I don't think he sucks. He is big, throws hits, starts 70% of his shifts in the d-zone 5v5 and suppresses chances. Average FO, doesn't give the puck away a lot.
Something the Leafs are missing and would be a value contract at 2m for 3 yrs.

Severson is only the first example of this.</div></div>
Calgary ain't taking that deal, not a chance. So you can stand by it all you want but it ain't happening.
Logan Shaw was the Marlies 1C. Holmberg is not viable NHL 3C yet in his career.

Amirov has no value. Not until he returns to a good league and shows what hes capable of. Murray is negative value. Robertson's value is low.
Murray is due 8m dollars. Crouse is due 5m and is a capable player. I think our 28th overall pick is the starting point on him. Quality over quantity.

McCabe was disastrous for the Leafs in the playoffs.
But if you want to talk about trading Matthews or Nylander. Well if they are traded, the Leafs won't bet as good this season. Just my opinion, Matthews won't be resigning as a Leafs, so if the Leafs were to trade him, I would't be disappointed.</div></div>
I'd rather overpay on this website so their aren't 30 hawks fans in here crying about it. And their aren't really any top RHD available, as they rarely are. Murphy will be capable of playing those minutes and will bring something that only Luke Schenn has on our back end, with more ability. Clearing the center of the ice is what Vegas has done so successfully all playoffs and that's something we don't have.
If I knew Matthews wasn't signing here I would be all for it but I don't see that as a fact. It's possible, but I think its more likely he stays imo. If its possible to make our team better by trading Nylander than go for it but thats not the answer for me personally because I don't see us getting better. theres 50 players id want over Murphy that just aren't really available. Supplementing the core is how i see this shaking out IMO

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Really? The reason the Leafs lost the Panthers wasn't defence but the lack of goal especially from the high priced forwards.</div></div>
So they couldn't score against Florida so we shouldn't try to improve our defence? There's about 100 threads a day trading Matthews, or Marner or Nylander so maybe those are more your speed. Murphy would be a great pair for Rielly and we would be improving our defence by a lot. There is no player you can acquire thats guaranteed to show up and score in the biggest moments, you can't trade a 3rd rd pick to Florida for the clutch goal perk. ROR came in as a big time clutch guy and he didnt get it done either. Team wasn't good enough to get it done.

No reason to acquire a big RD who is defensively responsible? This is why the Leafs are never gonna win lmao watch a game of the Vegas series. I'd rather pay ROR for years 6m than add a 3rd year at 5m.
And their is about 6 guys in the bottom 9 that can play center so I think we are good on that dude

Everyone and their mother knows Calgary has to get rid of Vladar. I wouldn't expect a good return for him. Either way that is what I'm comfortable giving up, probably would look elsewhere if that doesn't get it done.
He got a 3rd for him when he was on a cheaper deal with seemingly more upside.

Toews for nylander cap wise long term makes more sense but I assume Avs want to keep Toews as he’s more important to a cup contender this coming season.</div></div>
Byram is too valuable to give up for a pending UFA. Even if they get an extension done with Nylander, Byram has shown a lot for a 21 year old who is going to be on a cheap bridge deal, and then on a cheaper deal than Nylander is going to get long term after the bridge. The amount of control the Avs have on a 21 year old top 4 d with a lot of upside is just too valuable. I know it sounds weird if youre just looking at production but there is a lot more to value than that.
Avs are going to bridge Byram and fill out their roster with contracts that wont interfere with the possibility of bringing Landy back next year and until they know for sure if he can come back or not, then make decisions longer term to replace him.

Byram is a controlled asset, Nylander has 1 year left on his deal and is expecting a nice bump in salary. I don't think the Avs can fit Nylander in their current structure unless they make bigger changes. Byram will be cheaper and is young and effective.

Dumping Murray is not worth a second. The leafs would never make that trade and have many options that we would consider before we would ever consider doing that.

I’m a big fan of Woll and he showed promise last year, I’m just not certain it’s the best idea to have him start the year on the main roster. He can eat up a big chunk of games in the AHL and continue developing and if there’s a scenario where we need him we can bring him up and he can become full time on the big club as we won’t be able to send him back down.
Again, it’s not a big deal as I have confidence in the guy and in a lot of my rosters I have him starting the year with the Leafs but I don’t think it’s a bad idea either way.

Waivers start 12 days before the season starts. They will know before then if Woll will be the full time back up or not. And can start with the Marlies if they decide to bring in another goalie.

That’s your opinion. I love Woll and I’m comfortable with him playing a meaningful amount of games this year but if Samsonov is injured you want to have someone else who can take some of the load.
It’s not a NEED but in my opinion getting a guy with 1 year left on his deal like Monty can let Woll play a **** ton of games in the AHL and step in next year with another season under his belt.
Just my opinion I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing someone else in.

I think all those points you’ve made are what has drawn me towards including him on this list. I agree that he would be a compliment to Rielly and he holds some traits that the Leafs really need by a player who can eat good minutes.
Thanks for your input.
