I agree. Same age, same salary. BUF could use a center and CAR could use wingers. I think Okposo would do well with a scenery change. I think a 1 for 1 hockey trade could be made here. Plus Carolina has the cap room.

messing around
I love how people get so up in arms about Risto. He's a good trade chip and trading him for a forward could really improve our depth there. Sabres might miss Risto for the remainder of the season if he were traded, but his absence next season and beyond would not be a detriment to this team.
I would think people would be more upset about trading Nylander before he even turns 21 and whose ELC has been sliding and could contribute at a low cap hit for a couple years if he can break into the league.

Nylander bros
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jdfitz77</b></div><div>Metrics can be deceiving
ESPECIALLY Corsi, which is not a great stat for individual players’ effeciveness
Also...
if we were to trade Risto,
I’m not a big Willie Nylander fan
Gotta be for a winger that scores more goals
And we DESPERATELY would need to have a plan to get a legit top4 RH defenseman</div></div>
Analytics go way beyond corsi. Ristolainen is absolutely abysmal at defensive zone exits and opposition entry defense. He's not good at driving play. In the NHL you need defensemen who can start play up ice either with a crisp pass or possessing the puck through the neutral zone; they also need to prevent opponents from entering their zone. Ristolainen does neither of those things well. Risto is big, hits well, can provide electric offensive plays , and when established in either end, is a capable player. He's just a bum when it comes to moving the puck and transition hockey.
When it comes to trades I look at what we're losing vs what we're gaining and how replaceable are those things outside of a trade. Nylander is a top 6 forward, and the Sabres really need that, and outside of homegrown prospects, you're not going to be able to acquire many players at his age with his skill level. IMO, the Sabres can find a hard hitting defenseman to replace Ristolainen, and in fact, if the replaced him with a better puck moving defenseman, they would be even better for it.

Look at our top defensive pair...
good god- that’s horrendous
And Willie Nylander has been playing winger,

Maybe he could be moved back there,
but there’s just as good a chance he’s a winger
And his CapHit is over 10mil? F#ck that
He’s nowhere near that good
*i thought his Cap Hit was bear 7mil ?
Anyways...
definitely no to this trade
Hurts our defense too much
And i don’t wanna help Toronto be legit contenders either</div></div>
William Nylander's cap hit is 10 this year then jumps down to 6.9 per for the remainder. Also, yeah, the pairings here are whack, but the Sabres don't need Risto & he would not propel the Leafs to be any more legitimate contenders than they already are. And I doubt Dubas, as someone who respects analytics, would take Risto and his rancid metrics. I'd keep ERod and try to move a different forward if TOR needed an NHL ready player.

Did Matthews Have Coyote Pajamas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>zRxstrictxd</b></div><div>why would anyone do an offer sheet? Matthews could tell the leafs to do this stuff with teams and then sign with the leafs and get them more draft picks, dumb for any team</div></div>
Offer sheets are a super smart strategy. If you have the cap space you can snag great young hockey players from your rival teams, effectively making them worse while improving your squad. If done correctly, even if the owning team matches ,the team giving the offer sheet can hamstring the owning team against the cap by offering a contract higher than what they would have wanted to pay.
Does Toronto want to pay AM34 $14M per year? I don't know, probably not, but an offer sheet forces them to pay that or let Matthews go. Matthews at $14M per year in Toronto significantly affects what else they can do in regards to the cap. Does Marner even get a contract in Toronto if Matthews is making $14M/year?

My opinion on the lines with eichel back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>corsiagainst</b></div><div>You can't put mitts and Thompson together. I saw somewhere there CF% together was like 38% which is historically bad. They both might have a ton of offensive upside but are historically bad 5v5 defensively.
I'd flip Reinhart and Thompson. Reinhart can cover up for some of Mitts defensive deficiencies</div></div>
I agree. Mittelstadt definitely needs offensive skill to play with (Skinner), but let's be real, he (Mitts) gets pushed around a lot and is a defensive liability at times. It would be good to center him on a balanced line. Play him with a high offensive skilled player and also someone who can pick up the slack defensively. Skinner/Mittelstadt/Thompson just isn't defensively responsible enough IMO.

My opinion on the lines with eichel back
I was just thinking about this too and my thoughts were: Sheary/Eichel/Thompson -- Skinner/Mittelstadt/Okposo -- Smith/Rodrigues/Reinhart -- Girgensons/Larsson/Pominville. Regardless of what we think about a player here or a player there; we can mostly agree that Skinner/Eichel/Reinhart, while formidable, does not need to be a top line and spreading the wealth and balancing the lines will be better for this teams chances of making a a push for the playoffs this year.

Sorry, but I'm not taking on 30 yr old Patty Kane at 10.5 X 4 without sending Okposo the other way. Also I'm keeping Risto. I'm not against trading 55, but I don't really like him in a Kane trade.

How I'd have the opening night roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>Girgensons is a solid depth guy with experience that helps this lineup. BUF would be better off keeping him; certainly better off than getting a 5th rounder back.</div></div>
I'd say moving on from guys like Girgensons, Larsson, Pomminville, Beaulieu, is more about freeing up their roster spots for younger players, and not about getting any sort asset back in return. Obviously in a trade you get an asset for your asset, but freeing up space is something the Sabres need to do. The guys I mentioned do nothing for our team. The Sabres could fill their spots in the line up with younger players already in the system and they would perform at least the same if not better. I know we harp on development, development, development, but at some point the Sabres need to try and be good at hockey. The league is trending younger and younger with each passing year. Let the kids play, and move on from these terrible bottom 6 and 3rd pairing type of guys.

I'm comin' for ya Buffalo
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>wagsnags</b></div><div>I have seen a plethora of ROR deals to St. Louis and IMO if the Sabres want Parayko it will take ROR+.... therefore throwing Nylander in the deal would be advantage St. Louis..... then what would St. Louis have to add in order to get to equal value..... Ultimately your deal is too rich for St. Louis to make.... The Blues are giving up too much in your deal so I do not see that deal happening....
The questions I would have are as follows:
1. Do the Sabres really need Parayko as part of the return..... they have made such a huge investment on the defensive side with Dahlin, Pilut, Hickey (if they sign him), Hunwick, Samuelson, do they need to a Dman in the deal;
2. The Sabres should be looking at the forwards from St. Louis and Thomas is the target;
3. I also like Tage Thompson's game and his size;
What about this offer:
ROR
Nylander
McCabe
for
Thomas
Thompson
Kyrou</div></div>
If I were Sabres Gm Jason Botterill, I would do this; I wouldn't let Armstrong off the phone until the deal went through. I don't think STL gives up both Thomas and Kyrou, though.

Evander Kane for the 3peat! Comment

Kane would be a Penguin for 19 games and the playoffs. If you're looking to sign him for next season that's a different conversation, but he is mostly likely a straight up rental then out on the FA market this summer. He's a hard and fast skater who can shoot the puck. His toughness and physicality will be welcomed for a cup contender.
I don't think he will snorting coke and killing hookers while on the Pens cup run.
As a Sabre fan, I couldn't tell you the last date of one of his "antics".
