I mean, they aren't worthless pieces. Nobody is saying they can't play. It's essentially a bottom 6 center, middle six winger, and a good center prospect for two seconds and a middle six winger. It's relatively even steven given you have a near nhl ready young center with good potential coming back. It might be a bit skewed towards the leafs, but we're nitpicking over the part that isn't difficult to accomplish.

Yeah, I think I'd stipulated somewhere that that trade was purely "dump this cap" and could be done with anyone for picks/prospects of varying degrees.

So drop kappy, get a cheaper RW at like 1.5 and give hannafin 7x7 and Pesce 7x5.. Nylander will not be making 11, especially on an 8 year deal.

It doesn't even matter. Muzzin doesn't waive his NTC for Seattle, guaranteed and Dubas wants to maintain his image as a 'player friendly' GM. He's not going to oust Muzzin by pulling some shenanigans to get there.

The Calgary trade isn't terrible. I think where you go off the rails is the Muzzin trade. LA isn't going to give you Moore back. Dude was good secondary scoring on the cheapest of deals for another year, and they'll likely sign him again to a bigger deal after. And, if Muzzin stays, I'd say Sandin is the replacement of Robertson. It sucks, but LD are much easier to come by (and we already have a #1 in Rielly), with Niemi coming up behind.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>It depends upon who you're dealing with. Teams can have two different perspectives on the same player. To Toronto, Muzzin has value as a veteran defenseman, and if left to your own devices, he's going to play #2LD for you; in a perfect world, where every team could comfortably afford his cap hit (whether with retention or not), he'd be worth a second-round draft pick for sure. But this isn't an imaginary world. To rebuilding teams like Anaheim, IT IS IRRELEVANT HOW GOOD A PLAYER MUZZIN IS because they won't be getting to the playoffs this year for sure and probably not the season after that, either. So the only reason why a team like Anaheim or Arizona or Buffalo or Chicago or another no-hoper would be taking on his cap hit would be as a cap dump, no matter what you think about him. That means giving the Ducks an incentive, because Muzzin isn't getting the Ducks closer to the Stanley Cup.
You have to stop thinking that eliminating $5.625 million of ugly fat is "getting back absolutely nothing in return." What you'll be getting back in return is the opportunity to acquire or develop someone younger and cheaper and under team control longer if useful.
Finally, you Toronto guys should stop trading Muzzin to bottom-feeders and other non-contenders. Muzzin's NTC virtually guarantees he won't go to one of them. Why give up a spot on a Stanley Cup contender for the final two years of his career?</div></div>
The rumor is he'd only be willing to move to a Calafornian team, and Anaheim as a rebuild kinda fits the bill. That said, I'm still 50/50 on him actually waiving for that. The only way I see it happen is if he knows his career is winding down, he has his cups, and play out his days in California.

If by not better you mean 'essentially the same' then yeah, I suppose that's true. I made this roster mostly to see if even going the incredibly modest route would incite as much complaining as anything that actually makes any kind of real roster moves. Was tired of the 'No way this team takes this deal', 'Nobody wants this player' etc. And here we are, getting a modest return on Holl, and someone still complains.

I considered if it was possible to move Muzzin (suspect he'd only want to play for a contender or move back to California to finish his deal) to sign Kadri at 7 mil and move Tavares to the wing. Worst case then if Kadri were injured, Tavares would be able to shift to center, but you wouldn't end up with as full a roster (ie simmonds and clifford are in the minors). I know it'd be a long shot to get him back, but I think his level of grit and determination, while still being a very skilled net front presence would be a good addition to the Tavares line.

Av's fans are quite literally talking about 4-4.5 for Nichuskin, and Robertson's recent play in the big club is more of a 'im trying to do everything' than being a team player accomplishing a goal. He needs to settle down before I trust him on the second line. Also, if I'm worried about Kerfoot getting knocked off the puck, Robertson gets pushed off with a light breeze by comparison.

