For all my fellow DNVR fans out there that like Tatar I would say what is the only thing that matters to the Avs is playoff success, do you know how little Tatar scores in the playoffs? I’d take Drouin on a prove it deal everyday over him.

Helle is an Elite top 5 goalie in the league on a great team friendly contract, no way they take this, would need to include Newhook or Byram, even Avs 1sts arent very valuable with the calibre of the team

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jesterno2</b></div><div>Yeah, makes sense. IIRC, Sam has played very well on the right side in previous years and was perfectly comfortable there. I believe he played on the right side any time he was paired with Toews, Graves, Cole, Byram, etc the past few years. It's actually more important to find him a solid defender to pair him with so he's free to go wheeling about a little bit, and since he's obviously on the smaller side. Appreciate you sharing the insights. I was honestly more scared of facing the Canes in the Finals than any other team from the East, TB included. That's a hell of a group and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Finals next year if you can keep it together.</div></div>
I had the same feeling if the Canes made the finals. It’s also because of how the Canes are built. They are the exact opposite of teams like Edmonton, Toronto, and Florida. They don’t have that true goal scorer yet, but they are built on balance and defense. Yeah, and keeping it together will be tough when FO is trying to lowball players. I just hope the Canes can improve their roster with that 1 extra piece to make it all come together.
I think Girard could do so well on the right side if he was paired with Slavin, but I would rather just resign TDA instead, mainly because of his bite and he has better offensive capabilities than Girard. Plus, Girard seems a bit injury prone, and the Canes already have enough of that as is.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jesterno2</b></div><div>Yeah, it might be overkill. With Paul's recent hot streak (7pts & 5G in his last 5 games) I'd expect there to be some demand from contending teams as we approach the deadline. We'd be off-loading Helms salary here, asking WIN to retain salary, our pick is conditional, AND I included getting a pick back. I didn't want to propose a trade that was just "here take a bag of pucks and give us all the value value". This is the year to go for it so I'm fine having one trade be a bit of overkill since there are other teams (FLA) that could be going hard as well.</div></div>
And teams do tend to overpay at the deadline. I'd imagine you could just feed Arizona another mid round pick to take Helm off your hands, and use another 2nd or 3rd to get Stats back.

JT is a passenger too often; if getting rid of him means the bottom six improves this much, I'm all for it. I will say that Bura would likely be extremely ineffective on the 3rd line.

If he stayed, who loses their roster slot to keep him? NAK?</div></div>
COL has over 3.8M in deadline cap space, they would be able to fit him under the cap in addition to this roster. AGM just shows a simplified version of the teams cap hit - since COL has been under the daily cap for most of the year they can exceed the daily cap near the end of the season as long as the total cap hit on the season does not exceed 81.5M
Yes, Compher would play over NAK

I know, right? This has to be something Bednar fixes, right? They have to know it didn't work and will try something new, right? I never got why they didn't make adjustments when it was clear they needed to.

God I hope someone hits a Tampa player with an OS. I doubt it's Sakic though.
I feel like Kuraly is overvalued by Avs fans on this site. He's not a bad player by any means, but I don't think he's much of an upgrade over what the team already has.
Agree with others on the pk too. I think the personnel is fine. Jost looked pretty decent in that role at the end of the year, so that gives the team options. Calvert, PEB, JTC, TJ, Nuke, Saad, and even Landy in a pinch should be enough up front. Not too sure who gets Zadorov's minutes, but I'm pretty sure they'll be okay.
100% on board with the "P.S." in the description, ha ha! :D

This is a solid team, but I'd swap Jost and Compher -- Jost is terrible at faceoffs and hasn't really earned 3rd line minutes over Compher in my eyes. I'd also adjust the D to something like Toews/Graves - Makar / Girard - Johnson / Toews/Graves - Cole

Here’s my thing about goalies, any NHL caliber goalie can have a good season. If this was a conversation a year ago today we would’ve been saying Khudobin or Kuemper aren’t very good. If there’s an issue with the goaltending that’s something you can address at deadline.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jesterno2</b></div><div>Tierney could be interesting. We could definitely use an upgrade at 3C and push JT to the wing. He sounds like a nice option and that's really one of the few spots left that can be upgraded within reason. Good find. Given Ottawa's pretty quick retooling, they're looking much more competitive this year. Maybe could explore expanding the deal and adding some assets to have Cole go there, and/or Donskoi?
From the sounds of it, Toews might be making in the $4M+ range, but I guess we'll see if they get something done before it goes to Arbitration. Might need to clear more cap depending on what his contract ends up looking like. And I would think he ends up somewhere in the top-4. Maybe Toews-Makar and Graves gets pushed down to the 3rd pairing?
PEB a scratch? Buyout?</div></div>
I just have a weird feeling PEB won’t be on the opening night roster. He’s already 35 and he’s not getting any faster.

You have to go pretty far down the list before saying, "yeah that guy has pretty much no shot at being a NHL caliber player," especially on D. Move Zhuravlyov up above MacDonald and you go six deep on both sides. A couple are maybe borderline, but still.
I don't know how others feel, but I loved the Barron and Foudy picks. Good time to be an Avs fan.

Cirelli
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jesterno2</b></div><div>Only way I could see this working was if you find a way to move both Cole and Donskoi. That probably requires an additional late round pick, at least with Cole. Based on everything floating around, you have to figure that Toews will get somewhere in the high $4M-$5M range, and hopefully for 4-5 years at that. He's a stud and you don't give up 2 second rounders without the intentions of keeping him around for a while. The Graves contract looks a little funny now in highsight, but can't imagine Joe knew that the Toews trade was going to go through when he signed that deal for Graves. But either way, gotta figure that Toews + Cirelli would end up costing about $10M between them. We've got some cap space to work with still, but we're pushing right up to the limits...</div></div>
I think Sakic had every intention of making the Toews trade before Graves signed. He played a blinder by getting Graves locked up before bringing in another LHD.
Graves would probably see the writing on the wall with Toews/Girard/Byram in the fold, and not be so willing to sign a team-friendly deal. By acquiring Toews after signing Graves Sakic ensured that he wouldn't have two arbitration-eligible LHD's competing for the same money and comparing their AAV's one to another.
Compare this situation to how Bergevin handled the Gallagher and Anderson situation and it's night and day. Bergevin should have signed Gallagher before signing Anderson to an outrageous deal, as Gallagher was always going to raise his asking price when he saw what Anderson got. The same thing would have happened had we acquiring and signed Toews to around $4m.... Then Graves would have wanted close to $4m as well.
