2023-2024 Lineups
Lindblom on the 1st line and Granlund on the 4th? No Zetterlund? Macdonald and Simek over Knyzhov Burroughs and Thrun?
Typical national network, never watches the Sharks, probably only really watched Granlund play in his 20 games for Pitt, remembers Lindblom's name from when he was in Philly and so you get a roster like this.

adding just 1 dman
Tying up the Sharks last retention slot for 2 years is going to cost more than 2 3rds I think. They'll be saving that to use on an expiring deal this year and then again next year too. Hoffman or Labanc probably won't be moveable at all without it and they have no pressing need to trade Rutta this year.

Yeah its not great. My guess is that it will be some combination of these 6, but not one of them are top pair dmen, and most aren't middle pair either so its a crapshoot. My only hope is that Gawanke shows some of his offensive potential translating to the NHL. He's basically our only offensive D even close to ready.

No from Sharks, big time. #1 we like Sturm a lot and expect big things from him this year leadership wise. Would not be shocked if he got an A. #2 we better be getting something much better than a 3rd rounder for our last retention slot, especially since it's for 2 more years.

I'd be surprised if he didn't have a very small amount of trade value. Like you said his cap hit is below minimum, but also he's like a swiss army knife. He has experience playing D and Forward and 5 or 6 teams are over the cap right now and still don't have full 23 man rosters. Macdonald could be a flexible cheap depth pickup for one of those teams if we can take advantage of their situations. Maybe a 2026 7th or as added value in another deal.

Metro Division Outlook Rangers
I like Goodrow, but $15m real money and a 4 year commitment to buy a late 1st round pick? Maybe a bit less in the end, 11-13m with a buyout down the line (which other players usually aren't happy to see). What have other teams paid in actual cash for a 1st round pick? Also Grier just showed how important cap flexibility is for him, and for 4 years this would eat into a good chunk of the salary cap he just freed up with the Karlsson trade.
Maybe if we were to move Sturm or Kunin in a separate deal to free up a roster spot and some cash, otherwise he's just kind of redundant on the vet side and a few years down the line he's just taking up space from guys like Bordeleau/Bystedt/Robbins trying to break into the league.
Not saying its impossible, but I don't think its a slam dunk either.

Building Seattle model
I'm really hoping Gawanke shows some NHL promise this year and secures a regular spot. He's been a solid offensive defensemen in the AHL, and it seems like he was maybe just blocked by DeMelo, Pionk and Schmidt? I'm sure there's more of a reason why he couldn't crack the WPG NHL roster, but I also don't think we trade a guy like Knaizev if there isn't something worthwhile coming back. Sturm played with him for Germany and liked him. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets a chance at 3RD this year and possibly running the 2nd powerplay unit.

You should watch the Sharks more. We suck, but Randy Hahn is the best and Sharkie is dope. Also Benning played significantly better for us and is a steal at his current cap hit. IF we ever trade him it should only be for a return that has people saying "They gave up THAT for Matt Benning??"

2023-2024
I think that's a fair all vets lineup, but it makes it tough to get any AHL guys up if they deserve it. I'd probably swap Zetterlund and Kunin and I think Gawanke makes the lineup as our only true (probably) NHL ready offensive defensemen.
To me this lineup is a bit too closed off from the AHL though, no room for guys to move up. Barabanov and Ferraro are probably the two most trade-able assets on the team as of right now so I can see them being moved out before the season starts. It makes some room for call ups and could net us some draft picks. Meanwhile all the pending UFA vets left on the roster can still build up their value for the trade deadline.

Lines from a non sharks fan
Pretty close I think. I'd put Sturm over Kunin at 3C, and Peterson over Lindblom based on their play last year. Labanc being that high in the lineup will give him ample opportunity to earn his cap hit and boost his trade value. Zadina and Zetterlund will hopefully both make cases over the year for moving up though.
Part of me thinks Barabanov, and Simek will be gone before camp, Thrun will probably earn a shot on LD and I think Gavanke makes a strong case for himself for #3RD and they will probably want him to get some PP time (especially if EK65 gets traded). Ferraro and Benning will probably see some extended time together so one of Vlassic/Knyzhov/Burroughs will play with Karlsson, with my money on Knyzhov. Vlasic/Burroughs/Thurn/Gavanke will fill out the bottom pair with the younger guys getting priority if they play well enough to earn the spot.

Or at all necessary.
Hertl won't get moved unless its for a huge overpay, otherwise we just keep our 1C who will still be good when guys like Smith/Bystedt/Musty are breaking into the NHL. Couture likely only gets traded if he says he wants out to chase a cup somewhere, but based on his previous comments that's unlikely.

The Sharks aren't retaining any amount on Hertl for 7 years. Retention slots are a limited resource. Also a 1st, a rental and a C-tier prospect don't come close even without the retention.
Hertl is great and the Sharks have zero need to trade him. It only happens if the package coming back is crazy good, and with Nashville that means players like Askarov, Kemell or Wood. The deal has to be so good we'd be stupid to say no, otherwise why trade him at all?

Cap Flexibility
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rob32sjsharks</b></div><div>Trading Karlsson isn’t about cap flexibility, sharks already have that, it’s about admitting we’re rebuilding and trying to obtain some futures for the last great blunder from Doug Wilson regime.
Sharks are likely 2-3 years from going after any high priced FA or thinking about a legit playoff run.
Smart money is that the sharks cave and accept less than idea trade for Karlsson (or retain 50% for a better return) and focus on getting through the year to TDL.
Barabanov I could see the sharks resigning he’s a great guy and good player and would be a solid bet to have around the younger guys. Duclair is a potential but we won’t know till he is acclimated to the team.
But if the right offer comes in for either I would pull the trigger.</div></div>
Exactly, which is why Seravalli's comments didn't sit well with me.

It would be a priority if they wanted to keep EK69 and get better, which is the point of this...</div></div>
We were pretty bad last year with Karlsson and Timo for a majority of the year. Then Timo got traded and we fell straight off a cliff. The team you have here might be good enough to climb a slot or two higher in the standings. Just enough to still not make the playoffs and give us a worse draft pick ( that we stupidly traded away), all the while trading away our future and handicapping ourselves with two more terrible way too long contracts.
This whole concept just delays us getting back to contention and ensures we'll be supremely mediocre for a long long time. We're going to suck next year no matter what. We might as well wait it out and buyout Vlasic next year or the year after if we need to.

That trade is horrible for San Jose.
Getting rid of Vlasic's contract is not even kind of a priority and Eklund and that (probably top 5) 1st round pick are a MAJOR part of our future. Our goal is to get back to being a perennial contender. This deal absolutely moves us much farther away from it.

Pittsburghs Second Offer to SJS
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EzraK11</b></div><div>Pittsburgh already offered SJS:
-Jeff Petry
-2024 1st Round Pick
-2025 2nd Round Pick (conditional 1st)
-Sam Poulin
-Ty Smith
This would be their second offer where they would again include Petry, offload Grandlund, swap old Jeff Carter for Anthony Duclair, add Owen Pickering to sweeten the deal and include their original pick offers for 2024/2025 from the previous offer.
A very rich offer for SJS to re-consider but a serious power move to make Pittsburgh and offensive juggernaut and instantly push them back into cup contention for the rest of Crosby/Malkin/Letang's final years.</div></div>
That's Sheng Peng's guess at what the Penguins might offer, and not an actual rumored offer. Its pure speculation (as he points out in the article), but people keep taking it as fact for some reason.
