(SEA/NYR) - Wennberg for 2024 2nd (NYR), 2025 4th (DAL)
4th is standard rate for the retention. But thought the market had set a higher price than a straight 2nd for Wennberg.
Feels a tad underwhelming now, yet at season start if you said Kraken would get that prob would’ve said that seems fair.

I think Seattle pass. Johansen would block Wright out of the roster next year. And the Kraken are looking for assets for the future not veteran rentals.

Perfect Deadline
I think Wennberg with retention will cost at least the 2nd Round pick, and with the Avs and apparently Bruins circling too, I think you'd have to include a prospect too.

Interestingly I think a 2nd and a prospect woudl secure Wennberg with 50% retained - proposed as much myself here: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/811743
However, we've no interest in Goodrow for the next 3 years and certainly not for the compensation of just a 5th and a 6th. You'd need to find someone who actually wants him, which may be a tad difficult.

Wennberg to Rangers
It's unlikely Rangers give up their 1st Round pick. However, I think Francis will shoot for equivalent, if not better value by plumping for a 2nd and a strong prospect.
LW is a position of strength in the Rangers pipeline and they could easily part with one to get this deal done.
Othmann is likely not who they'd want to let go of, but two things bump up the Prospect quality Seattle seek; the cap rentention as it gives NYR space to make another move before the deadline, and the Avs waiting in the wings armed with a 1st that they don't mind moving.

Graves out
I can't speak to the Devils side of this, though I'd be surprised if they took Graves back.
As a Kraken fan you've definitely got me tempted by our side of this deal. I think Ottavainen projects 3rd pair and may be ready to step up to NHL as soon as next season. Brief dig suggests Kangas has similar potential, just a few years behind in the development curve. The 3rd not being until 26 is a bit painful though, ideally want something sooner than that, like your 25 3rd. Or if we are going to wait to 26 then your 2nd round pick instead.
On balance I think if teh pick was tweaked I'd take it. We can pick up a veteran 3rd pair RHD in UFA for not a lot.

Rounding out
I might not agree with it, but the market for playoff rental C has been set at a 1st plus, and I don't see how Wennberg is worth significantly less than Monahan, especially with retention too.
The 3rd, 4th and 7th is laughable!
TBH take the 2nd you were sending Caps for Dowd, pair it with the 4th and you probably have something realistic for Rangers and Kraken.
That said I think we might re-sign him, so unless the offer is a 1st I don't see us giving him up.

Leafs get their Playoff Dman
As a Kraken fan you have my attention just by putting a suggestion through the trade machine, for whatever reason no fans ever seem to want our players!
Timmins is nice but then the RHD don't slot right and we'll be left looking for an upgrade in UFA, which is a fools errand for a top pairing guy.
Voit sounds like he's shown flashes, but he's also injured so he's difficult to assess on a limited body of work.
I think you change Timmins for Liljegren, or Voit for Cowan (who played to a high clip with Kraken prospect Winterton last year), and things get a lot more interesting and I also think it balances the trade better given the Kraken would need to carry the retained $2M cap hit ALL of next year too.
In fact, the value of replacing McCabe as your top RHD for a $3M cap saving as Matthews and Nylanders deals kick in is huge for the Leafs. And arbitration eligible Liljegren is due a raise too...
More I think on it more I think it should be the 1st, Liljegren and Cowan. Hmmmm....
And yet for all that a 1st, a roster player and a prospect is intriguing, I believe Larsson is one player Seattle won't move. He's too important to our D-corps especially given the chemistry he and Dunn have formed since expansion. I fully expect them to re-sign him next Summer for around 3x$5M too, an overpay perhaps, but when a D-pair clicks right it's worth paying them both!
FWIW the 5th for Bellemare is fair, if not generous.

