I think no matter what they do in the playoffs my only focus would be on the D this summer as they will be tight with the cap. Next summer they have the cap to go for it

Waiting for JT money off the books will be the time they sign 1 or 2 real top 4 d-men. Pesce isn't the physical presence the leafs need and Walker isn't overly physical either. Leafs need nasty guys if they are ever going to beat Florida, this defense gets steamrolled.</div></div>
assuming the make it to UFA but I am not set on any one I just think they need to have a long term vision and focus on the D and goaltending

I would agree if this team was on the cusp of winning the cup but this team is not so we would be left with nothing no cup and no future

Question If the Leaf's took the Vegas approach and added Hanifin and Hertel(or a 2c/3C) at the cost of not having a pick in the first 3 rounds in the next 3 drafts would that have been better? and what situation would the Leaf's be in this summer if they did not win the cup?

With the exception of a few teams is that not what most teams did/Do? You have to remember that these trades also show the current team that you believe in them or that you added pieces to improve them. It more than just a paper move. Players play better/worse under different coaches/systems teammates etc there are many other reasons to make these deals

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Edmundson and Dewar dont improve the PK though, the Wild have a significantly worse PK than the Leafs and Edmundson was the 2nd least trusted defender on the Caps for tough situations. These were utterly wasted assets for no gain. Edmundson just flat out stinks (so does Lybushkin) and Dewar is fine as a 4c, but the leafs already had a 4C that brad just signed to a massive extension so now they have two 4c's.
If you throw 4 bucks down the sewer you arnt suddenly poor but you wasted the 4 bucks.</div></div>
Its like buying a lottery ticket. Chances are you are not going to win the cup because of it. If it dose not work out you won't look back and think man I really wish they had that 5th round pick. but if you win a round or 2 because you had some depth or options then it was worth it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Dubas did what every single GM of a good team does at the deadline, try and get better and fill weaknesses. Treliving threw away 6 picks for guys he didnt need that didnt make the team better so if he knew they werent going to compete then why waste picks like that? Why bring in old middling players that were at the bottom parts of bad rosters?
Dubas made some mistakes sure, but Treliving has been a bag of used diapers and the team has only gotten worse and worse the longer he's been here and the more moves he's made</div></div>
He did not move any assets of value and did improve the teams PK by adding Dewar and Edmundson. This team is good enough that if they get hot can win some rounds however not good enough to be considered a top contender for the cup.
Nothing Brad has done would be considered a huge mistake that has set the team back. Not sure how this team is weaker than last year. If you are comparing it to the team that went into the playoffs then yes but Brad did not have the same assets to trade then Dubas did

But i guess good gms dont need excuses like treliving does</div></div>
GMs make their biggest mistakes at the trade deadline and July 1st Sometimes the best moves you make are the ones you don't
Dubas was busy everyyear for the Leaf's and what did that get him? The Leaf's went out and got everyone in the 90's and what they they end up with? This team is not Vegas, Florida, Boston or Colorado so I think it was smart not to get rid of the little assets you have if its not going to bring in a real difference maker

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>Completely unrealistic:
1/ 20 man roster is not going to work
2/ you have Domi 2C which is less than ideal
3/ the bottom 6 is not competitive; Kampf is our 4C and does not produce offense - he can’t play 3C
Don’t sign Pesce or Domi (Roy is long shot imo but ~$5M on FA RHD makes sense) and re/sign Bush or Edmunsen (see who is better fit). Our D corps will not be our strength, they just need to be average. We have superstar talent up front, but would be ideal to sign a FA to play 2C and slot JT in 3C; maybe Cowan or Minten make the team which would be great too.</div></div>
1 as I started this is a base they wont be 20 man
2. JT can slide into 2c/3c or Domi down to 3c
3. the bottom 6 will evolve as the Kids find their roles etc
I think its very important for the Leaf's to focus on bringing in legit top 4 D and not bottom pairing D and hoping for the best

This was a base and I don't think its unrealistic to get 2 top 4 D via UFA this summer does not have to be these 2. That needs to be the Leaf's priority this summer

Because Dubas built this team on the fantasy that you can win with skill alone He left the cupboard bare
And now he's in Pitts and in a tough spot as they should rebuilt but can't because they have Sid so he will keep going forward like getting Karlsson etc

I think the Leafs had a good shot to come out of the East if they made a couple of acquisitions on defense.</div></div>
I still believe they have a chance to come out. However I don't think adding Savard or another D would change that much even thought that is what they need
For me I don't think they have the right mix in the bottom 6 and I'm not 100% on the goaltending
As far as 2025 I think they will resign both but JT going form $11M to $4 will help and the expected increase in cap again means they are not looking for scraps and bargains

That's my point So why trade away assets this year if its not going to make a difference anyway? This year they did not make the same mistakes that Dubas has and saved their assets Looks like they might have a change in vision

I am glad they were not short sighted. The Leaf's would be in the same potion this summer with less assets if they did.
You are looking for the illusion of a better team. Brad understands that this team is not a real contender as built and wont be next year either. This teams real window IF played right will start in 2025.

Cap is going to be $87.5M next year so you have more money to spend.
But the Leaf's need to target 2 top 4 D UFAs as their priority this summer. Roy, Skjei, Hanifin, Pesce etc to long term deals

They way I look at this team is they have no cap space next year and really opens up after that. So I am glad they did not waste assets this year.
if they can add 2 top 4 D (1 top 2) via UFAs this summer and play the kids to see what you have next year then they set them selves up for their best cup window from 2025-2028 maybe more
if they stayed short sighted we would continue the be a top 10 regular season team with no real chance at a cup