I can think of a lot better ways for the Canes to spend 3.5m. I’d rather have a solid 3rd pairing defenseman for 3.5m than Kerfoot making 3.5m playing 12 mins a night for the Canes.</div></div>
I mean, make it any playoff contender that's looking for some good secondary scoring, but it's not like the Canes couldn't have used a guy like Kerfoot regardless in the playoffs, and paying 3.5 million for a 3rd pairing D seems like a strange choice.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>Leaf fans want to trade him on here because they like to make UFA signings and he's the easiest way to do that. They did the same thing last year and he stuck it out. I very much doubt the Leafs move Kerfoot unless it's for an obvious upgrade (I doubt very much it's for picks as you often see here).
He has lots of value to the Leafs and I don't think they should trade him. The only issue is he doesn't seem to jive well with Matthews or Tavares (Kerfoot creates a lot of his own offence and does so for a bargain). It's not his fault he doesn't fit in our top-6, so I could see being moved for somebody similar who does.
In AGM's he gets traded all the time, so people think he stinks for some reason. He fits in a lot of places, it's baffling why it hasn't worked in Toronto (and he still has really good results).</div></div>
See my above. The answer is that he doesn't do well on puck retrieval in the corners, and neither does JT or Nylander. I don't think Robertson is there yet, so signing someone that is good defensively and good at puck retrieval, with some decent secondary scoring on a line with two prolific scorers seems the right way to go. Don't get me wrong. I like Kerfoot, but at the same time the leafs need to allocate cap to a line that works. Relegating Kerfoot to the third line is not an appropriate use of cap space, and like you've said, Kerfoot doesn't jive well with JT or Matthews.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GenXHockey</b></div><div>The short answer is leafs fans are stupid. The long answer is leafs need for a goalie and Robertson being able to take kerfoots spot. Certainly not on the pk though. But it's not like you are going to poke any holes in kerfoots game he is solid in all 3 zones kills penalties very well and produced on all 4 lines with no pp time.
The argument you proposed is that you could get a better forward cheaper. Don't get me wrong. I don't think the Kane's have interest in kerfoot. Think they are looking for a scoring top 6 winger. Kerfoot can fill that roll but I wouldn't say he is built for it.</div></div>
My trade out had a bit more to it than that. Nichuskin is taller, heavier, and better at puck retrieval than Kerfoot is. He also adds a defensive element to a line that has plenty of scoring with Tavares and Nylander, allowing Tavares to hold less of a defensive responsibility as he ages and slows down. So.. to sign him, you need to move out cap. Yes, Kerfoot was better on points, but JT and Nylander struggled because they had nobody that could retrieve a puck from the corners and work. They needed a Bunting/Hyman type to accomplish that goal. Hyman is gone and signed for more money. The Matthews line still needs that same type of person, so you can't move Bunting. And Kerfoot as hard of a worker as he is, gets pushed off the puck too easily.

I could see a world where this works tbh, but realistically I just don’t think it’s enough of an upgrade for the Leafs to come out satisfied. And the Sens don’t seem to gain much themselves, besides maybe a year of Kerfoot</div></div>
It's definitely more reclamation project kind of situation. The only advantage here is that Murray is younger, and has a history of winning behind him. He didn't play behind great teams when he wasn't great (during PIT's lull post-cups, then Ottawa while still rebuilding). On top of that, you have the Leafs medical staff to try to keep him together, and a backup that can likely take more games than he has in the past to give Murray some relief.
Everything is going to be a gamble, short of paying Campbell 4-4.5 mil, but he's also got injury history, is considered streaky, and has only had 1-2 seasons where he's performed well enough to be considered a starter (and is now 30). So... I don't know what the answer is, but if Campbell is looking for 4.5 x 5 or something, I don't know that I'd be comfortable with it enough to not try someone in a similar vein instead.

Every goalie is a bit of a gamble that's available. Murray has a good history behind him, and then some bad times when the Penguins sucked and Ottawa was still rebuilding. In front of an actual team, it might not be so bad. Not to mention the Greyhounds connection with Dubas, he may figure our goalie coaches and medical team can get him in great shape.
Kallgren is kind of a place holder. You could replace him with anyone (drop Simmonds to the minors or trade him) and still spend 1.5-2 on a different backup.

The way I saw it was, Gibson likely doesn't play into their contention timeline at this point. So, they save almost 4 million after Mrazek expires, get a decent center prospect on the cheap, and I'd suspect maybe a second first in the following year along with third (so 2x1st 1x3rd). Maybe I am undercutting the Ducks in this even with the second 1st rounder. I'm not super clear on their timeline.

I definitely had some pause with this. For that term and retention (I think it's 5 years now?), I think the Leafs might need to add next years first as well. I'd say they'd do it if they could assure Kadri sign's, because the window is now and not 5 years from now.
