Moving on from Marner

Also Matthews knows that he's a 60 goal scorer playing with Marner, playing with Nylander he's a 40 goal scorer.
Matthews will **** block any trades of Marner this summer, until Mitch gets his NMC after the UFA season opens up.

Then I think Leafs have to trade Marner at the draft and try to repair the relationship with Matthews after.

Marner is younger and better than Gaudreau, and CGY wants, press I’ve read indicates, to move on from him. Even if the Leafs work out a decent value extension with this older, worse player, CGY gets the better player. And it is not close. Doesn’t seem to me a scam.

I'd think they'll look for, and could probably get, a prospect whose salary won't be on their NHL roster -- you know, why they drafted all those defensemen in the first place.

I like the framework of Marleau and Zaitsev trades (and don't care about the details) and the projected salaries, but could Colin Miller be got with 2 late picks? I thought he was a decent RHD, not some cast off.

His 5v5 scoring rate is insane.
Matthews, over the last three seasons, is at 1.52 G/60.
Going back to 2007-8, only Crosby exceeds that.

Who was saying Matthews wouldn't be making more than anyone but McDavid? He's the best goal-scoring center of his generation, and to find a comparable at that position you'd probably have to go back to... Sakic? Of course his contract was going to look something like that.
Marner, meanwhile, is great. Really great. Like a Kane or Kucherov or Gaudreau or Draisaitl. Great winger. But not exactly a generational talent at anything in particular.

No. At most one of those sweeteners, and even then -- similarly problematic players on similarly problematic contracts get trade one-for-one all the time.

With a few obvious moves we know they're going to make, the Leafs have plenty of cap space to sign Marner at the 11% of the cap (~$9.1m this year) players like him have historically got on their second contracts. They're not moving him to free up that 11% but to protect the additional couple million his side seems to want. That they cannot afford, not unless they're cutting into the muscle.
That 11% cap space could certainly be reallocated to Trouba or Dumba or whatever -- and they'd still have space left over for a few depth pieces.

Yes, that's why I said "before it gets to that" -- as in, before Marner is in a position to force the Leafs hand by signing an offer sheet, he'll go on the block and offers from the entire league will be fielded.

More likely, before it gets to that Leafs field a range of offers and a get a valuable NHLer contributor, a high-end prospect, and a couple of good picks -- and then use the $6-8m saved (counting salary of the NHLer coming back) toward another useful addition. All in all the Leafs come out ahead, but, point re the Rangers being, the Leafs won't be forced into a corner by them when there are at least a dozen NHL teams that'd make space and move assets to acquire Marner.

He can't ice a contending team with Marner at 12-13% of the cap. You can have a team that's too top-heavy in hockey, you know.

Great point.
That it's even worse return supports my larger point -- if Marner wants $11m and someone will pay it, best that it isn't the Leafs, and they put that money elsewhere and take whatever picks/prospects they can get out of his rights.

MIN Trade Redux

Quoting: GMTD

OK, enough of the Nylander v. Kapanen discussion, am I the only one who thinks this is a terrible trade for the Leafs? TOR trades Brown, Connor and Zaitsev, Nikita to BUF for Sobotka, Vladimír; 2021 3rd round pick (BUF) and 2021 6th round pick (BUF)
I get it, the Leafs move the most hated player since Kessel and drop cap, but the Sabres dump Sobotka, get the defensive defenseman to pair with Dahlin and a PK forward only 2 years removed from 20 goals for only a 3rd and 6th round pick.
This is the only way I can see this trade making sense:
Sobotka is a dump and Zaitsev is a dump.
That leaves 3rd and 6th for Brown.
If the Leaf fans view the trade in this manner, then I guess it is fair. I would appreciate comments regarding this trade. BTW, I think you all know that I am a Sabres fan.

I dunno. It's pretty simple, I think. The idea is that there's more value, to the Leafs, in cap space than in holding onto those two pieces -- they can sign/extend players that better fit their (Dubas's) style. BUF's had a pretty miserable defense and penalty kill, so they'd maybe be interested to acquire the players. But I didn't want to go nuts with picks coming back and figured there'd need to be some cap balancing. Sobotka's a bad contract, and the Leafs can benefit from and easily afford buying out the last year.

Could, but I wouldn't. Kadri's almost certainly not going to be re-signed, and Nylander, unlike Kapanen, is an effective center. He gives more options moving forward, in addition to being a better complement to Matthews.

PPG isn't any way to measure how well he meshes with his 5v5 RW... It includes, say, moving to the top PP unit.
Try scoring rates (per 60) at evens.
2016-17: 1.55 G / 2.17 Pts
2017-18: 1.68 G / 2.91 Pts
2018-19: 1.35 G / 2.76 Pts
Kappy's good and Matthews is good with him -- but he's better with Nylander. And Kapanen's a valuable piece where the Leafs are really deep. In need of a raise, he's the sort of thing you move for a valuable piece you can fit into your cap. imo.
