Kovacevic will be coming off his Sophomore year at this point so pass
We'll move Savard for a Profit and keep Kovacevic to give Xhekaj Balance.
Clearly Matheson has to go as Engstroms ahead of Huston physically and will likely be in the AHL pushing for a NHL job with 3-4 other LD at this point.
There's no scenario in where not selling off Savard and Matheson as out Elder Prospects Mature into NHL Regulars. We can always acquire cheap Vet's if needed.</div></div>
I can see us holding onto one of the hometown guys, especially Matheson who can play top 4/PP2 for a while longer, and probably wouldn’t mind a relegation to softer minutes soon enough.

(COL/MTL) - Newhook for Fairbrother, 2023 1st (FLA), 2023 2nd (MTL)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Not the player I would gone after honestly but if MSL can get him to pop off like Dach last year then we'll be laughing all the way to the bank. If he is what he is then yeah this was a bad trade. I feel the difference between him and Dach trades was we knew Dach just needed to get healthy. What was stopping Newhook exactly? He had ample chances to be a go to guy on a team that could make players look better than they were. I dunno, I think they targeted the wrong guy personally.
Also, unless Newhook was gonna be traded imminently otherwise, I would have only made this trade at the draft once we knew a little more how the draft shaped up first. Unless another trade is going down that makes this make more sense (to me). Which is more than likely but for the time being, slightly disappointed that was cost it took to get him and that he was the guy they wanted to go after.</div></div>
Newhook averaged less than 14 min TOI in Colorado, and behind the big guys (and the fact he is only 22, only played 2 full seasons... I could go on) - it's hard to say by any stretch we have seen what he has to offer. He is most definitely a breakout candidate if given consistent top 6 quality linemates.

Did you not watch the Habs last year at all? They were a train wreck. Those stat totals are amazing for a young player, not to mention most of them are goals.

Waiver claim and rumour from big georges
With all the talk from Matheson recently (and the love from fans) I could see him staying a Hab for a while (maybe for the rest of his career). I don't see this happening unless he specifically requests a trade to a contender which I doubt he does anytime soon.

Habs consider this depending on how much value they can get for flipping Johnson with 50% retained. May be enough to recoup initial cost (and more) for Dvorak. Hughes certainly wouldn't mind two 1st rounders in each of the next 3 drafts... but can't say late firsts are all that exciting which is why he opted for Barron in the Lehkonen trade.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>Tyler Toffoli just signed as a UFA, available to the entire league, for 4x$4.25mm. Similar statistics to Tatar. Stanley cup winner. 1.5 years younger. Bigger. Similar goal scoring. Scarcity value of a RH shot. Great person. And just overall, a super smart and valuable hockey player. Probably the perfect player to play alongside Nick Suzuki.
Tatar can ask. As can Danault. Doesn't mean that's what they're going to ultimately end up getting. Edmundson supposedly asked Carolina for a $6.5mm cap hit.
The world has changed.</div></div>
I hope you're right! To your point about Tatar being older, that might mean he will want more given this could be his last "big" contract. Whereas given Toffoli is younger, he could see a reasonable raise after 4 years if he performs well (next to Suzuki for example)

They don't improve by trading away a reliable, cost-controlled 2-way forward for a 13th forward. As others has said above Weal makes a ton more sense to move, and as much as Byron helps on PK, etc. his contract isn't desirable.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wreckless</b></div><div>Poehling likely won't get more than his qualifying offer, 750k on a 1 year deal.
Looking at Mete's (current) 4th year contract (in the current flat cap environment), Fleury and Juulsen likely won't get more than their's either (also $750k).
My guess is that Danault ends up signing at the end of the season for far less than most of us are talking about right now.
Whether Tatar extends or not at season's end also likely depends on his relative performance compared to our other LWs. I could see Bergevin agreeing to a 3x$4.25mm extension right now (ends same as Toffoli), but not much more than that, if anything.
I think you have a fair estimate for KK, I could see his cap hit either being +/- $1mm from that figure. My guess right now would be in and around $2.75mm, but his performances this season vs. his peers will ultimately be what determines the final $ figure.</div></div>
I don't see Tatar asking for less than $6M given his consistent ~60 point status... even if he might start to decline soon he will want to cash in. I expect Danault to ask for something similar with an extra couple of years of term.

Are you referring to the Trocheck, Pesce package?
Trocheck has been terribly underwhelming the past two years, not to mention an impending UFA (I understand they'd negotiate beforehand) and Pesce is most definitely not the defenseman I'd ask for from Carolina. He had a great 18-19 season (as did all their d-men) but his metrics leave much to be desired relative to the rest of that group.
That's not to say this package is any better, but I understand why Winnipeg would absolutely say no to that deal.

To be honest I don't care what the shot looks like, as long as while you're on the ice you score more goals than the other team :) and Toffoli over his career has done that.

(MTL/CAR) - 2020 5th round pick for Edmundson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WellIDK</b></div><div>Well it isn't weird that his GA/60 minutes is better than Slavin and Pesce. They played more minutes (like +3 min ES and .5 minutes SH) and vs better competition. Edmundson got 3rd pairing minutes at ES with way worse underlaying stats than any other defenseman on the Canes. Sure, he can play valuable minutes at PK. But he's not going to improve their defense overall and because of this trade, Edmundson got the leverage during the negotiations</div></div>
You need to put this in context of who the Habs currently have to field their special units. Clearly they are looking for more size/PK ability, even if that means second unit PK. Chiarot is the only "fit" to this ideal. As much as Habs fans would like to think Romanov can step in and just demolish everyone, that's not happening. Mete isn't going to grow half a foot overnight. Weber isn't getting younger. Petry is focused on offense. Kulak isn't played on the PK (for what it's worth). Need I go on? Sure they probably could have waited for FA to start but I don't blame MB for using one of his later picks to get a head start.

Gives Habs another defenseman for the PK, can't have Weber + Petry wasting too many minutes shorthanded (not to mention Edmundson has better SH numbers than any of the Habs D last season over 50 min TOI, also better GA/60 than Slavin and Pesce believe it or not)
