Trading for the 8th overall -- long term
I don't think its a bad deal in terms of value, I just don't think it makes sense. The whole "chemistry" narrative between Raymond and Holtz doesn't add up when you consider they are both natural RWs, so competing for the same position, and don't play on the same team in the SHL. They literally only play together for Sweden and, even then, they're not on the same line.
Overall, LW just isn't a need for us and I wouldn't want to invest in two RWs like that (like Laine and Connor in WPG right now). As OldNYIfan says, if Drysdale + Raymond + Holtz were available, it might be worth considering as we could address the core weaknesses in our prospect pool in one go. However, I very much doubt Drysdale makes it past DET and OTT. In that case, I think it makes more sense for us to just draft one of Rossi or Raymond and to keep Rakell and Henrique as veteran leaders for the near-future.

What’d you guys think of this team? Are they a contender?</div></div>
No... too many unproven prospects.
In any event, no way TOR does that deal for Marner. He's worth considerably more than that, even if he is very expensive.
I don't understand the Silf deal either. A solid contributor and playoff beast for scraps.

Seems like the chance for Getzlaf to really compete for another Cup with u guys is over</div></div>
Yeah, Getzlaf is on the decline now. He's still a competent top liner, but no longer elite. He's still got the hands and IQ, but has lost a step too many at this point. I don't think he's moved. We have too much respect for him to do that.
I think we'd be interested in moving Rakell in the right deal. I don't think Lindholm, Fowler or Manson are available though.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>asauer1122</b></div><div>So you wanna pay 6 mill for the next 6 years to an already 30 year old who averaged 20-22 goals/45 points in his prime which is past him for our 8th OA in an insanely deep first round especially top 10. I think the main aim in adding Henrique is that he'd be a relatively cheap addition that can make an immediate impact, which is exactly what you need to keep Eichel from putting in a trade request.

My thought was Asplund or Tage Thompson bc they’re NHL ready guys who can play on the 3rd line, Tage having a higher ceiling depending on his skating improving
And then we’d add a pick like a high 3rd, maybe even that high 2nd</div></div>
I mean, I think that is reasonable value. I was thinking probably a couple 2nds or equivalent value, which is exactly what Asplund/Tage + 2nd would be.

Henrique is available at the right price. I'm not sure Asplund or Tage would be that interesting though. I doubt Rakell is available unless we have a RD prospect coming back the other way.

2017-18: 51.55% (+3.38)
2018-19: 55.84% (+12.22)
2019-20: 58.97% (+10.77)
His point production is good too, and steadily improving:

2017-18: 0.85
2018-19: 0.86
2019-20: 0.91
To put these numbers into perspective for you, Hampus Lindholm hasn't matched them even once.
2016-17: 0.69 P/60
2017-18: 0.84
2018-19: 0.68
2019-20: 0.63
Cam Fowler did better this year, but that was the first time:
2016-17: 0.71 P/60
2017-18: 0.83
2018-19: 0.66
2019-20: 1.11
That 3rd round pick has a very, very low chance of becoming the player Matt Benning is today.
And just try finding a UFA with those numbers for $2M. I don't think you will.</div></div>
Hmmmm... you make a compelling case. I mean, there are some elements that haven't been considered, namely quality of competition when comparing his numbers to Lindholm and Fowler. Moreover, there is an assumption that Benning would accept a $2M per year contract? Seems kind of low to me. In any event, I am happy to concede the point and agree that he'd be a very good addition at just a 3rd round pick. Even getting 3rd pairing minutes against bottom 6 competition, his numbers are impressive.
Have your staff send over the paperwork :p

Look, you both might be right that Benning could net a 2nd pick. I disagree. I don't think anyone gives up a significant asset like that for a pending RFA. It provides too much leverage and means you'll be overpaying on the next contract. I could see a team giving up a 3rd round pick, but, personally, it is not a deal I would do as it really doesn't achieve anything for us. We're retooling/rebuilding. Would rather just keep the 3rd and draft with it. A 3rd pairing guy can be picked up from FA.

