2022-23 Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>larter232</b></div><div>honestly would rather just keep holl and buy out mrazek instead of trading away picks for essentially nothing in both cases
not sign dominik
keep mikko down
and try and get pierre for less than that the guys had 1 good half season this year hes not worth that much
also kase isnt gonna get more money this year than last year he was hurt for 30+ games again
lotta minor things but some things to remember
holl doesnt have negitive value
and unless it doesnt cost anything more than a 5th round pick you buy out mrazek instead of trading him away,
1 million in cap space is all you save by trading him and 1 million in cap space is not worth a 2nd round pick</div></div>
kinda missed this the first time through
but lord what is that boosh contract
4 years and more money for a guy who just isnt as good as holl like i get he hits but you can find other guys who hit
boosh cant play on the pk
and hes awful at making the first pass so he ends up getting hemmed in his own zone more often than not
2.5 million is probably at least 1 million too much
pierre wont get that many years and if he does it brings up the aav instead of lowering it so its worse for the team

Trading Some Prospects
with all due respect to everyone trading mrazek away
1mil in cap space is not worth a 2nd and a 3rd round pick
just buy him out and keep the picks build around 1 an 81.5 million cap

very very true that second year is kinda a killer
and can absolutely see drouin getting more later this year

What do leafs fans think
i know leafs fans clown him but holl actually does have positive value and if there is a cost to get rid of him they would just keep him
that middle trade has me interested to a degree but i dont enjoy the idea of gambling on miller coming here after giving up that much
i know what william nylander does every night
i have no idea what JT Miller will do for the leafs every night
hes played great for the canucks but ive watched many players play great for other teams and then come to the leafs and just suck ass
or get hurt and trading willy and a first for 1 year of jt miller is a bit... i dont even know how to word it right.
if the first round pick could be moved to next year and be top 10 protected i would be much more okay with it
and there could be something done about the habs one
i dont hate the idea of trading him there nor do i hate the cost to do so
but i would like at least some kind of return because despite how rough a season he had
mrazek is still an nhl caliber goalie that some teams will want like arizona or even the habs if they are looking to draft 1st overall again

this team probably wins a series
kucherov is the best player on either team on the top line
matthews is the best player on either team on the second line
barkov is the best player on either team on the 3rd line
kaprisov and landeskog are too close for me
makar is the best dman on the top pairing
mcavoy is the best dman on the second pairing
though to win 1 game the other team could pull some magic beans

holl
dermott
and a 2nd round pick
7 million in cap
for
crouse
clutterbuck
mayfield
6.5ish million in cap
kerfoot is the best player in the trade by a good margin
holl and dermott are both better than clutterbuck
crouse is better than both of them
and mayfield is probably equal to both
kerfoot
crouse
holl dermott mayfield
clutterbuck
the team is just worse and you spent a second round pick to do it
you are not even saving any meaningful amount of cap here

the only thing i might prefer about t this would be
Sandin-Liljegren
Derms-Holl
But i love the idea of loading that 3rd line up with all that as long as the lines play a similar amount of minutes i think it could be really good.

Salary cap exists.
And the Leafs have a goalie putting up > .930 SV% during his time as a Leaf. Ridiculous to move valuable pieces to "upgrade" at G.</div></div>
yep all good points the only part i dont super agree with is (Ridiculous to move valuable pieces to "upgrade" at G.)
Price is different he just is its not the same as doing this for like matt murray or robin lehner or jonathan quick or thatcher demko, the only reason its a consideration is because of who it is
If hes healthy and i mean as close to 100% as he can get yeah i would trade this package for him(mostly cause in reality its knies+1st for price 40% retained) if they retained more i would trade maybe 1 additional piece, hell if you could get a third team involved somehow to retain another million or 2 it would be insane(super unlikely though)
Price at 5.25 is gross at even less its even more gross
But i can understand why someone might not want to do that, hes older and the contract is quite long so its completely understandable

I mean i guess when all the leafs best players are 30 years old or younger the team will be the worst its been in 11 years
kase kampf ilya simmonds spezza bunting hell even jumbo are completely outweighed by nick ritchies existence
and John tavares is bad i suppose really horrible signing a PPG player and the captain of your team.
I genuinely think people believe matthews marner and willy are already near the end of their careers because they came into the league so young.

just for clarity here you are essentially trading nylander to keep bunting. No contract signing you have with the sole exception of Jack Campbell is worth william nylander.

do you mean by chance that you think the leafs need to add a 1st round pick on top of giving up Mitch marner and Alex kerfoot,
for a bad left winger, and a solid but unneeded dman and a 2nd round pick
or arizona adds an additional 1st round pick to the trade where they get 2 bonified top 6 players including 1 who finished 4th in league scoring and both are defensively above average?

All teams TDL 16
I dont actually hate the lehkonen one, and certainly wouldnt mind it 1 bit with a bit more retention, the full 1.2 off at the deadline would mean he only costs like 300k or something against the cap, thats a really solid piece of depth for very little cost, has really similar metrics as Engvall, a second may be a slight bit much, but seeing how its next years second thats okay
Villeneuve is a really solid prospect but i wouldnt rate him any higher than maybe a B- at best i imagine he will be a bottom 6 dman, with maybe slight abilities that could help a powerplay, granted hes kinda young i imagine the leafs would wanna see him actually play at a higher level so he may be unavailable right now
Its a hard trade to quantify, because the leafs do want players for cheap right now, but they need to think, will their second round pick next year and Villeneuve carry more weight in the org going forward,
Now toffoli would be far more interesting, in theory he could get a chance to play in a role where all he needs to do is score goals in a depth role,
He would carry more impact on the leafs than lehk, if he could be retained which would be a much harder sell for the habs, but toffoli retained would be something i imagine the leafs wouldnt hate at all.

TDL Moves and Team Reset
i really dont mean any offense here, but i dont know if the leafs would take calvin de Haan for free if you were giving him away.
I certainly cannot find anything that would indicate that he with no retention is worth a 1st in any capacity.

Deadline
i dont hate the idea of acquiring letang,
but i cant see the leafs needing laferty or wanting to get rid of a first and ritchie and holl.
I dont mind trading sda and holl and a 2nd
but i think a more fair trade for both sides would involve more prospects and the leafs trading out cap somewhere else and maybe the penns being used to do so with them retaining for the leafs
lets say the leafs found another team to retain another half, idk where for like a 3rd
i think the leafs would then be comfortable trading
Engvall Steeves 2022 2nd 2023 3rd
frankly thats probably not enough
but i wouldnt be comfortable with trading more for an old Offensive defenseman, despite the fact he plays on the right side.
