Agree with your team next year basically, not sure bunting gets $4.5M per but numbers aren’t that important; agree he should be 100% re signed.
Would like to see one more vet signing in addition to ZAR at 4W. Don’t see Anderson ever making the Leafs & 3C is straight up battle between Holmberg & Steeves.</div></div>
Ya Capfriendly had Kase as an RFA all last year. Which was clearly wrong. Samsonov is in the exact same position as Kase was by not being qualified by their team and then signing as a ufa.
Anderson is still 23 and he is lighting it up for the Marlies. I hope he is given a chance. Same with Steeves. But I did contemplate adding one 4th line vet, like Lucic or Perry or Hatthaway. One of those guys would be nice, at the right price.

Murray and Samsonov would be great also, but Kallgren is quite steady back there. Decent back up. Plus the Leafs have Woll and Petruzzelli. When all are healthy, they have a log jam. I wouldn't be opposed to Murray + Samsonov, but I have a feeling Samsonov is pricing himself out and would want a starter job.

I never said leafs shouldn’t add at tdl, just not Monaghan and definitely not for a 1st. He was just dumped with a 1st after years of playing poorly; he’s started ok but it’s only 20 games. And he’s on a huge ticket and he’s a rental, pending FA. NO chance, imo, he fetches a 1st at tdl but if he does, I hope it’s not the leafs</div></div>
:tearsofjoy
I see your point andd you're right about the LEafs needing to add.
As for Monahan, I honestly 'believe' (removing my Habs-fan bias) that he could fetch a 1st if he keeps playing like the last 3 weeks. We'll see.
With half salary return, and by taking on a bad contract, I truly believe that.
For example, they got a 1st rounder ONLY so a team could get some cap space.
So I could see his value - come TDL, that's important to mention - could very well reach a 1st.
The fact that he was given with a 1st doesn't come into play at TDL negos though, you know that.
But I see your point 100%, I really do.
The thing is, I did warch the last 5 games and I was really impressed by his strong play.
The whole thing relies on... can he keep it up lol :tearsofjoy

I don’t see why you are trying to make Ottawa competitive this season. Keep the rank going get another top prospect and look to improve over the off-season. Formenton is gone, Norris is done for the season there would be little use wasting assets to fall short.
I highly doubt they could crack the PO’s unless from a WC 2 spot with 5 teams coming from the Atlantic because currently right now
Boston looks like a top 3 cup favourite
Tampa and Toronto are starting to heat up
Florida has been mid but I feel they make a move that betters there odds at the TDL and their overall roster is stronger then ottawas.
Wait a year hopefully get fantilli or bedard and then your forward core is set and you can heavily focus on an RHD and a true starting goalie.
If anything Ottawa should be potentially selling on guys like Zub, Debrincat to gain better futures and prospects

Leafs Radical Transformation if another 1st round exit
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kster34</b></div><div>The whole dmen and centres vs wingers is over played. While it is true, wingers can be superstars too - Ovechkin was best player on his team, Patty Kane, Kucherov. Marner is exceptional and elite - the list of players better than him in this league is short . Aho & Slavin aren’t at that level, imo.</div></div>
I agree sort of. Just going to reformat what you said. The whole centre vs winger vs dman value is real. But player caliber changes that. If you’re comparing Aho, Svechnikov, and Slavin who are all elite players this is a reality. Aho holds the most value as a true #1 centre. Then Slavin as a top pairing D man. Then Svechnikov. Although Svechnikov is amazing, the positional requirements theoretically of the winger out of these 3 are easiest to replace.
But when we get into superstar players this isn’t as easy to decide. Like you said, Ovi is a winger. But his value even today is insane.
I think we are seeing the truest form of this in Colorado these days. MacKinnon is a true superstar through and through. One of the best centres in the league. But my god. What is Makar? That kid is so fun to watch. Logic would dictate that MacKinnon is more valuable. But Jesus I don’t know anymore.

Cap hell is when a team is bad and ladden with bad contracts.
The leafs are not in cap hell.
Moreover, there is no reason why nylander has to be a cap casualty.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kster34</b></div><div>Priorities next year are:
1/ RHD FA to play with Reilly (Mayfield or Zub come to mind)
2/ LW FA to play with Matthews or JT; think it’s too much to ask Knies to step into top 6 right away. Not sure Kuzmenko is the answer but plenty of time left to assess
3/ resign Samsonov to reasonable deal
4/ incorporate new, cheap youngsters like Knies, Robertson, Timmons, Holmberg and Steeves
We may resolve #1 or #2 at this year’s TDL depending on what they do.
Cap is supposed to climb by $4M or more next year, so shouldn’t be a problem to fit it all in and leave space for Athens and Willy ( & Sandin / Liligren) year after.</div></div>
Brodie is the perfect guy to play with Rielly. That pair has always been good. They split them up earlier this year because they didn't trust guys like Sandin to step up. Hopefully when healthy they can trust those guys more.
As for Samsonov, he has been great this year for sure but as has Murray and Kallgren has been decent. So depends how much Sammy wants. He may want to be a starter somewhere. We will see how things play out!
But Zub and Mayfield would both be solid options. I don't disagree on that. Get one of those guys and not sign Schenn. I can be on board with that.

Way too much for Fabro. Rather have Holl this year, and then next year have cap and picks.
Kinda the same situation with Laughton. Is he really an improvement now over Kerfoot as Laughton is injured.
But it does present cap problem next season if Muzzin returns

This is what every Canucks fan says but please show me anything that suggests Myers should be anything more than a bottom pair defender who plays on the 2nd pp? He's big, but doesn't hit, has a long reach but a bad stick, he's supposed to be a good defender but his team gets shelled when he's on the ice. His advance stats suggest he's more of an offensive defenceman but doesn't score or add any offence. He's a bad player not worth his contract, even at 50% he's overpaid. If he made 1.5 million he may have some value but not much. At 3 he's overpaid, at 6 it's one of the worst contracts in the league.

Defense looked pretty good last night against a team that had won 13 straight. No point in overpaying for Murphy with key picks and prospects. I get we can't paly Gio 25 minutes a night and we do need to upgrade, but IMO this is too steep a price to pay
I agree with <a href="/users/reelkena" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@reelkena</a> on this one......to me it's an overpay. I'd take him, but for a lower offer.
