The Draisaitl value i definitely questionable unless you know Zadina is going to become a star. Also one thing that actually GMs take into consideration is the effect that a trade like that is going to have on future signings and team morale. you just sign Draisaitl to a long term deal which he signed to ensure stability and show his commitment and then you deal him after one year, the team is going to have a hard time signing future top players long term and free agents which because of the Oilers location would only add another reason for a player not to sign there.

the Larsson and Nurse trades are horrendous. you are trading nurse and larrson for less than what you are giving up for nuge. Faulk is at best a top four dman. I wouldnt trade nugent hopkins for faulk as i would want a guy who could be a top pairing dman like Larsson

I recognize this thread is about the contract for a backup goalie, which was a need in EDM - but Montoya is still signed for 18-19. Make it 3.5 million and change that is now committed to the 2G position, with no real assurances that it will improve. Compare EDM's cap# spent on goalies (~7.75m) to some Western conference playoff teams: LA* (Quick/Campbell, 6.475m), MIN* (Dubnyk/Stalock, &lt;5m), or even the Jets, who spent exactly 7.5m on a pupu platter of 3 goalies in 17-18 and had Helly emerge to submit an Allstar season.

How is it possible that a franchise has had a top 10 pick every year from 2009-2016, had a top 5 player in the league for 3 years playing for under 1 million, and only won ONE playoff round??? Simple, they have mismanaged every single decision that has required even a modicum of thought, even the backup goaltending.

they are not gonna keep three goalies up in the NHL. if they keep Montoya they will likely bury his contract in the AHL which wont count toward the cap or will only be a couple hundred thousand i think

that is another reason why the bridge deal works too. By the time that it will expire both Russell and Sekera will be trade-able as there no move clause requires them to provide a 15 team list by then. whether or not the oilers would have to retain salary would be the issue. Lucic will be a tougher contract to move but hopefully the cap increases each year in the coming years which will reduce the impact.
