Fixing the cap now
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>I’d rather move Stanley and demelo than Copp tbh. Copp is our best defensive forward and is just starting to come into his own offensively. If his number starts with a 4, the jets should get it done in my opinion.
When all is said and done, as much as I like what demelo brings, he is truly an offensive black hole. As for Stanley, I would be okay not doing the gudas trade. As I said, I just think that trade makes the jets better now in a year where they seem like they are going for it</div></div>
Making Copp's term work is going to be very difficult. Especially with PLD, Scheif, Lowry locked up, he is virtually limited to playing 3rd line wing, and for that cap hit, thats a tough proposition, despite him being very solid. Exactly why he could present the Jets with a "sell-high" option. Trading DeMelo would be alright, but I honestly think if you split up Demelo and Morrissey to pair them each with more active, complimentary pairs, you will unlock a very solid backend without having to make any additional moves. At this point, Copp seems like the one who it will be tough to make the numbers work. If im the Jets, I target a cheap winger with a lower AAV, return a pick, and deal Copp, as much as it makes me uneasy.

Fixing the cap now
The Jets just fixed their defensive depth and now have a very solid D core, why would they dish out their best young Defenseman in Stanley and and Demelo who is very solid. No thanks - if it comes down to it, look to trade Copp - he is looking for a bigger role and would eliminate cap and fetch prospects.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Pretty sure most everyone will say it'll take a better prospect then Vesalainen to get Jones and Niku has no value.</div></div>
Hence the First and Third... if that doesn't make an enticing offer on a player with one year left on his term, they would be severely hard-pressed to find someone willing to give up more. But maybe you're right. In the case it does require a better prospect, depending on how good that player is, the picks start to come off the table

Dubois Lines and Explanations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hwjw</b></div><div>I wonder what the breaking point is to shift that top line. Hopefully Dubois is used effectively.
I also like the idea of Stas playing with Wheeler at some point.</div></div>
I’d have to say we are likely close to that top line being broken apart. They’ve been rather flat all season thus far and Ehlers deserves to play more minutes. And sure, Stas could easily flip-flop with Copp in this lineup iteration, but I kind of like the idea of Dubois coming in and driving this line because it does two things - gives Wheelers a chance to generate new chemistry, which could get him going, and it also allows Copp to play more big line minutes. I get the allure of a Wheeler Stastny combination, but I don’t see it working with what it leaves. I don’t see Copp as a third liner anymore.

maybe they don't need it, but at this point ekblad kind of looks like an overpay. so essentially they'd be swapping for Laine, who in a DOWN year sleeps his way to 30 goals, for the price of a first.

Different take on a Flames Jets trade
as a jets fan, as much as I like vesalainen, i think the jets would jump on this trade. they are definitely in need of a replacement RHD with the loss of trouba, myers, and now possibly byfuglien. They are deep in terms of offensive and defensive prospect depth and will have to trade some pieces to stabalize their core and keep their "contender" window open
my conjecture is, this would be a good start for the jets, and if an opportunity presented itself, a 2C should be the next target

Ehlers Trade

Idk, everyone is high on Myers but he's still unproven at this point so there's no way I'm trading Ehlers and the contract he's on for an unproven dman and a 3rd.
I don't think I'd make either of these trades, better to just keep developing Roslovic at center and keep Ehlers plus Stanley might amount to something yet.</div></div>
what if the ehlers trade was for Sanheim instead of Myers, any difference in your mind?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blade88</b></div><div>Connor and Laine get less than Skinner ???????? Not for me.</div></div>
its a good thing you aren't a GM then. Skinner was a UFA, he needed to be overpaid to keep him there. He definitely doesn't set the market for a player like Connor. Also, factor in that Connor has played almost exclusively with Scheifele and Wheeler. Anyone who plays with two allstars is bound to overperform. Don't get me wrong, I think he is good, but his immediate comparable is far closer to Ehlers money than it is to Skinner money. Laine, on the other hand, will likely sign a short term bridge, because after the year he had, i doubt winnipeg would offer him much more than 8-8.5

Because he wont be a third pair D for the leafs, he'll be their top RHD... Vegas has plenty of avenues to shed cap that don't involve virtually giving away a solid D for useless picks 3rd round or later.

Marner 2x8m
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>nyianderr</b></div><div>Panarin signed a 2 year 6m deal after a 77 point season. That's your comparable/precedent</div></div>
there is a LARGE difference between a 77 point year and leading your team in scoring with 94 points. Why would Marner take this? If leafs dont offer him term and money similar to if not equal to Matthews money, im just telling you, he has no reason to settle for 3 million less than hes worth per year for a vastly shortened term. Players want security, hence the desire for protected long term deals. His comparable in dollars and term has already been set by the Matthews number, who Marner has proven to be potentially more valuable than. I know Toronto fans badly want to see him sign for a single digit number, but it just wont happen with teams prepared to offersheet him for much, much more. Why wouldn't he accept an 11-12 million sheet for 6-8 years if leafs laid a stupid 2 year deal for 8 a year at his feet?

Minor Re-Tool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Talking_Senators</b></div><div>Yes Florida is looking to shed salary lol. Those big name FA cost money. Why do you think they're trying to move Reimer..? Dude, NO ONE is going to take 4.333 mil in salary to upgrade a 7th to a 6th. You can't dump salary for nothing, it does not work like that. Show me one trade where a salary was dumped for a 6th round pick.. Doesn't exist. You're also way too high on Roslovic. Guy is looking like a bust, may be a good 3rd liner but damn, if you think Columbus would trade Anderson for him you're crazy. Gotta give something to get something. Teams don't risk established 27 goal scorers for maybes and low picks. Do a little research.</div></div>
I just happen to know, for a fact, that Anderson for Roslovic was close to being approved straight up at the deadline. Anderson had a brutal playoff, which certainly didn't help his stock, after a career year. I can guarantee you that for more reason than one, columbus would go for this trade. Agree to disagree, but getting center depth with offensive touch and a big skilled center in roslovic who is RFA protected for longer than Anderson would be enticing.

Well let me report something, Marner would sooner sign a long term offersheet anywhere in the league for 11+ million over 6-8 years than sign a 2 year deal with the leafs. Thats a promise. There is no comparable or precedent for this

Honka and Stralman
do they work at making the leafs D somehow worse? yes. Stralman was only +12 on the best regular season team EVER with only 2 goals (essentially stats comparable to Zaitsev last season) and is 32. the last thing the leafs will do is invest in a multiyear deal with a depreciating asset like Stralman, even if they could somehow get him fro 2.5 million, which they couldn't. Honka is just not a good plug in, either. As far as im concerned, they are better off sticking with Zaitsev over those 2.

Everyone seems to be undervaluing Miller. Expect a player and a 2nd to be going back to Vegas. Leafs have already shown their hand, they need RHD. No team will part with a quality top line RHD line Miller without demanding a hefty ransom.

Minor Re-Tool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boomer125</b></div><div>Hayes is a terrible contract, Fletcher well over payed on that and absolutely will not work out. Little is a 3 C nothing more, 40 pts is 4 mill on the high paid end</div></div>
I think 5 million is fair for a 40-50 point center, especially considering he has proven to be incredibly durable (more bang for the buck) not having missed a game in the past two seasons. Similarly, the Jets aren't a free-agent destination, so upgrading the 2C position through signing a big name isn't gonna happen. Instead of dumping him for prospects and picks, it makes more sense to keep him around and create a competition of sorts between Little and Brassard for 2C/Powerplay minutes. Perhaps both would see an uptick in production, especially considering, in this scenario, both would be playing with excellent wingers regardless of their spot in the lineup.