Small moves
It's a package that's got me wondering for Borgen...
Be better with a second 3rd round pick instead of Lagesson.
If Timmins had proven he could stick in a Dcorps and not be the 7th man then we might entertain it.
As it is Kraken have next to no RD depth in their young system and I think Borgen is proving he can be a valuable middle pairing, stay at home Dman for years. So I think we pass. But it's defintely got me considering what Borgen might cost.
Thanks for the food for thought

So a 3rd for taking Brodie's cap dump and 2 more 3rds for Borgen.
Firstly, Kraken don't have the cap space to swallow the cap dump.
Secondly, Borgen has carved out a solid role on the 2nd pairing and we don't have a replacement in the system, so I can only see Seattle parting with him for an active player who isn't on an expiring deal.
It's a No from Francis.

fitz and the tantrum
Putting aside Devils don't need an offensive minded veteran Dman;
1. We aren't about to ship out Joey just as he proves his worth.
2. We already got a 2nd for trading away Vanecek, we're not about to take another to take him back and downgrade our backup on a bad deal somebody else signed.
3. We'll be wanting picks for Schultz, not another expiring D-man in return.
It's a 'never in a million years' from Seattle.

If Kraken are on the outside I can see Wennberg being a pickup for a playoff team looking for an upgrade at 3C and PK.
Fans always concentrate on his statline, but his game is not built on scoring. Shockingly GMs look at other attributes too!
All that said Seattle are not trading him for another player on an expiring $4.5M deal and a prospect C, of which there's a fair few in the farm system.
I'd expect a 2nd round would be the cost, with additional picks if it were to come with any retention.

Devils Get Net Help
Devils may need to make a net move before it's too late. Driedger isn't world-beating, but he's a serviceable option who would be available for not a lot and doesn't hold any commitment long term if it doesn't work.
Trade wouldn't go down until after Winter Classic, just in case anything happens to Grubauer/Daccord before that.
That timing also reduces daily cap hit such that Seattle wouldn't need to retain any salary to get it done.
Given the cap relief this would give the Kraken it may be less than a 3rd round pick, but I think there'll be a couple teams sniffing around Driedger which may cause the value to hold up.

Haha! Thanks for the entertainment, this was fun to read! Francis is just not that aggressive and instead committed to his build thru the draft approach, but it’s interesting to ponder the what-it’s.
As a Kraken fan the bit that really hurts in this proposal is losing Tanev, guy is totally underrated, all heart, excellent PKer and agitator and chips in at a clip for a bottom 6 guy. He’d be difficult to replace.
Cheers for taking time to put this together!

EK65
Sens can’t be expecting to get anything back for the Joseph salary dump, let alone 2 assets! The remaining term is what I think puts the Kraken off taking him, else he fits the mould.
One of the better deals I’ve seen to get EK65 in, and one I think the Sharks would seriously consider. Fly in the ointment is Eberle and Schultz both have M-NTCs and I’d be surprised if they both had Sharks as an available destination.
More generally I don’t think Francis goes for Karlsson, he just doesn’t align with a target contending window and makes the cap more difficult the next few years when it doesn’t need to be.

I think Francis Will Get Karlsson
I can't see Francis dealing for Karlsson. Even at $8.5M he is a BIG risk for 4 seasons and Francis is very protective of his cap flexibility. And the plan is not to compete now, but to target a window from 2-3 years time when Beniers and Wright hit prime years, and Karlsson will have long aged out by then.
I think Dunn's deal will be much more than this, close to $8Mx8 is what I'm expecting, this would deal would be an absolute steal.
And we aren't investing another $5M+ in net. Grubi is the guy, they're not looking to usurp him, he had a good playoffs and we'll be fine if he can bring some of that form to next season.

It's a no.
1. Wright's not ready for Kraken to part with Wennberg yet.
2. Karlsson is a BIG risk even at $8M for 4 seasons and Francis is very protective of his cap flexibility.
3. Francis also values his 1st round pick above most other assets, it's still only the 3rd draft the Kraken will have had and the prospect pool isn't very deep.
4. The plan is not to compete now, but to target a window from 2-3 years time when Beniers and Wright hit prime years. Karlsson will have long aged out by then.

