Another Marner and Theodore Swap
What would be the point of Vegas trading a 60 point Dman for 95 point winger? The 5.7m difference in cap allows Vegas to sign Stephenson. And you think the Leafs get two picks too?

Marner to Utah
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Clark17</b></div><div>Which FA is as close to the level Marner is? You don’t see them come to market, and if they do there’s 30 teams in the league that might wanna take a shot a him. Sure Utah can try to sign a top player, but chances are they go the trade route.
Look at all their draft capital. They can’t go over 50 contracts so in a few years they will be losing guys they draft and can’t sign. Not ideal to have 30 picks the next few years in my opinion. Then they have the cap space. They won’t have to pay more than 950k this year for Marners services, an absolute steal for a top 5 RW. From there on it’s up to Utah to sign him to a contract that works for both parties, I’m sure that can get done, Utah will have a 8 year option and negotiation rights for the next year.</div></div>
You can be sure that Marner doesn't waive to poor team without am extension in place, or that Utah makes the deal without in place.
If Utah think it's wise to overpay for Marner in the trade or even the extension fine, but no reason for team to drastically overpay for any player,\
The 5th highest paid RWer gets paid 9.5m now. Marner has been overpaid in previous contract, so only a foolish team would continue the trend.

Marner to Utah
Maybe you gave the reason why Utah shouldn't do the trade. Marner maybe the 5th best RIGHT WINGER in the league. But he is the 9th highest paid PLAYER in the league. So you are conceding he is overpaid. So why should Utah overpay for him (he's overpaid now) in his new contract, and give up assets for him.
Wouldn't Utah be so much better trying their hand in getting free agency this summer.....they have the cap. If money is everything to players (it is for Marner), maybe they can sign a Cup winner.
Admitting Utah can save 10m in cap this next season, but they will be overpaying on an eight year contract .

Possible Theory for Capfriendly Buyout
When I see some of the signings the NHL GMs make (coming from a Leaf fan), far too many NHL GMs are poor at cap management. Maybe they should be CF fans, it might have helped them in their job.

Sad Day for the CapFriendly Site
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tkecanuck341</b></div><div>From what I understand, all NHL teams use this site to check cap situations around the league. If they buy it and turn it off to everyone but themselves, they'll have an immediate advantage over every other team in the league. Other teams will need to build their own versions from scratch.
Alternatively, they could sell access to other teams and make a ton of money.</div></div>
If that's the case, I'm surprised the NHL (which is the owners of the 32 NHL teams) wouldn't just buy CF and share the information among the themselves. I'm sure the current NHL teams use a type of CF individually.
They could still keep the site public....hey doesn't that help attract fans.

Markstrom for 10th Overall

Yep there are "lots" of good UFA older goalies available this summer. Most teams go with a 22 man roster, maybe the Flames carry three goalies to make 23 man roster. Gonna be interesting how the Flames spend their cap this summer. Do they fill with good UFAs to raise the their cap, and do they go the youngster route and kinda tank in 24/25 for long term gain.

Certainly the I understand the owners, taking a big payday
But don't really know what's in for the Capitals, by keeping the CF information private, as the other 31 teams really have the same info.
As you can tell my 60,000 posts, I enjoyed conversing with my CF pals. 99% of the people on this site were honest in their opinions which led to information sharing and good banter. Thanks to my CF pals for thoughtful posts and almost always good natured fun.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sadleaffan2002</b></div><div>What do you think a 5 year contract would have to look like? 9M+?</div></div>
Yes, but someone will offer him too much term. Personally, I would prefer the Leaf just keep Marner (and Minten) by this post. Then come summer 2025, figure out the cap and what positions need to be filled. Leafs MIGHT have more cap flexibility in 25/26 if some players like Cowan, Minten, Webber, Niemela, Grebykin can make the team and play above their low contracts.

Well that's not exactly true. You're depending on Couture being on LTIR for this year....and future years. Plus there might be bonuses to be paid.
Who doesn't like/love Reinhart and Guentzel? But paying guys who had career years and their new contract will take them into their late 30s....that's iffy.

Gee, I think there are more than that. Seems like by obtaining Markstrom it's just giving up more assets, and it's still not taking Sens to the playoffs. Look like a DeBrincat/Chychrun situation again.
