They can have whatever asking price they like, nobody in their right mind is going to give you anywhere near that for him. So, ask away, but prepare to be disappointed.

Yeah I saw your description, it just seems every transaction on here right now has the Leafs dumping Brodie and it makes no sense.
I would argue you can better entice Matthews and Nylander to stay long-term if you stop trading away your first round pick every year. Eventually they will want talent coming up to support them. But even if you do want to move the picks, you can do a lot better than Scott Laughton for that package. Issue is more of the player than the strategy.

Assuming he plays at all. He's only played one full season in the NHL. He generally grades out as a 0.5 PPG player or worse. That's not worth the big cap hit and long-term deal he has. Montreal doesn't have to move him since they have cap room, but it's not like he's an asset. And he's 29, he is who he is. He'll probably only get slower too.

Trading/Buying out Brodie makes very little sense. This rumour is ridiculous.
Why trade all of that to Philly for a 3rd line winger? That's a huge package you can use to land someone better or just keep because draft picks are good

I like the out of the box thinking on the Capitals move. Not sure if they'd go for it, but it's creative.
Not sure I like the Calgary move. Samsonov is better than Vladar and Hanifan needs a new contract the same time as Nylaner and Matthews. That's tough.

I'd even go as far as saying I wouldn't mind Matthews or Nylander traded before the season starts, so the Leafs clear the air on their status over if they would resign in 24/25. It's my opinion that Matthews doesn't want to resign with the Leafs.....Eight years or nine years is enough.
Maybe best long term solution is for the Leafs is to go into 24/25 with lots of cap....some young assets or picks from the Matthews/Nylander trades and have a capable GM who knows appreciates the cap and how it works.</div></div>
We definitely disagree on the best long term solution. I'd much rather have Matthews, Nylander and Marner signed for long-term deals and then continue to build around them. They're all excellent players. It's going to be extremely difficult for the Leafs to add more gamebreaking offensive players since they generally have to be drafted high, and the Leafs won't draft there again anytime soon. I'd hate to lose any.
Totally fine to disagree. I can definitely see the opposite side it's just not what I would want to do. If you asked the Capitals after 8-9 years of Ovi, Kuznetsov etc. if they wanted to bail they might have said yes, but it's worked out for them.

You've given up too much for Dubois here, especially if he doesn't come with an extension. Winnipeg needs to trade him and he's going to have input in where he goes. That's going to drive the price down.

In terms of Domi, he is a good scoring forward who has chemistry with Marner, has always been linked to the Leafs and can play both C and wing. He is known to come up in clutch moments and raises his game the bigger the stakes. He also has some nastiness in his game that fans love. I have ALWAYS wanted him on the Leafs since he has been drafted. Think of him as a Bunting replacement. Saying the Leafs shouldn't get him because of his expected goals and awful defensive game is just ludicrous. I think he would fit well here.</div></div>
It's ludicrous to use statistics, resources and historical performance instead of your personal opinion? Rrrrrrright....

Offseason 12
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>klaw2</b></div><div>Domi is a perfect fit for this team. With the cap going up these deals should be a little more palatable.
Brodie was injured this past season, and struggled in the playoffs. Also Treliving tried to trade him once (to the Leafs), and didn't opt to resign him when he turned to become a Free Agent.
Add in Pittsburgh's need for a D and they have cap space, with Dubas in charge this move makes a ton of sense.</div></div>
The salary cap increase is not enough to resign Nylander and Matthews. Keeping Brodie (and his expiring contract) is important in that sense. He's also still really good (I'd rather have him that Soucy).
Please explain why Max Domi is a perfect fit for this team. He scores a ton of points but grades out as a negative expected goals player because of his awful defence. He isn't particularly great at forechecking or zone entries. There's a reason he's been on so many teams, why should the Leafs give him all that money?

Let's be realistic here. The Ducks might not want to move the pick, but to say this is a laughable offer is completely false. This is a great offer if they want to move back a spot. If they don't, then obviously no offer is worth it, but let's keep rational and civil discourse.

I can not understand why so many people want to trade TJ Brodie when he's our best defenceman. Those UFA contracts to Domi and ORielly are going to be trouble and they're going to prevent you from having cap flexibility to resign Matthews and Nylander.

This trade makes no sense. All of those guys have potential NHL futures and certainly worth more than draft picks especially with their contract value.
No way Matthews signs that deal either. If it's 13 million it's 3 or 4 years max.

Instead of acquiring Laughton
The Goodrow trade shows some creativity. Props on that. I could see a scenario where something like that comes true.
I don't see any reason to trade Brodie. He's an extremely good NHL defender on a team that doesn't have a ton of those. A major upgrade would have to come along with that and Soucy isn't it.
I could see Toronto going after Schmalz but I'm not certain he's a slam dunk to be traded. Arizona needs to keep some players and Schmalz (Keller and Crouse are in the same boat) have re-signed there. The team may be hesitant to move everyone who's a good player or what's left?
I can't see them spending big cash on O'Rielly if they get Schmalz. Just limits their ability to resign Matthews and Nylander.

I don't think Toronto wants to make that Seattle trade. That's all futures for an NHL all-star and consistent 90 point player. I don't think that fits Toronto's timeline or what they would want in a deal. Trading Marner has to help make their team better (or at least similar) this year and this does not do that. Whether or not it's equal value can be argued (I personally would want more) but I don't think this is a framework that makes sense.

Terrible trade for Toronto. It's hard to know if Winnipeg wants to sell things off or try and compete another year. I would think the smart move would be to sell off their guys with one year left and do a soft reset maybe centred around some of their younger talent. If they do that they won't want Marner because he's likely to leave in two years.

Toronto doesn't do the deal as is. They don't need a goalie and aren't spending all that on a winger. They'll buy Murray out before giving up a first for him, no matter what fantasy you believe.
The Leafs are not at all desperate, so don't make them out to be. And if these highly-coveted Flyers players are so great and worth so much... why have the Flyers been so bad?

Laughton may be penciled in to a middle 6 player on this team, but he also brings leadership, a very responsible defensive game, and also is coming off the best season of his career, and still is on the right side of 30 with a very, very affordable cap hit.
I understand putting them in a box when arguing what their value is and how much to give up for them, but they are both much more than just middle 6 players, IMO.</div></div>
Konecny had a good scoring year this year for sure. But he's had some rough years as well. I don't think he's a slam dunk top line guy for the Leafs. He's also scored one goal in 22 playoff games, which may or may not be his fault but that's when the Leafs need scoring. He's totally fine but not at the ransom Philadelphia fans believe he will get.