Reeling in a Giant Cat-fish
Good work making it fit, but I think both Dunn's and DeBrincat's deals will be bigger and that creates an issue.
I also don't think the Kraken can afford to be rolling a $5M player on the 4th line and Schwartz was good in the playoffs. If DeBrincat (or any other high-level forward, my choice would be Konecny) is brought in then I think a current member of the Top9 heads out to make space. The player who makes most business sense is Eberle, but given his leadership role I can't see that happening. To me that leaves Tolvanen as the tradeable piece, the rest either consist of those we want to keep or those with NMC/NTC.
I also think Francis covets his 1st round pick, so he's not trading one away without getting another somewhere. In fact I think it more likely he uses some of those 2nds to move up the draft.

Interesting, someone outside of Kraken fandom has spotted Goyette! He projects to be decent. Hope we hold him rather than trade him tho. 🤞
We don't have the cap space to absorb Grzelcyk and Ullmark, and can't see us giving up on Grubauer just yet so we're not going to carry a tandem costing $11M+!
I'm not against taking your surplus D, but to dump Grzelcyk I'd expect you to be sending us a pick though, not receiving one.

All this movement to get Faulk in for Schultz is bewildering, it's not an upgrade in the short term and the bigger, longer contract would be an issue beyond that. I think Wright is still a year away for Seattle to be able to let Wenny go.

I'm on board with this! Getting Hanifin in and seeking to move Oleksiak out in next season or two makes total sense and aligns the age of the core a bit more. With Toffoli now looking likely to move maybe Sprong offers a more cost effective option to slot into the middle 6 and move Mangiapane up to top line duties.
Ultimately I don't think Calgary trade a prime piece like Hanifin in division, which is too bad.

I appreciate what you've managed to do here in getting Karlsson in the roster without breaking up the team, and still getting the major RFAs under contract too.
However, that 4x$9M is going to cause some issues next Summer when Beniers and Tolvanen need new deals and Ebs and Wenny expire. I think it's still a bit rich and a huge risk if he reverts to the seasons he was having of late before the 100pt campaign. Francis has been big on having cap space being one of the advantages of being an expansion team in this period and I don't see him throwing it away now to handcuff himself the next couple of seasons.
And money issues aside there's a whiff of locker room trouble about Karlsson and bringing such a big ego and paycheck into a very tight squad could upset some of what made the magic in Seattle this last season.
All things considered I'd pass on Karlsson.

Kraken Year3
Thanks for the feedback <a href="/users/KrakenTheCode" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@KrakenTheCode</a> and <a href="/users/GMBL" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@GMBL</a>!
I appreciate it's an unlikely deal and maybe something more significant moves the other way from the Kraken roster, but I thought it an interesting addition to ponder if we were in the mix at all.
This year's playoff run was ahead of schedule and I believe Francis will stay the course to build around a long-term future rather than try to augment the current veterans in order to take a tilt with this roster. As such I don't think we trade for Toews as he wouldn't fit the age profile we'd be in the market for, despite being an upgrade on almost all of our current D.
And there's no way Francis hamstrings himself with the Karlsson contract given how he talks about valuing cap space and flexibility, to say nothing of the imbalance that would create in the squad, and the reported disquiet that EK65 supposedly brings to a locker room.
There's movement happening in the forward corps next offseason with Beniers and Tolvanen needing new deals and Eberle and Wennberg reaching UFA, but the Top9 is pretty set this year.
Far more likely this Summer is moves on the back end; Dunn, Borgen, Fleury all need new deals, Schultz has just 1 year left on his, and whilst we've acquired some decent forward prospects in the franchise's early years our pipeline for D is very thin and so a move to get younger that provides in both the short and long term is something I can see us doing.

Especially as these weren’t our own picks.
Super stoked, great work by Francis!
And poor Calgary, Gaudreau leaves them, then their own pick helps the destination team out of cap issues and strengthens a rival, ouch!
