<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CheechYou</b></div><div>In that case it's an easy Sharks decline.</div></div>
Sharks take Chiarot and buy him out after this year. the cap hit for a Chiarot buyout is only one year more than an EK retention and is:
- 24-25: $1,083,333
- 25-26: $2,083,333
- 26-27: $1,583,333
- 27-28: $1,583,333
As opposed to to the 3.5-5.75 mil most (fans) want Sharks to retain on EK until 26-27. It also keeps two retention slots open for deadline deals, instead of being limited to 1 for the next 2 years

Im Gonna Try A EK65 Trade
35 year old Petry likely doesn't waive and is basically a cap dump. 31 year old Granlund is basically a cap dump. Poulin is a 22 year old former late first who hasn't done much since. A 2nd that might become a late first in two years time and a 4th. Not really much there to interest the rebuilding Sharks I'd say.

My bad, you're correct. I was counting these two plus Burns, but I doubt they'd still want to use all 3 spots up .

Rumored EK65 trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matthias893</b></div><div>Burns was 37 years old with an 8m contract that expired when he was 40. He was older at the time of that trade that EK65 will be when his current contract finishes 4 years from now. He had a 3 team trade list and didn't want to leave San Jose unless it was to a legit contender. That market was a triple venn diagram of teams that wanted him, teams that could afford him and teams that he would agree to go to. Retaining 33% was literally the only way to move him. Extremely small market and Grier got a goalie prospect they still believe in and a 4C in Lorentz they just flipped for Duclair. Add on to all of that that Grier was not allowed to go into a rebuild right away, but had to at least try to get back into the playoffs last year which meant we had to trade someone right away to free up cap space to add guys like Benning and Sturm who were great pick ups. Circumstances dictate what players are traded for as much if not more than the players actual worth.
The deal to trade down from 11OA netted us three excellent prospects in Bystedt, Havelid and Lund. All you have to do is look at our prospect pool after one year and you can see that Grier has been doing great work to start overhauling it.</div></div>
Good that you're happy with his moves.

I get where you’re coming from, but their defense looks awful on the bottom 2. Jan Rutta was a viable defender for Tampa bay when they won the cup back to back. I wouldn’t want to over pressure any young defense making them play NHL minutes. It’s an easy trade to say yes to when it makes you a even little bit of a better team.

Grier hasn’t been bad, you can see hints of his plan.
Yea we’re getting more than this but not as much as we would hope for.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matthias893</b></div><div>Am I crazy or is it kind of obvious that no one would waive to go to Philadelphia? It makes you wonder why that was ever a linchpin in this trade to being with. Not trying to rag on Philly, but its clear their in a rebuild. Whenever I look at players the Sharks might trade for I pretty much always rule out anyone with a trade clause.</div></div>
Philly is usually considered a desirable organization. I'm sure the fact they are going through a rebuild makes them less desirable. Krug would be wasting the rest of his contract years on a rebuild if he stayed there.

Sharks get depth clear cap by moving down in draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matthias893</b></div><div>What do you believe they would do with the cleared cap space? We're arguably farther away from being competitive than Arizona is. We're not in a position to be overpaying for UFAs and we don't have any RFAs who deserve big raises any time soon. Labanc's contract will go away in a year and Vlasic's will go away in three. San Jose is unlikely to need to buy cap space in the next three years, but if they do, then buying out Vlasic in his last year is probably more realistic.
San Jose's bad contracts are a problem in the context of a short re-tooling. They aren't really as much of a problem in the context of a long rebuild and its even less of a problem if we trade EK65 this summer.</div></div>
Thoughtful response. Thanks for taking the time. I know Armstrong and Grier will make a deal.

It costs at least a 2nd to dump Murray's contract with nothing going back to TOR. Look at historic cap dump costs.
You're not getting SJ's 2nd (that conditionally can turn into a 1st) in return for giving a cap dump. Seriously Toronto fans need to stop this complete delusion. It's not going to happen

Kuznetsov and the Russian persuasion
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matthias893</b></div><div>Nice work, and you're right that ranking systems will say this is a good trade, and trading down is almost always a value gain in those terms, but there are a few realities this year that change the landscape.
First is how top heavy this draft it. At least from what I've read from various sources the top is deep but the second half of the 1st round is closer to a standard draft. 4OA likely has closer value to 1OA or 2OA in a normal year, but 29 is still 29. Likewise the 2024 1st is going to be a standard value pick.
Second, the Sharks are desperate for elite talent. Yes we need quantity, but we need quality more. Our rebuild has to kick off right with top end players this year and next. 13OA will be solid, but its not going to be Smith/Michkov/Carlsson and we badly need multiple players of that caliber.
If Shark's fan's say its not close it isn't because the value isn't there, its because its going to take an insane overpayment to get 4OA from us. The kind of overpayment GM's are probably just not going to pay unless they are desperate.</div></div>
Grier himself said it would take a “significant offer”. This might be a <em>fair</em> offer but it is a longshot from <em>significant</em>

The Sharks currently only have 1 retention slot available and to my knowledge won't get a 2nd until after Timo Meier's current contract expires on July 1st.</div></div>
Damn that's an amazing point, great find.
I suppose one of the deals would have to go down no sooner than July 1st meaning the picks would have to transfer to the 2024 draft of that trade.

If CBJ view Leo and Will the same
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>matthias893</b></div><div>Hertl to CBJ isn't a bad idea for sure, but its a hard trade to gauge value on. Roslovic is going to be a UFA so unless the Sharks are confident he will resign, its hard to say he has much value here. I like Boqvist and Bemstrom, but I don't think they get you Hertl on their own, and so it comes down to whether the difference between 3OA and 4OA makes up the value there.</div></div>
Agreed. I think Ros is mostly to make the money work and he probably has little to no value other than providing a year of insulation in the lineup for young guys.
Value of Boq, Bem and 3OA for Hertl and 4OA is close IMO. It would be subject to each sides own valuations of the players, but I can see how it could work well for both sides.

SJ is not going to trade Karlsson for that little return. Doesn't matter if you think that is the max EDM would pay, they'll just keep him if that is the best offer on the market.
