It is not the amount of turnovers in d-zone. Its the quality!!
It’s (a) where turnovers occur and more importantly (b) that d-zone exit attempts do not turn into possession. So we missing out on the strength of this team.
We are giving up too much quality (ie, losing the puck just inside blue line, very bad; losing puck along boards; not as bad)…not getting quality possession for… Our d-zone exit success rate has taken a nose dive this year. Our o-zone entry rates have been similar… we are just not getting sustained pressure.
In short, too many passes in skates, which isn’t counted as turnover…but is counted as end of possession.</div></div>
Not picking a fight, but what's the difference between a turnover and end of possession?? Are they not the same thing? A turnover to me is losing the puck, hence end of possession.
I definitely agree we are giving up WAY too much quality, but I don't think thats all because of our lack of breaking the puck out clean. We give up more goals off odd-man rushes then opponents' sustained pressure in our zone and we have the worst goals off rebounds rate in the league.
Maybe i'm looking through a microscope at a small problem, but that to me screams 2 things: Not enough shots blocked and not enough stick tie-ups and bodies cleared out front. Graves and Severson were not worlds better as passers compared to our current group, but they always got in front of pucks and did really well battling in the corners and net front. And that to me is what's missing from this group, we are so far from having a physical/gritty backend, that I think teams take us to be the softest d core in the league.

A problem with our D core going into this offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Agree with mixing up styles, adding more shot-blocking.
But Siegs and Marino aren’t really puck movers. Siegenthaler is a one if the best dmen on transition (defending against the rush…his zone denial rate is among league leaders). Marino’s game is more about one-on-one defending, after Nemec, best gap closure on team. Also good against the rush.
The problem is puck protection. Too many exit passes ending up in the skates…and in bad spots. Smith and Bahl have two of the lowest pass completion rates in league. They are both good d-zone defenders, but errant passing out of d-zone leads to higher quality chances against (and hang goalies out to dry)….and offensively, it stalls our transition game in no-man land.
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hanifin - Nemec
Hughes - Marino
…is a solid blueline.
Add weight, heavier play on forecheck…with bottom-six forwards. Don’t sacrifice puck control out of blueline.</div></div>
I disagree on your point about puck protection/dzone giveaways. We give up the 5th fewest turnovers in the Dzone.
And actually to your point about being good off the rush...i dont know their individual numbers, but as a team...we are 5th worst defending against the rush.
That's why I think one of Siegs/Marino needs to go because you aren't going to move Luke or Nemec. We are atrocious defending off the rush

New Jersey Devils 2023-24 Season Discussion Thread #1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>Our PP is too organized, too geared towards set plays. It worked early…but people have video. They have some of the best skilled players on the planet. Just let them improvise.
Also…would be nice to have a right shot on left dot.</div></div>
In regards to the PP, we move around too much. We are so predictable because our skating and circling forces us to only go 1 way with the puck at times. Look at how much Luke skates back and forth on the Blue line and look at how many times we have a winger skate up to the blue line and circle back. It's become way too predictable.
This is where Dougie was solid for us because he would be stationary most times at the top which is what you want. You don't beat PKs by skating with the puck all over the zone, you actually make their job easier doing that because they dont have to move as much. The devils need to move the puck quicker and not skate around with him. And throw pucks in front of the net, just get pucks in front.
You are spot on in terms of us trying to run too many set plays. We also have to be leading the league in chances against and Odd-man rushes against while on a PP. It's terrible.

Why hasnt anyone been inquiring about him
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Howie</b></div><div>How is it an upgrade lol he's been basically an ahler since he was injured. I get paying a late pick for him but not to be a starter he is not that at this point in his career. Tbh it would be better for them to go after fleury with the experience he has and sign dreiger in the offseason. If I was gm I'd play schmid to get him more nhl experience</div></div>
I say its an upgrade because his numbers have been historically solid throughout, I think hes also in the minors because of the 2 goalies above of him and they don't wanna carry 3. Plus its a MUCH cheaper alternative than what the asking prices are for the other goalies around. Fleury would be good too, but Driedger to me is the cheapest goalie with value and yes, he is definitely an upgrade to Vanecek.
Devils give up the 9th fewest Shots Against a game but their save % is 5th worst. So i'll take Dreidger over Vanecek for a few months to end the season here.
To your point on Schmid, he completely has lost his form since the playoff run last year. AHL numbers are awful as well so he needs to get his game back before coming back up.

