He made 5.5 last year. 7.25 isn’t a pay cut. Although I imagine he will end up making 7.5+ per season.

Yes, NYR traded him prior to signing Panarin. Their cap situation has since changed. Vesey’s cap hit is also less than both other players, and Buffalo has been interested in acquiring/signing Vesey since he graduated college years ago.

Buying out Smith and trying to find a taker for Namestnikov or Strome, even if we have to basically give them away, would cover the remaining RFA’s. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Buchnevich ends up being traded if there’s no feasible market for Strome/Namestnikov</div></div>
All fair. Even though it might be necessary I don’t want to see Kreider traded for less than he’s worth. I think this trade would make that inevitable. Obviously all tbd. In Gorton we trust.

Gusev
Rangers can’t trade 2020 2nd rounder because it’s conditioned in the Adam Fox deal. VGK also aren’t trading Gusev without shedding salary in the deal.
Also I can’t imagine Vlad or Strome going for 3rd rounders since the whole league knows NYR is cap crunched unless salary is retained. NYR fans should all be thrilled if Vlad is traded with no salary retained for a 6th!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WalterT</b></div><div>I can accept a 2nd for Kreider if the prospect is a good enough one but from Boston (whose pick will be near the end of the round anyway) I would want Studnicka. Otherwise I'd need a first.
And I dont think Florida needs Georgiev after signing Bob for now and drafting Knight for later.</div></div>
The reason Kreider could go for less than he should is because NYR is caught against the cap with their unsigned RFAs. Re: Florida, good teams need solid backups. Knight is years away from sniffing a starting job for the panthers.

NYR-VGK
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Widowmaker</b></div><div>I think any team in the league would trade a first round pick for a 70 point player, especially a first round pick that is 3 years away. If he scores 70, we probably had a great season and it’s a lower pick anyway, well worth it. Kevin Hayes got us a first round pick and a prospect and he’s never even sniffed 70 points.
I also think the first condition is to prevent us from trading him back to the West where Vegas would have to deal with him. Which isn’t likely given our circumstances and intention to be a competitor in the next couple years.</div></div>
The problem here though is that NYR isn’t shedding any potential salary either. I know that VGK are up against the cap, but so is NYR. Adding another RFA in Gusev to the fold means Kreider is done in Manhattan. This is fine, but NYR still needs to deal with Strome, Namestnikov, Buch, DeA, and Lemieux.

In a world in which the Rangers aren’t cap crunched to sign their RFAs I agree with you. But unless the Preds turn into the Flyers (Braun overpayment) or Vancouver (Miller overpayment), I don’t see them (or anyone) needing to pay the Rangers full or fair value for any of their potential cap dumps this offseason.

I agree that CBJ is not in a position to move more picks for rentals, even if Kreider were to resign there. That said, if NYR moves Kreider at the deadline a contender will pay a first rounder and a prospect for him. So I like the return here but it's just the wrong team with CBJ.

Honestly, you’re right. This team isn’t bad if the young kids step up. And even if they are awful, the 2020 draft is ?
If the NHL has taught me anything, it’s that it’s really important to be bad at the right time

No way. Grubauer and orpik for a 2nd round pick got the job done for the caps. What you’re proposing is an over pay for sure.
Also just fwiw Karlsson isn’t signing anywhere for less than 7 or 8 years. Someone will offer him the term and it would be silly for him not to take it with his injury history.

Rebuild complete start of dynasty
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Sagecoll</b></div><div>yeah you're extrapolating incorrectly here. It's the top 2 talent. Hughes and Kakko are very good. As I said there is a significant drop off here. The 2nd best dman in this draft (take your pick of York, Heinola, Broberg, Harley, etc) is as good as the 10th ranked dman this year - inferior to Hughes, Boqvist, Dobson, Smith, Bouchard, Smith, Merkley and Miller.
The 3rd pick (I'd probably say Turcotte) - is inferior to Tkachuk, Kravtsov, Zadina, Kotkaniemi, Wahlstrom and Kupari in their draft year. And the depth isn't any better as you get deeper into the 2nd. Guys like Veleno and Bokk who lasted until the 20's last year would be top 10 locks this year.
The draft you're talking about I believe, is next year.

The draft class being arguably “worse” than last years *doesnt make it a bad draft class*

I think you're probably wrong on this one bud. Corey Pronman, as well as other NHL prospect writers, have been writing for months about how much they like this year's crop of guys. Obviously my opinion is based on second hand information, but at least it's something. I guess time will tell.

This is not a draft worthy of moving up in since pick 13 nets you the same value as pick 20. This trade might make sense next year. But you're still giving up WAY too much. Georgiev has significant value. You're basically trading 3 2nds to move up 7 spots in a ****ty draft.</div></div>
I agree that I don’t want to make that trade but this is far from a bad draft.

You’re probably right, but if I’m the rangers in this scenario and this trade is actually something that Vancouver is exploring, the return above isn’t enough.
Also as badly as I’d love for the rangers to use some draft/prospect capital to move up and also take Caufield ( if he somehow slips past the 10th pick), he’s going to Wisconsin for at least one season before turning pro. He and K’Andre can rip up the NCAA together (with Turcotte who also committed to UW) ?Can you guess where I went to college?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Gotta think the only way Marleau is traded...is if he retires, then has cap can be traded with a sweetener. Leafs need cap space, just don't think they can do a lateral trade for any Dman. They need to shed cap by trading a big cap for futures, and hope their current Dmen can hold up this year or sign a very cheap one year veteran.
Longer term the Leafs might OK on defence with their young prospects but 2019/20 is going to be a problem.</div></div>
Don’t get me wrong I’m well aware. The leafs have major cap problems to solve. I’m just saying none of that matters for this particular trade if Marleau doesn’t waive his NTC. I’d love for the rangers to make a deal like this, it just likely won’t happen with Marleau and the leafs.

I’d argue that in a competent defensive system and a true stay at home LHD to play with every night he’s more than a good 3rd pair dman. He also got paid for point production, half of which comes on the PP. NYR went with DeA and Pionk as their PP guys most of the year, so if they trade Pionk’s rights as they should, one would think shatty would be back on at least the 2nd PP unit. Time will tell.

As I was reminded yesterday, Marleau has a full NTC and likely declines. Also Kapanen makes way more than $2.2 million. He had 20+ goals last year.
