I think canucks say no to this, because if petey goes there are no cap problems. If petey gets offer-sheeted 10x7, just take the 4 first rounders over the trade you have above

seattle will pick one of macewen or lind. they then get a serviceable albeit overpaid defenseman for a b-tier prospect/nhl 4th liner (the other of macewan or lind) and a 2nd.

Saving real money should be considered, but I think in this cap environment the AAV is the number GM’s are most concerned about. If you guys did this on the draft day then I think a 2021 pick would be in play, but in any case you should add more to the trade.</div></div>
"I think the 6 million cap hit was the deciding factor in that trade"
this is fair - especially when trading to CHI which could in principle come close to the cap. non-cap teams, maybe not

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>desertdog111</b></div><div>Ekman-Larson is scoring at a 50 point pace this year and Kessel leads the team in goals on a 30 goal pace. Vancouver needs to add by a lot. Plus OEL said he is not going to waive his NMC</div></div>
He is also the 12th worst defenceman in the league by 5v5 xGF% for players with more than 120 mins played.
xGF%:
OEL: 41%, 12th worst
Myers: 43.5%, 27th worst
...out of 235 qualifying defencemen.
Anyway neither of these players are good. The value to vancouver in the trade is dumping roussel and eriksson. The value for the coyotes is getting out of the massive financial commitment of OEL's contract, especially the next few years where he's making 10.5 million real cash per season

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EsoYeezus69</b></div><div>Myers contract is way worst than OEL’s, sure OEL is longer and a little heftier but he’s a little bit younger and way better, OEL contract finishes when he’s 36 and Myers when he’s 35. Kessel, Roussel and Loui have the same amount of term. Ari gets 3 million more for basically AHL’ers, while Kessel is Ari leading point scorer.</div></div>
Fair enough, but the premise of this trade is that OEL's contract and Myers' contract are similarly bad (OEL because he's way overpaid, Myers because he's bad and overpaid), but the value to Arizona is in the $21 million in savings.
FWIW Myers turns 34 in the last year of his deal, not 35.

if virtanen truly has negative value (which IMO is not the case but people are all over on this one) then it would save aqualini 2/3rds of the remaining cash to buy out this deal, which I imagine he would not have a problem with. similar in a sense for holtby: if a replacement can be had for less than the difference between his 2021-2022 salary (5.7 million) and the buyout cost (3.8 million) I don't think there would be a problem.

"as seen in the Carolina/Toronto trade"
That was 6 million cap hit, 6 million real salary. Eriksson will have 3 million real salary after signing bonuses are paid. Presumably 2021 pick is not included so that the signing bonuses have been paid (i.e. after the draft this year)

agreed, would need sweetener. Why Johnson waives for Vancouver: tampa asks nicely... not sure! He is one of the prime candidates for tampa to shed salary but theyd obviously have to get him to agree. Beagle is currently on LTIR and it has been reported (by dhaliwal) that he is likely to be out for a chunk of next season.

I think this is one of the few ways buffalo will get out from skinners contract - they won't find a team to eat the whole thing. It lines up perfectly with their timeline! They eat a lot of bad cap in year 1, and then benefit over the long term. Here's the year-by-year breaddown of the impact of this trade on their cap: (+ means more cap hit relative to the alternative, - means more cap space):
9.5, -0.3, 3.5, -0.7, -2.2, -3.2, -1.2, -1.2, -1.2, -1.2, -1.2, -1.2

Vancouver says no. The vancouver side of the van-buf trade is:
Demko, Höglander, Horvat, MacEwen, Motte all of whom are either restricted free agents (Demko, Hoglander, MacEwan) or signed to at least two more years at very team-friendly cap hits (Horvat, Motte).
The buffalo side is:
Eichel, Thompson, Mittelstadt
IMO
Motte + MacEwen > Thompson + Mittelstadt
So you basically want
Demko, Höglander, Horvat and a 1st for Eichel. This might not be a massive overpay for Eichel but this is Vancouver losing the strong players from the middle of its roster to get another top end talent in Eichel

Virtanen is an overpaid 4th line winger, and that's the payment for taking an overpaid defenceman and retaining on a defenceman that's playing well?!?!?!</div></div>
i realize also that i didnt delete the comment about 1 mill retained - you can see in the trade that there is no retention

i think its a bit disingenuous to call virtanen either overpaid or 4th line - obviously struggling to start the season (like much of the canucks roster) but he's good for 15-20 goals per season, even in limited minutes. definitely not overpaid at 2.55 per year and cost-controlled
