Quoting: BeterChiarelli

If you'd have told me at the start of the season that I would eventually start defending Russell as a valuable defenceman for the Oilers, I'd have laughed in your face.

But here we are.

As this roster stands, Russell is a hell of a lot more valuable than Petrovic (who will not see a raise on his next NHL contract, and would be lucky to get half of what he makes now). Freeing up the additional $2M in cap space is fine should Edmonton actually need it, but in this scenario, they don't. I'd rather see Russell play on his off side alongside Jones than have Petrovic at the same cap hit as Manning for the next 3 years. Chiarelli lost hard on Petrovic, and would be the only GM to give him that kind of money and term on a new deal.

Also, why is Philadelphia giving up more than a 4th Round Pick for Talbot? Drop Strome and the EDM 7th, and the deal is already particularly close. Cam Talbot is a sub-.900sv% goaltender on a team that is no more defensively sound than the Flyers; he isn't going to fetch much at the deadline unless a team with stable defenders is willing to bank on his 16/17 run AND is desperate for a goaltender. Also, neither PHI or NJD will be interested in giving up picks in 2019 if they're going to be lottery teams. Look for picks in 2020 instead.

To answer the question of "what can be done", it's a matter of making a series of small, good moves to bring in as many late picks and draw the retool over 2 or 3 years. There is no solution to the Edmonton Oilers that sees this organization 'fixed' by TDL next season. This team needs a few home-runs in the later rounds of the next two drafts to start fixing this team. There is no help coming.

Okay, thanks a lot! So you see Petrovic gone and the Russell deal not happening. I just think Talbot is having an off-year in EDM and a fresh start can help. Other than that, gonna be tough to see much change.

You're totally right that Edmonton has great center depth, and you're also right that Edmonton needs a wing capable of scoring 20 goals. Bobby Ryan last his 17 even strength goals five years ago, and hasn't since because he's getting old and slow, just like Lucic.

The Oilers should try to add Andre Burakovsky, having a weak start with Washington, who hit 17 at even strenght 3 years ago, is 23, and scored 41 goals and 87 points in 57 games when he and McDavid were rookies together in Erie. He was consistently a line or two ahead of Chiasson on the Caps' depth chart last year, and Chiasson currently leads Oilers wings in goals.

With Orpik out, I think the Caps should trade Burakovsky for Nurse to help them kill penalties. They probably have to add prospects to balance that out. I think Kammerer and Williams fit best into the Oilers' future plans.

I also really like the idea of the Oilers bringing back Sam Gagner, who scores as many goals as Bobby Ryan lately, but doesn't cost as much. Vancouver would probably give him away for nothing, with some salary retained, because it's cheaper than buying him out next summer. Or if you want to trade him for Kassian to make the cap hit work, then you can add picks.

I agree that Edmonton has depth in goal, but I disagree that Koskinen or Montoya necessarily have the conditioning to take over the workload that Talbot is used to. Koskinen's 49 games played in last year were his only season over 40 at any level. Trading Talbot does create cap space, and Koskinen's winning right now, but it might not be worth it. https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/k/koskimi01.html

Burakovsky got 41g 87p in 57 games with McDavid. Born in Austria to a Swedish former NHLer, he speaks English, German, Swedish, and hockey. He's an ideal fit anywhere in the Oilers' top six. His career high of 17 even strength goals is more than any current Oilers wings besides Lucic and RNH, neither of whom should really be playing wing.

Puljujarvi for Burakovsky gets the Oilers to the finals better than any trade they could make. But the Caps then need to throw in extra picks and prospects to flip Puljujarvi for Svechnikov. Pool Party played great with Aho: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0vBmvS3o34

Svechnikov isn't doing so good as the only Russian in Carolina. Sound familiar, Edmonton fans? You've seen that movie. You've yacked in your popcorn. The problem with trading Pool Party for McDavid's awesome linemate from juniors who has 137 NHL points isn't that you need the Caps to throw in their only Russian defensive prospect, so he can be the next Yakupov, and bust out on a ton of talent. It's that you need to start out trading for Svechnikov, and then send Svech to Washington for Burakovsky and whatever else you need. And no, you don't need more youth and depth on the left side of the blue line.

How about Svechnikov for Andre Burakovsky, Maximilian Kammerer (a German-speaking prospect), and Colby Williams (a tough RHD prospect, who can play the puck a little, too).

How you get Svechnikov for Pool Party is your problem, but Carolina wins that one, big time, in terms of immediate performance on the ice. Svechnikov has four points in ten games. You put Puljujarvi with Aho and Tervainen, and look out. He'd have fifteen, and Aho would have 20 by now. Getting CAR to give up two years of age in a swap of top five picks shouldn't cost more than about a 2nd, if they're getting a guy who helps them win more games this year? Carolina probably demands that Puljujarvi signs a bridge deal, first, because otherwise their cap blows up next summer, when Aho hits RFA. Other than that, why not?
