It's interesting, but if the Canucks sign Hughes to, say, $5 million per for two seasons, they would technically have the money to match this ONLY if Ferland is placed on LTIR. They'll have to move money once he comes back (which is easier said then done).

But that's your opinion, right? The other person is entitled to their opinion, too. We don't put "lol" to prove a point. There are plenty of ideas from people on this site that I disagree with. However, I try my hardest not to add to that discourse by egging someone on with an "lol" or "that's the worst thing I've ever heard," because that simply doesn't add to your argument or casts you in a positive light.

Eichel

Quoting: OnFoenem34

hes a top5 centre in the league lmfao

I get it. He is a top 5 center when fully healthy. Now, gauging from what's happened over the past several months, I would assume that all of the other general managers would agree that they wouldn't want to trade that many assets for a player making $10 million per when they have absolutely no idea if he will A.) be able to perform at that top 5 center in the league, and B.) be able to even play again. That's a mighty big risk that, as of now, nobody has been willing to take. The Sabres also have to take back significant money in return because they'll be well below the cap floor without doing so.
I know it's hard to admit. I know. But every pundit agrees with this. The Sabres are in a tough spot. I wish they weren't, but they are. Whether you agree with it or not does not change that reality. I hope he plays again, but you just don't know. It's telling that no GM has done it yet. I was reading an article about this in the Athletic: Asked by a reader if Eichel would be placed on long-term injury reserve, Vogl points out the Sabres aren’t near the upper limit of the salary cap. Eichel would simply go on injured reserve and his $10 million annual average value would still count against their cap payroll.
Vogl projects they’re at $48.1 million (including Cody Hodgson’s buyout) without Eichel and restricted free agent defenseman Rasmus Dahlin in the lineup. That puts them $12.1 million under the cap’s lower limit.
If Eichel isn’t traded and goes on IR, his cap hit puts the Sabres within $2.1 million of the lower limit. A new contract for Dahlin would make them cap-compliant.
All this is to say that If Eichel gets traded the Sabres will have to take on some salary from whichever club they send him to. Even that might not be enough, forcing them into the trade and free-agent markets to address that need.
Finally: at no point did I ever laugh at any comments. I was constructive. Saying "lmfao" is pretty condescending, and both doesn't add to your argument or cast you in a good light. I teach middle and high school students internationally, and they all are mature enough not to act that way.

They're not getting that much for Eichel until they prove that he's healthy enough to play at the level that warrents a $10 million per contract. AND they'll have to take salary back, as without Eichel's contract on the books they'll be under the cap floor. They're in a really tight spot with this one, and, at least in my opinion, they probably should have moved him prior to the draft.

You could have worded this a bit differently. I mean, adding the lol was a bit condescending and could be taken as harsh. Calling something the "worst think I have ever heard." is also a bit harsh. Same with Kaprizov, he woulda been in the Calder debate if he’d come to the NHL 4 years ago, but he had a contract to fulfill. Those two are comparable to each other. DeBrusk is not even close. As for the trade, Backlund’s a centre, he’s fantastic defensively, and still scores 15-20 goals and 45-50 points from the 3rd line with amazing consistency. DeBrusk was on pace for 10 goals and 28 points last year and he’s gonna be “stuck” on the 3rd line again because he’s not better than Hall. His value is at an all time low, and he needs to either prove he deserves to be on the 2nd line or at least show he can be a solid 3rd line contributor if he wants to be more than a throw in to some trade. Not the centrepiece for a good 2-way centre.

Agreed. To me, they're night and day. Team actively look for players like Backlund. Maybe DeBrusk has "potential" that we haven't seen yet, but, at least to me, third-line players of his ilk are pretty easy (and affordable) to find.

This is just an observation, but according to this make-up, all of their right-wingers would be left-handed. That makes it easier to cut-in and shoot or set up for a one-timer, but not as easy to both break-out or make cross ice passes. Just an observation. :)

Were talking about one of the best defensive centers in the league here vs an at best 2nd line winger that has been heavily sheltered offensively and is not very good defensively

I couldn't agree more. Backlund has been a pretty solid two-way center who averages around 40-45 points and around 20 goals per 82 games. Now, his contract - which runs until the end of the 23/24 season at $5.3 per - may one day become an issue. I doubt that the Flames trade him. DeBrusk, who is 24, hasn't been consistent enough offensively or defensively to warrent that risk from the Flames.
Please don't hate (there's FAR too much of that on this site), but in the absence of Krejčí, I would have though the Bruins would have been a bit more desperate for a second line center, and I am surprised about their confidence in Coyle and how he fairs next to Hall. Maybe Krejčí returns midseason, but I would frankly be surprised. Maybe Coyle works out, but with Marchand and Hall already ahead of him, DeBrusk is, at least at the moment, a third line left winger on this team with almost no chance of moving up. It's just reality. I know some see it differently. I'm excited to see the breakout that everyone's been mentioning would happen for the past 3 seasons.

