That makes sense. I just think Petry could push the Stars into a contending position. That might make his age worth it.

He's getting paid less than 3 million dollars and is a proven 1B Starter. Almost ANY team would be willing to acquire him. Sure, his more than 4 million dollar contract could've been considered a cap dump, but that contract is now in the past.

That's fair, although I wouldn't necessarily consider those guys that much better considering their age. Shattenkrik is the only interesting one imo

He could be a good defensive centerman for the Avs. It could take pressure away from other lines to shut down other top lines, especially in the playoffs.

Sure, they could do that, or they could just acquire Allen and not have to do any of those things. I don't think Edmonton is looking to blow up their team to acquire a slightly better goalie.

Who will that be though? Because the best available UFA defensemen right now is Letang. Obviously, acquiring Petry is assuming that Klingberg doesn't re-sign with the Stars. The only defenseman that is affordable and available like Petry that might be better is Barrie.

I agree with you, but I'm not sure if trading the pick is worth it for a team that is rebuilding. I just don't see Dumba in the team's long-term plans. I'd rather keep the pick and save that money to use elsewhere (such as a Caufield extension next summer).

The differences between Koskinen and Allen are:
1. They had similar stats this year, and one of them played on the worst team in the NHL.
2. Allen has proven throughout his career that he is able to play like a starter through the duration of a season. Koskinen is far more inconsistent than Allen.
3. Allen shows up in big moments, whereas I feel as though Koskinen seems to crack under pressure.

I'm not sure where Edmonton is going to find that goalie for this price. In theory, the best option for them would be Husso, but he is going to be expensive. Edmonton is going to be looking to optimize their spending as to be able to retain and acquire players. Allen is cheap and has experience as a starter, a tandem starter, and a backup. Very valuable experience too, having been to two cup finals.

I think this actually does work because Drouin at this price is a very low-risk potential replacement for Fiala. Obviously, Drouin is nowhere near Fiala's level but he might be an affordable player to slot into the top 6.

Ellis got injured early into this past season and only played four games - it's not really a year to compare the two players. Besides, Ellis was less detrimental to Philly from his couch than Petry was to the Habs for most of last season anyway.</div></div>
That's a good point, and he had a horrendous start to the season. This doesn't fully make up for it, but people seem to forget that he was a serious Norris candidate for most of the season, two years ago. Maybe the price isn't right, but he could definitely help Nashville for maybe a slightly worse prospect instead of Evangelista, as well as the pick.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>Dvorak may have played in the top 6 on the worst team in the league, but he’s not a top 6 forward on almost every other team in the NHL.
He’s under contract for 3 more years at $4.45M and has some trade protection in the last 2 years. That contract is going to be tough to move. I would temper your expectations if you’re expecting a 1st round pick in return.
“Only has one down year” is also just not true. He’s a 35 pt forward who has had mediocre analytics the majority of his career.
Also, Erik Johnson has a NMC. He wouldn’t waive for Montreal.</div></div>
Erik Johnson has a NMC that allows him to get traded to 19 teams. I'm not sure if he's allowed to change it every year, but if he can't, then I don't assume Montreal would be on that list. If he is allowed to, I agree with you.
However, for Dvorak, his metrics are bad because he's played on Arizona most of his career. In Montreal, I won't defend him too much because I'm not his biggest fan, but he played injured most of the season and had a good end to the season when he seemed to get healthy. His 200 foot game is undeniabely a valuable asset to most teams, and makes up for a potential lack of point production. He's consistently been a top faceoff man in the league, and is a strong defensive forward.

I don't see them paying more than they got in that trade for an older defenseman who's never been quite as good as Ellis.</div></div>
I'm just not convinced that Carrier-Fabbro would be strong enough to contend. As well, I would say that Nashville completely undervalued Ellis when they sold him, and Petry was better than Ellis last season.

That's absolutely fair, but that's why I think Petry could also play with Ekholm. That would be a very strong top 4. Despite his first half of this season, Petry still has value for any team looking to contend. He had a good end to the season under MSL and seemed rejuvenated. The first half to the season is not indicative of who he is in my opinion.

Evangelista is a good prospect, but he is not a top prospect by any means. Despite his tough year, Petry is still a top dman who fits well beside Josi or Ekholm. It will definitely help Nashville contend, if that's what they're hoping for.
