<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TMLBRIAN</b></div><div>I would also say that Hertl is a 2nd line centre. a VERY good 2nd line centre. But he is not a clear number one.
So I would say they are missing a full top line and a full top D pair and a #1 goalie.
Because they have Hertl they could get away with another really strong #2 guy.
Either way this team is still 3-4 years away. They have started collecting some pretty nice assets. I hope they can get Celebrini at the draft. That will help them a ton!</div></div>
I think with some good wingers you could have hertl as a 1C, the sharks just obviously don’t really have that either.
I’ve always been high on eklund but he hasn’t really taken the next step yet. Which ig makes sense without a puck moving dman another winger to play with and more

I'd give up a 3rd max for Benning. He's not bad, it's just pricey for a bottom pair d-man. I'd rather pay a 2nd+ for Fabbro.

Hertl Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>A straight swap of Geekie, Grzelcyk, and a high pick or prospect, without Campbell might do it.</div></div>
The reality is the trade was the return for Ullmark, Grzelcyk, Geekie, and Merkulov for Hertl and Kaapa partially retained.
From my perspective, you can work on whatever package with Edmonton you’d want. I could see Campbell at 50 percent retention and less draft capital.
I find most prospects struggle, which is why when you have a kid like Poitras, you embrace him. I like Holloway more than you. I think he’s worth a late first, but I can understand the hesitation

Leafs fan helping Oilers make playoffs
Desperate times may call for desperate measures, but with four teams involved, four sets of the world's smartest people are likely to come after you with half-sentence insult-critiques.
I will just wonder whether the Sharks would want to give up a player for Campbell, since he is so inconsistent, and might only be willing to accept all his cap space for the 1st, rather than lose a D man. I can see why new blood on the blue line might be necessary, but not sure they can get anything for Campbell...

Final 23 Man Roster Prediction
Rutta might also be on IR to start the season, we will see.
Risking Othotiyuk and Burroughs to waivers could be bad as both have value with their pre season play plus cheap contracts. The D has a lot of tough decisions in the next week and I wouldn’t want to be Quinn and Grier right now.
As for the lineup zetterlund has looked weak so far and I would swap him down to the 4th line.

Opening night roster If I had a say
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>I think Givani Smith has shown enough to make the NHL roster. I'm not a big fan of Jacob Peterson since his xGF% was about as good as Oskar Lindblom at 5v5 last season in a small sample. I would swap Smith in for him. Also wouldn't mind placing Lindblom on waivers.
It's gonna be tough to fit Okhotiuk, Emberson, Thrun, Burroughs, and Knyzhov. My best guess is they try to sneak Knyzhov through because of his 2 year deal.</div></div>
My biggest issue with Smith is one shift he shows flashes of really really good play followed up play very bonehead penalties or stupid plays. I don’t mind him as your 13th forward, but I don’t quite trust him as an every day player. Peterson has not looks good this preseason, but he had a pretty good showing to end last season so I kind of want to give him a chance to see if there’s anything there, but he will be on a short leash. I kind of have a sneaky feeling. Thrun ends up in the minors to start the season, which to me feel stupid because he has been one of the best defenseman we’ve had but he’s also waivers exempt. I don’t want to put a Emberson back on waivers and lose him back to the Rangers, I think it comes down to him or Othotiyuk.
There is a lot of factors here and I 100% get that what we feel is a bad decision might be better long term.

Opening Night Lineup
Sheng Peng (reporter for the sharks) talked with Quinn and said it's looking bleak for Couture to join them for opening night.
I don't think MacD makes the team either and is put on waivers. Bords stays on until Couture is back. I'm not 100% sure on Burroughs, I guess you can replace him with Knyzhov, but it's tough to figure out who would you rather place on waivers between Knyzhov, Burroughs, Simek (when healthy), and Emberson.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>Roster is too big. 23 is the max.
I don't think MacDonald or Bordeleau make the team.
You're forgetting Kyle Burroughs. He'll make the team almost surely.
I also expect Couture to be healthy but that's just a guess.</div></div>

Still retooling
I kind of like the Sharks RD right now with Rutta, Benning and Burroughs for where the Sharks are at in their rebuild. Fabbro plays a similar style to all three so it really doesn't make sense to go after him. That's also an overpay for him for a 2nd that will be pretty damn close to a first

Backlund and Duclair
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>I think you're right about using the retention spot strategically to facilitate trades. But, I would rather watch Labanc and Hoffman walk as UFAs because their current AAVs make them untradable if it means we can get as close to a 1st rounder for either Duclair or Barabanov with retention. I think one high draft pick in the 20s-30s is worth more than a few mid-range picks that we could get by retaining on Labanc or Hoffman and trading Duclair/Barabanov at their actual cap hit.</div></div>
yeah I agree, if retention is the difference between a 2nd and a 1st then yeah, better to do that than just get a 4th or something for Labanc/Hoffman w/ retention. I would just doubt that 1.5 in retention would make up a big difference like that.

fair, but have to use last retention spot wisely. Might make more sense on a guy like Labanc or Hoffman because they have more aav, so more retention is possible.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>V123</b></div><div>Really?? I think a 4th is fair value for him</div></div>
Why give up a young player for a 4th if he's a player you'd be thrilled to have gotten in the 4th round? Most 4th rounders never even make it to the NHL. Good contract for 2 more years + still under team control after that. He played well for NJD before getting traded to San Jose, so the Sharks are going to want to see what he can do starting fresh with us this season.

San Jose is not giving up a 2nd for Gallagher. Montreal would have to give us picks to take him. The Sharks are trying to get out of long overpay contracts, not take more on.
