TRYING to have a quick turn around
EDM retaining 2.5mil on Campbell defeats the purpose of trading him as his buyout is either less than 2.5mil or slightly above (in year 3). The only thing they'd save is the 1.5mil for 3 years at the end which, in the grand scheme of things, is pretty minimal. On top of that, you have them making said trade in order to acquire a goalie that they don't really need (unless you don't trust Skinner after his performance so far). The trade simply makes no sense for EDM.
Since I'm unclear on where you're drawing the line between cost to dump Campbell and cost to acquire Jarry, I'll refrain from commenting on the value.

Merzlikins solution
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mm1010</b></div><div>That would actually get them a bit of breathing room taking on elvis would keep them more cap strapped. There back up next year will probably be 1M or under with the buyout hit that only 2.5 against the cap vs elvis 5.4M cap hit.
only somewhat bigger contracts are foegele and henrique( if they want to keep him) additionally you will probably see kulak moved to make room for broberg clearing more cap. They will spend to the cap but have enough wiggle room</div></div>
Yeah, it only makes sense for Edmonton if they believe in Merzlikins. If they don't, Columbus will either trade Merzlikins for someone like Kuemper as mentioned above or buy Merzlikins out and sign someone like Brossoit, which should save them some cap space.

Yah, people have. People also say a lot of our players are “cap dumps”. Ceci, Kulak, Campbell, Kane etc. Campbell is, I can agree, but the other three are no where near being cap dumps.

Don't forget Benning played in Edmonton for years, we know exactly what he brings.

BS. He's 3rd pairing by both TOI and QoC this year, on the worst team in the league. He's not even as good as he was when he played in Edmonton.

Honest Thoughts
Edmonton's situation with Campbell is always going to come down to the salary cap.
Conventional wisdom suggests that unless there's a team willing to take Campbell on as the cap-recapture part of a deal, or to take him for cheap, the Oilers are aiming to buy Soup out in the summer. A few AGM's I've tinkered with for next year have seen Edmonton run a cheap backup to Skinner - I typically use Rodrigue here - because the equal-to-or-greater-than $3M bonus hit that Edmonton is getting from Connor Brown doesn't leave a lot of room for quality investment across the roster. Assuming Edmonton moves Kulak and buys Campbell out, and that the trio of Broberg, Holloway, and Rodrigue all sign for just their qualifying offers, the Oilers are looking at having a hair over $12M to find two top-six wingers, a middle-six winger, a #4C, and a #2RD.
Do I think Merzlikins has a really good chance to bounce back to form on a team that hasn't been as awful as Columbus has in recent memory? Absolutely. But it's coming at the loss of almost $3.5M in cap space (the difference between the sum cost of QO Rodrigue and Campbell's buyout and Elvis' cap hit) and could be the difference between Edmonton having to forsake improvements that are going to be absolutely crucial in other areas of the roster.
If Columbus does this with some sort of retention in exchange for an asset (how much for a first?) then it's much more amenable to where the Oilers are going to be this summer, but I still think that being able to use that $3.5M to add to the skating portion of the roster makes running a rookie backup tolerable, if not legitimately feasible.

Offseason repairs and boosts

It's a $5M change. They have other players to pay too, plus ~$3.5M in bonuses that will roll over to next year. They can't dedicate the entirety of the cap increase to Karlsson even if they wanted to.
Plus Draisaitl, Bouchard and McDavid all need new contracts before Karlsson's runs out.
There's zero chance of this happening.

Unless you're retaining 50% on EK, Edmonton declines. And even then, Nugent-Hopkins declines. He negotiated that NMC for a reason.

Nope. This isn't it. The only one of those UFA's the Hawks might target is Monahan. But only if he is willing to sign a 1 or 2 year deal. Edmonton doesn't make that first trade. They won't pay a 2nd to move Ceci out. If that's all Raddysh is worth in a trade, Hawks probably just re-sign him. Hawks don't make that Calgary trade either. They aren't trading a highly regarded prospect like Allan for 1 season of Mangiapane.

3 teams. And the Oilers are pretty good defensively under Knoblauch. Since he took over Nov 12 they have allowed the 4th fewest goals at 5v5, due to the fact that they've allowed the 5th fewest shots and the 5th fewest high danger chances.
They also have the best record in the NHL in that timeframe.

Next year filling the holes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LAkingsfan77777</b></div><div>ANA wouldn't accept. they're taking on 2 cap dumb that aren't needed and they would want more for them. at least a 2nd and a later pick.
Broberg doesn't want to play for Edmonton anymore. might as well throw him in the trade with ANA. Would why EDM trade away Ceci just to get a player like Carrier. he's just a more offensive ceci and like him isn't a top 4 D. why not use the 5 mil that you used on Toffoli and spend it on a actual top 4 D like Pesce.
Also sign some other D a get Desharnais off the team, dude isn't good. you would probably be better of playing Pysyk instead of him.
Also Toffoli isn't needed when you have Kane. he's a goal scorer. just get some extra depth</div></div>
You seem to be misinformed here, not sure how much of the Oilers you watch.
Vincent Desharnais has been significantly better this season, and he's been a part of one of the most impressive analytical third pairings in the league this season. He worked super hard this off-season and it paid off. Oilers would be stupid to let him walk. But he likely gets more than 950k because other teams have been confirmed to have interest in him.
Broberg never said he didn't want to play in Edmonton. His agent came out and asked to explore trade options. His agent is notorious for stuff this, he's also the agent of William Nylander and look how Nylander "didn't want to play in Toronto". Ken Holland would have moved him before the deadline if he wasn't willing to play here, but Ken Holland specifically said that they wouldn't trade Broberg, as they see him as part of their future.
Also the creator of this ACGM specifically said that the trade wasn't to Anaheim, just that those 2 players needed to be traded.
I agree that the Oilers don't need Toffoli though