1 year though and he's playing in the minors putting up much better numbers than Grubauer. I'd give a late round pick to see what he's got. Low cost move plus its def an upgrade and that NTC is getting waived to actually start somewhere before he enters FA

Six million in cap space with Dougie finally placed on LTIR

Goalie: Gibson/Markstrom
Center depth: Lindholm/Henrique
Good left defense, tons potentially available from fringe playoff teams, but unknown as of yet.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>I think defense will be the focus…I am guessing it’s we will spend some assets to address.
We have plenty of centers already on roster…Jack, Nico, Mercer, Haula, Lazar, Tierney…so I don’t think we would spend a lot on adding a 3C or 4C. Maybe we snag Bonino off waivers or similar move.
Goalies will be off-season fix.</div></div>
I don't think this move indicates any trade in the next few days. I think Dougie got moved today because Devils were against the cap and now that McLeod and Foote are out (they still count against the cap), Devils needed to call up a few more players, leading to us not being cap compliant.
So I think this was just a move done now so they were back under the cap after having to call up some extra Utica players and claiming Nick Desimone. (Sorry if someone already said this point, haven't read all the comments yet).

musings on bernier the cap and the roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>I would imagine that one of Johnsson, Tatar, or Bernier gets moved sometime before the deadline. Arizona would probably have some interest in Bernier, especially if he can get into a few games before the deadline to improve his value. Bernier a few weeks before the deadline for FC’s would be fairly beneficial to both teams. Arizona gets a goalie they can flip to a contender wanting goalie depth provided he is healthy and performs well, and NJ gets cap space so they don’t lose any of their players from waiver claims.</div></div>
Arizona is looking for a Backup Goalie, maybe that's a spot for him once he's healthy. Highly doubt they take him on though

It was reported or speculated that the offer was Kyrou+Krug+ a first, which sounds crazy to offer let alone reject (although STL wants to get out of Krug's contract). Personally, I think they would have offered Buchnevich+Krug+ (both have NTCs).
In terms of who is a better player though I would say DeBrincat is the best, then Tkachuk, and then Fiala based off track record alone.</div></div>
If they rejected that offer, I'd have to imagine it's because of Krug in that deal. But that's just me

I gotcha, so essentially the arb filing is just a time extension then? But just to clarify, arb doesn't go into UFA years right? So either way he's a UFA after this year unless he signs long term with CAL before reaching the arb date?

I also think Fitzy said a lot of that stuff in his press conference to drive the asking price down for some of these players. But granted, Fitzy's 'criteria' for a player he's looking for is very specific and VERY scarce in the NHL right now. Although I wonder would he be open to a sign and trade for some of these players especially since there are a good amount of agents at the draft now that it's in person. Still doubt it though.
One thing he mentioned was also trading down if the package/return was right for them so it'll be really interesting to see what happens.

Nah Devils would take out 37 and then it would equal up. So your 2 1sts for our 1st and 3rd. That's the fair value based on Draft Pick Value Chart via TheAthletic.

I agree with you that other GMs are actively interested in Anderson, but Bratt aint the price nor is he getting dealt. And for people who are quoting Fitzy saying the devils need 'harder skill' Bratt is not the person on the way out. 1 thing that Seravelli and Friedman leave out when they talk about Bratt being potentially traded is that at Fitzgerald's End of Year press conference, he talked about how important Bratt is to the team and resigning him is a must. And mentioned multiple times throughout last season and this season that Bratt is part of the main core.

Just a couple notes before people start ripping you:
Johnny will probably sign closer to $10mil per year
Bratt is projected to get around $7mil per year
Zacha has a qualifying offer of around $4.5mil so I doubt he will sign for 3 years at $1mil
Marino is worth way more than a 4th and a cap dump.
And I believe Campbell will fetch closer to $5mil (although this one is just my speculation)
