Yup. And my answer to that is who cares? Be horrible for a couple years, draft elite talent in the top 3, rinse, and repeat.

Once again who cares about the term. This team is gonna be god awful in a few years anyways and will need to reach the floor. Plus as I mentioned regarding the Letang contract, the last year of Genos deal could very well be LTIR.
Hextall had 4 key FAs this year and brought them all back at a combined discount. Good work.

(MTL/CHI) - 2022 1st round pick (NYI) + 2022 3rd round pick for Dach
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sammy_daws1997</b></div><div>I dont really get this trade. If MTL truly thought Wright and Slaf were close for the 1OA spot (as most reports say), why were they not sprinting to trade for 4OA with Seattle instead of landing Dach? Based on most draft value charts, 13OA + 26OA + 66OA should be enough to get 4OA. Even if Seattle wanted more, if MTL was in fact really high on Wright then they should have had no issue throwing in someone like Josh Anderson..
Obviously it would depend on if Seattle was willing to make this trade. Maybe Seattle had wright as the 1OA pick and treated his value as such..
I just dont think Dach will be the 2C that MTL is hoping he will be.</div></div>
That’s originally what I thought was happening. I was screaming at the TV watching Gary announce it. If MTL somehow acquired 4th overall, that may have been the greatest GM masterclass I have ever seen…

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Kris Letang (6 Years / $6,100,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tmclean64</b></div><div>Interesting.. I wonder if this type of contract will result in a change of rules for all 35+ contracts regarding LTIR. Clearly they are circumventing the cap to lower the aav with years 4-6. Call me a salty Canucks fan but I dont see how this is much different from what the Canucks did with Luongo.</div></div>
It’s a fair point. I guess we’ll have to see by the next CBA. The difference I see is that Letang genuinely would have to be “injured” to be placed on LTIR. As I’ve said many times in this thread given his history, it’s very possible
Luongo obviously just decided he no longer wanted to play.
I guess if the league wanted to enforce some sort of rule to prevent this sort of thing I think it would be rather difficult. I think it’s unfair to ban LTIR for players signing over 35 and I don’t think that’ll happen. Can the league prove there was “Ill intent” when signing this contract? I think it’s very difficult to.
I do think this deal is a bit of “legal” circumvention

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>And SO WHAT if he's still playing in 5 or 6 years? Crosby might be gone, Malkin will definitely be gone, other big-ticket guys might be gone, and the cap will have been raised significantly. His cap hit won't be terrible. The idea of paying out $36.6 million over 6 years is much better than $34 million over the next four. Most people on this site don't understand the concept of the "present value" of money -- i.e., that the value of a dollar today is more than a dollar next year, and a $$$$load more than a dollar in 6 years. Such people think that $8 million for 4 years would be a fine deal, but $4 million for 8 years is horrible. Astounding.</div></div>
That’s an excellent point as well. And Pens in the later years of the contract will likely need to hit the cap floor regardless. If Letang is somehow playing, they’ll be a bottom feeder team who could use his leadership.
Pens will remain competitive as long sid is playing. Once he’s gone, they’ll be full tank SZN, which lines up with the later years of Letang’s deal. I see no real risk

God you are insufferable. I’m not actively cheering for injuries. I’m stating that given his history it’s likely inevitable. I love Letang and I’m thrilled to have him back.
I’m just calling a spade a spade. He won’t finish this deal. I’m sure he’s very aware of that as well. Playing a professional sport in the best league in the world at 41 is very difficult, especially given his history. Move along pal. Find somebody else to troll

Thank you! I just understand his injury history and really don’t think he’ll play out the whole deal. It’s a win for Pittsburgh because it keeps the AAV low and a win for Letang because he gets a lot of term, even in years that he isn’t playing.
In 6 years from now, if he is somehow still playing I’ll eat my words, but I really just don’t see it.

This contract is absolutely brilliant. Do you really think for a second that Kris Letang given his injury history will play out the entirety of the contract? Absolutely not. He will be sent on LTIR like the Weber / hosss deals towards the end. The contract kept the AAV ridiculously low for the initial years of the deal, and in the “ugly” years of the contract, he will be on LTIR.