The lower you finish in the standings means you have a higher chance of winning it. That's how odds work bud.</div></div>
18% chance = guaranteed success? GOT IT! :awesome
Believing you're going to win the cup with a bunch of kids is moronic. Who was the last team to win the cup with everyone under the age of 25? The notion that the recipe to quickly turnaround a rebuild is to ship out anyone over the age of 25 for picks and prospects is just stupid. Aside from the fact you are not guaranteed 1st OA, or even a top 3 pick, even if you do tank, all prospects come with risk and could not pan out as expected. Like seriously, who do we have to replace Lindholm? I mean, you clearly know my team better than I do. So who in our prospect pool can replace Lindholm as a top line D? Or who can we draft that will replace him that isn't at least 4-5 years away from doing so.
Also, you do realise that having a team that constantly sucks for years isn't good for prospect development or their compete level? and that you can't teach experience and need veterans in your line-up to guide young prospects through the new challenges. Nah.... of course you don't. You're a TOR fan. Just rip it all down and start again. Getting knocked out of the 1st round every year to a team that didn't just blow it up and kept the likes of Marchand, Bergeron, Krejci, etc. during their struggling years is good enough for you, eh?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jack_</b></div><div>I dont think you understand how age curves work or how rebuilding works either kiddo.

Fair enough, but Weegar's injury-prone nature makes him a no go for me. Didn't we kind of just move Kase for the same reason?
In terms of the draft, I completely agree. Personally, I am not that high on Drysdale. He seems like another Fowler based on what I've read, maybe with high scoring potential. In any event, we need a Hedman. I think he's being pushed up the draft due to the lack of good D-men this year, same as when Haydyn Fleury was drafted in 2014 (CAR could have drafted W. Nylander or Ehlers). My guess would be we get Raymond. Seems like a perfect fit for us with all the other Swedes on roster and is another kid playing in the SHL like Lundestrom. I just hope we don't get Perfetti. IMO, his compete level is too low for him to be an impact player in the NHL and, whilst impressive on the puck, his defensive game is extremely weak. His skating is also very average.

Not sure I am a big believer in Weegar. Kid looks like a #4, but seems injury prone. We need less injury prone players, not more. I think with us not winning the draft, moving Rakell makes a lot less sense than it did before, especially considering we may get lucky and draft Drysdale. Personally, I would only really consider moving Rakell for help at RD. This isn't to say that we shouldn't consider moving him later in the year. If Comtois breaks out, Rakell becomes expendable and he'd probably bring in a nice haul at the TDL.
Mrazek is a solid add. I wouldn't be disappointed in that deal. He's fun to watch and we have the money.

What you don't understand is that tanking doesn't guarantee success anymore. You literally just watched DET go from #1OA to #4OA. After yesterday
Okay, I am open to moving Rakell in the right deal because I am big believer in Comtois and I think good wingers can be picked up later in the draft i.e. how we got Rakell. However, I have no idea why you are desperate to trade our only top line D? Who we have no replacement for and is only 26 years old might I add. How do we replace Lindholm? We aren't getting a top 10 pick for him because the teams that get those don't need Lindholm, they need to draft, just like we do. So you're looking at later 1st round picks, later 1st round prospects, and maybe a roster player. Do you really think the solution for this team is to continue to draft more and more good, but not elite talent? I don't. Even if we did get a high pick, D-men are difficult to predict. Even if we draft one high, they may not end up as good as Lindholm. Seriously, trading Lindholm does nothing but makes us even worse. I don't see that as a good thing for young players trying to develop. That is literally EDM and it took a generational talent in McDavid + Drai to get them out of that bad habit... and I'm not even convinced they're out of it.
I appreciate that the draft lottery was a bit of a disappointment, but doesn't it also demonstrate that the way to turning things around isn't just tanking. DET just got screwed. Meanwhile, last year's NYR/CHI and, to some degree, LA this season are a good example of how teams are able to get better without jeopardising a good draft choice. Our route out of this decline is absolutely through the draft, but a secondary to that is making smart deals and that allow the kids we do bring in to grow in an environment with veterans that have been their, had the experience and are capable of guiding them through new challenges. Trading anyone over the age of 25 with any value goes against that and means we're essentially sending out our prospects to be eaten alive by other teams. That doesn't sound like a recipe for success.
P.S. The Silf deal is fine. In any event, you're assuming BM had good offers on the table. If the best offer he had was a 2nd + B prospect, would you take it? I wouldn't. Not to mention that Silf is a great playoff performer. He's going to be an excellent leader once we do make it back into the playoffs.
