<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>You realize that McLeod was the center on that line, right? It speaks volumes that when Tippett decided to load up the top line, it was McLeod, not Nuge, who got the 2C gig. I wouldn't be surprised if the Oilers don't re-sign him - there are better wingers available this summer for less than what Nuge is asking for.</div></div>

Yes, as I've outlined above, I personally feel that RNH played himself out of being worth of a contract extension from the Oilers; I've also noted that he's more valuable to the Oilers as a winger rather than a centre (vs. other teams who will likely see him as a 2nd line centre). I also do believe that McLeod is going to be a great 3rd line centre with potential to be a 2nd line at some point. While Nuge, McLeod and Kassian played well together, Nuge and McLeod actually took turns at centre (McLeod has only played centre so he's sometimes a liability on wing while RNH is a responsible player in both positions). Specifically, once the Jets tied and the game moved to Overtime, McLeod sat and watched from the bench the entire time while RNH was deployed as the second centre. Taking that into consideration, I would not agree that Tippett preferred McLeod over RNH at the centre position, rather, he was experimenting with what worked as secondary scoring to allow him to keep McDaddy and Drai together.

All of that said, I do believe McLeod has a promising centre and 100% believe that he will be the third line centre at some point during the 2021-22 season. To help him get acclimated, he should continue to be deployed with RNH and they can continue to swap out at centre. Once he's proving to be able to handle 3C full time, move RNH back to the wing with Drai.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I wouldn't mind Hall or Hamilton but I probably wouldn't sign either to term as they aren't what the team needs at all. A guy like Seth Jones (UFA 2022) is FAR more enticing than Hamilton IMO. Personally I think they'll resign either Larsson or Barrie to a short-term deal and pursue a Jones / Parayko type the following summer.

There are tons of better forwards than Hall slated to become UFA's in 2022 as well, so there's no reason to give Hall term. Or $7M, the way he's been playing.</div></div>

I disagree about Hall and Hamilton not being what the Oilers need now. With McDavid and Draisaitl now well I to their careers and primes, the Oilers should be looking at “win now”, or “win within a year or two” type signings.

That said, I do agree that there are potentially other UFA LW’s this summer, Hamilton is without a doubt the top d-man. What I’m trying to get at with head moves is that the Oilers need to make top tier signings that help them win within the next few years; not things that buy them one more year, or building up prospects. By the time that strategy pays its benefits, the McDaddy and Drai will be nearing the end of their current contracts (a scary thought for Oilers Fans).

PS. Seth Jones has been quite literally awful over the last few years. His advanced stats are completely underwhelming and suggest he’s a top-6 (top-4 at the highest) d-man. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ve always thought he was good, but I don’t ever watch him play, and the advanced stats speak for themselves. I don’t think Edmonton should be taking bets anymore; rather, pursue a sure thing (i.e. Hamilton).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DONTGIVEAPUCK13</b></div><div>IMO Hall wants to be a driver and I dont think he fits with McDavid in that position. Someone like Hyman (who has 10 goals vs Ovi 11) brings an element to that ine and has proven success with elite players. Could look at Hoffman or Saad as well but they have less goals this year as well.

Secondly you lose some key pices next with these signings: Bear, Nurse, Elvis... all need new contracts at higher cap hits and the cap probably stays flat</div></div>

I love the idea of Hoffman playing with McDavid as well. For whatever reason, I just can’t buy into the Hyman hype, though he definitely has been if playing unreal. So yes, someone at lesser $$ and term than Hall makes sense.

For the following season, if Kelf is healthy, I think you look into cashing in on a trade. Frees up $4.17MM and could likely steal a 1st rounder for him. At that point, I’m assuming Broberg will be ready for top-4 (at least top-6) minutes. And as proven this year, the Oilers can survive without Klefbom.

I’d also suggest that by the beginning of the 22/23 season, Holland will realize that it’s time to move on from Kassian and could look to dump him in some trade or buy him out.

Between these two moves, plus the already $22.0MM available, the Oilers would be looking at close to $30.0MM in cap space. To your point, it’s a flat cap, so the players will be feeling it too and won’t be able to demand huge pay raises either. I suspect the Oilers could likely sign all of those players and then some with $30.0MM.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>I have watched Kassian and the Oilers quite a lot actually. IMO though Ennis is a much better player to have alongside McDavid than Kassian is. I have heard that Kahun will play with Drai, so I figured Nuge would be with McDavid. I agree though that Nuge-Drai-Yama was the best line in hockey last season, I'd like to see them together again. Barrie won't be a 3rd pair D man, he needs top 4 time. Nurse-Bear pairing was good but too many mistakes, that's why I give Nurse and pretty steady guy like Larsson and put Bear with the surprisingly consistent and composed Jones</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>- Ennis is a LW, Kassian is a RW. It's not an Either/Or situation, as I mentioned above. Ennis is competing with Kahun and Nugent-Hopkins for a top-6 LW spot.
- Probably Kahun will start TC with Draisaitl, but having them together is not a given.
- Barrie needs sheltered / offensive minutes, he can't handle Elite competition. Every NHL coach knows this. Playing bottom pairing doesn't necessarily reflect on his overall minutes.
- Nurse-Larsson was tried and it didn't work. Nurse-Bear worked very well in the second half of the year... 1st pairing is hard and its unreasonable to expect a rookie to excel in those minutes right away. Look at their results from January 1st onwards and you'll see what I mean. Tippett won't split them.</div></div>

These lines offer the best mix of players, and top-6 mix is the closest you can get to being supported by historical performance and stats:

Kahun/Ennis-McDaddy-Kassian
RNH-Drai-Yamo
Ennis/Kahun-Turris-PoolParty
Neal-JJ-Chaisson/Archie

Nurse-Bear
Jones/Russell-Larson
Russell/Jones-Barrie

I’d prefer to put Jones and Barrie out together in offensive zone starts, and Larson and Russell out for defensive zone starts.

Barrie is your PP quarterback so his even strength minutes/pairings is almost irrelevant as the top PP will get 75% of all penalty time; so his overall TOI will be reflective of top-4 mins. This also allows your best defensemen (Nurse-Bear) to play the most even strength minutes which exactly what you want.

With regards to your top line... Kahun is a better player than Ennis so I suspect Ennis is will pair up with PoolParty on your third line. It works out well as Kahun has the better shot. McDaddy is a puck possession player, and Kassian is your responsible defensive presence and big body in the o-zone allowing McDaddy to control play when he has the puck, and Let’s Kahun use his offensive mindset to position himself for high danger scoring chances. Ennis is also a possession player, so he will pair well with Poolparty who will be the trigger man on the third line. The long term plan here is to have PoolParty turn into a better Partner for McDaddy than Kassian is (PoolParty has similar qualities as Kassian in that he’s defensively responsible, and a big body, albeit doesn’t use his big frame to his advantage and throw himself around yet).
