That's no form the Leaf's. 3rd pairing D and 3rd liner plus small goaltender does not come close in value for MM.
I like Saros but goalies do not return much in trades

This deal does not fit any need for the Leaf's Goaltender? Defenseman? A level prospect? Even if it did the value is not there

That deal does not even come close to Marner.
You gave up a 1st and 3rd for Ullmark but somehow get Marner for Saros?

Taxes and endorsements are part of the perks for some city's. Really they just need to add a luxury tax and that tax gets split by teams who don't use it.
Let the NYR, LA, Toronto etc spend as much as they want to. Anything over the cap is taxed at 100%.

I know they are but the wrong one is being chased out of town on this board. The one they need to get rid of they wont because he's a goal scoring machine in the regular season

I agree but with all the NMCs the Leafs have the players have the control
They need to look towards 2025 so the focus would be defensemen since no goaltenders are available via UFAs Look for a Goaltender via trade if the right one is available.
Hopefully Burube can right the ship if not you let Marner walk resign JT to a team friendly deal and you have a ton of cap space in 2025.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mccallum</b></div><div>Awful.</div></div>
They need to buy time as they will not move anyone with all the NMC in place and not having a lot of cap space. This sets them up for 2025 when they get some cap relief

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lowblocksniper</b></div><div>Fair enough breakdown but, given the teams that I would think are actually in the mix of getting Marner I think this isn't too bad
Arguably the best goalie in the game right now (he's my pick)
Top 6 winger with about 0.5ppg in year 1 (should be optimistic he can get that up)
Lauzon and Sissons are 3rd pair\3rd line guys
Instead of Jarnkrok and Liljegren swap them for Kampf and Reaves would make more sense for the Leafs and probably upgrade the picks but, I think the foundation for a trade is there</div></div>
I really like Saros but I think he's to small come playoff time. I am not against getting him as he's a huge upgrade on what they have but not for MM. IF they move MM they need to get a top pair D. If they were going to a prospect package they need to have someone with a top3 forward or top 2 D projection.
There are many teams that would be in on MM if he becomes available. If he wants to get paid he will need to go to a team that allows him to show what he can do not necessarily a contender

100% but if they can't move Marner or Tavares then they need to add pieces like DeBrusk and Roy and make sure anything else is movable in 2025 when they have the cap flexibility

Kempe has another year and is almost half the cap hit of Mitch, could put that difference towards signing a dman like Roy.</div></div>
But what the Leaf's can add with the extra cap hit does not play into the value of the trade The trade alone does not benefit the Leaf's in any way.
They are mot moving MM just to move him

If you beak down what the Leaf's get its not a fair deal.
Goaltenders do not return much in a trade at best Saros is worth a 1st + 3rd He's a small goaltender
EVANGELISTA Small forward maybe 2nd/3rd liner celling
LAUZON 3rd liner
SISSONS 3rd liner (I like him but still not much value)
and 2 meh picks
So it might look like a lot but it doe snot really return much for MM alone

add one of Wood, Molendyk, or Tomasino and turn the 2nd and 3rd into a 1st then a conversation can be had

But they can move JT as well IF they move Marner its not for the cap space They need to balance the team but I think they should focus on the Goaltending, D and bottom 6. All can be done without moving Mitch. They just need to get past this year and their cap situation will be fine
You only move Mitch if he really wants $$$$$$$$$ You sit down with him offer him what you can AVV wise and if he says no you ask him to waive. No home town discount then you move him.

Marner will probably be back next year. Its hard to make a deal like that and get the return the Leaf's need.

McDavid
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FoxYou727</b></div><div>The situations are vastly different. When JT went to Toronto in 2018 they had 3 elite players U23 in Marner, Nylander and Matthews while the islanders only had Barzal. They were up and coming and were already a playoff team. Ever since signing, they only have won 1 playoff series. Edmonton accutally has had success</div></div>
After 11 years in Edmonton and if they don't have any CUPs with 2 of the best players in the world did they really have any team success?
The Leaf's will still likely have 3 elite players plus #97 in 2026. and take into account the cap he will demand there will really only be a handful of teams that could afford to add him and IF they had the cap space TML would be at the top of his list. In Toronto he could afford to take less as the value of his endorsements will go up.
Also take into account that McDavid would also attract other UFAs to TO.