I'm not disagreeing, but to play devil's advocate, referring to someone as a "middle 6" player really only means that the player is not a "top line" scorer (i.e., you'll probably never find McDavid or Mackinnon being referrered to as "middle 6" players). They probably hope that the people listening to/reading the discussion would understand that, in hockey, there are only 12 forwards dressed for a game, not 18. Again, I am not advocating for either: I am merely explainging why people may use that terminology. :)

Maybe? The NHL, to the surprise of many (including myself), has been successful in many parts of the southern United States. I never thought I would live to see a team not only move to Las Vegas, but thrive there. They've also been successful in Anaheim, San Jose, Los Angeles, Dallas, Tampa Bay and Raleigh. And they were initially successful in Phoenix: their financial woes started once they arrived in Glendale. Yes, they missed on Atlanta, but to say that a city like San Antonio (which is currently a one sport city and a top 30 market in the United States and has a ready-made arean) or Houston (a top 5 market with a ready-made arena) isn't grasping the socio-economic realities of moving to one of those two locations. Finally, if the Coyotes move (this has become a rather silly conversation, as it's based on opinions and conjecture), it will come with an opportunity to grow and build the game, which is something the NHL loves. :)

I'd love Quebec City, too, but again, it's doubtful for so many reasons: it's an east coast city, a Canadian city for that matter. This matters because if the Coyotes do end up relocating, the NHL will have to pay attention to both realignment and their brand new US TV deal. I think they stay, but if they do move, I'd hedge my bets that it's Houston, San Antonio, or Portland. :)

It will be close. I think it depends on how the Sharks view Harris: I personally see a future 3-4, left-side defenseman who could probably jump into the NHL at the end of the season for some experience before filling a bottom pairing roll the following season. I assume that the pick - a 1st from 2022 - would probably come with a stiputation that the Sharks would get whichever one the Coyotes do not receive from the Dvorak deal, correct?

I get that. I just know that it's easier for a right-shot player to play on the right side, as it's easier to defend passing lanes and much easier to start a break-out. You are correct: there have been left-shot players who have made the switch to the right-side, which would that player an added one-timer option. When in doubt, I trust Hockey Canada's model of always having right-shot players play on the right, and left-shot players on the left (unless you're on a power play). I thought our one glaring hole was a third pairing, right-shot defenseman for the right side. I guess they could conceivable improve by adding another forward, but I would assume they're going to look at that third pairing slot on that side. I haven't heard rumors about this - just my own conjecture - but I am surprised that both Demers and Vatannan haven't been signed yet. It's possible that they don't want to play in Canada or in Montreal. However, those would be two players that I would be looking into if I were Bergevin. I guess they could look into Eric Gudbranson, but I think that may even be a downgrade from Wideman. Same with Michael Stone.

Sabres accept this Eichel offer
I am not quite sure Eichel will, at least at this moment, net the equivalence of four 1st round picks, though. Let's be fair here: Eichel has not had surgery yet. Either surgery that he receives is a serious surgery. There is a possibility that Eichel gets one of the surgeries, comes back, and plays like the all-star that we all know. But, nobody is acknowledging that it is almost equally possible that he comes back and cannot perform at his $10 million per paycheck. Furthermore, there is a possibility (however small) that he may never play again. To expect a team - without giving said team the chance to talk to the doctors working directly with Eichel - to pay the equivalent of four 1st round picks for a $10 million dollar a year player when you're unsure what the outcome would be? Take a big step back, read that statement, and then ask yourself if you want your team making that trade.
I am not saying that the Eichel from last season wasn't worth his contract. What I am saying is that, as a GM, I would be extremely nervous to trade for a player with that contract if I do not know what he's going to be like post surgery.
Just my thoughts: I think it's highly doubtful that he gets traded prior to the start of the season. A team needs to at least see his medicals. If the Sabres offer Eichel at a 30% discount ($7 million per), maybe there's a GM willing to gamble. But they just need to see the guy skate after surgery.
I feel awful for Sabres fans. I really do. I don't have skin in this game, but it's going to be interesting to see where he eventually lands and how much it cost to get him there. I also sincerely hope that, no matter what, he gets back to playing and that he's okay. :)

I completely agree: and when I read that a lot fans think he's worth more, I question if they are far enough away from the Sabres to truly grasp the situation. The Sabres have not, at least to our knowledge, let teams see Eichel's medical files and talk to the doctors that deal directly with him. When he's 100% healthy, he may be worth that package. The problem is, he's absolutely not 100% healthy right now, with no way of knowing if he will ever get back to where he was: will he play at his all-star level again? Will he even be able to play again, or will this force him to stop playing? For $10 million per, I would not trade for him unless I see him post surgery and had the chance to discuss his condition with his doctors.
This is a mess. I am curious to see, if and when he does get traded, what the cost actually is. Terrible situation for fans of Buffalo. It's not fun.
