Pittsburgh Penguins signed Jack Johnson (5 Years / $3,250,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>I have a feeling you'll see him in the top 4 on at least a trial basis. They likely promised him at least a shot there. Knowing how unhappy he was with his reduced role in Columbus, I can't see him choosing to sign with someone who wasn't offering that chance.</div></div>
Rutherford wants us to roll 3 d pairs more evenly this season so he may not be getting placed in the top 4. Also, Johnson and Schultz would likely be a dumpster fire together. Neither one of them defends particularly well. They could try him at RD with Maatta, but that wouldn't make much sense either. So the most logical spot for him would be the 3rd pairing with Oleksiak. I'm not sold on him magically becoming better here, but he should at least see easier match-ups and less d-zone starts. He may even be able to help our transition game. He does pretty well with possession entries and exits and he was way above average each of the past two years with his transition passing. However, I would have preferred a 1 year prove it deal.

I really like this signing, especially when compared to Jvr.

Fixing the mess
Reaves wasn't a good fit for Pittsburgh before, and they're not gonna take him now that he counts for 2.775 million against the cap. You'd have to retain 50% and probably sweeten the deal more for them to take him back.

If JT Signs With the Sharks
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CheechYou</b></div><div>. Hertl for Kessel straight up is a laughable suggestion. LAUGHABLE.</div></div>
If someone offered me Kessel for Hertl straight up, I'd jump on that deal. Kessel is a significantly more skilled player. Kessel has had better traditional offensive statistics (goals, assists, and points) every season that they each have been in the league. Over the past 2 seasons, Kessel has had a better game score, p/60, better possession entries, and possession exits. Hertl does a better job with shot suppression, shot generation, and corsi(mainly because Phil doesn't bother with defense).

2018-2019: Defensemen
Jack Johnson has been pretty poor throughout his career. The sample size is pretty big at this point too because he's played for 11 years. When he's one the ice, his opposition shoots more and scores more than his own team. To be fair, he receives heavy d-zone starts and plays against high quality players. I think the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

2018-2019: Defensemen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>IceDragon</b></div><div>If Letang did not screw around during the regular season and the postseason, the Penguins would not have to worry about defensemen.[/quo
Letang's was not the sole reason we got eliminated. He contributed to it, but he was hardly the main problem. The main problem was that Malkin, Kessel, Simon, Hags, Dumo, ZAR, and Brassard all got hurt or played injured so they weren't as effective. We had very little offense outside of Sid and Jake. Letang still played pretty well this year. He had a couple memorable gaffs, but still played at an incredibly high level. Our lack of depth on defense was exposed this year. Our top 4 was solid still pretty solid but our bottom pairing was not. We actually had to break up Oleksiak/Ruhwedel because they were an atrocity to defense late in the Philly series. We weren't nearly as deep this year as we were in the prior 2 seasons. Schultz was our 7th d against san jose. The group of Daley, Cole, and Hainsey from cup 2 was significantly better than Oleksiak, Ruhwedel, and Hunwick. We supposedly have signed Jack Johnson to make us a little bit deeper(although I'm not sold on him being the solution) and we should look to upgrade our 7th d from Ruhwedel too.</div></div>

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Bryan Rust (4 Years / $3,500,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>awesome</b></div><div>and if he either regresses or just doesn't continue to improve it might be the new "sheary contract" where everyone is trying to get rid of him</div></div>
Not everyone here thinks we should get rid of Sheary. I wouldn't be interested in giving him away simply to clear cap space. He had 27 even strength points. The only contract I'd really look to move is hunwick. Having said that, Rutherford does seem to overpay by about 500k per year in contracts(Sheary, Rust, Schultz, Hornqvist, Dumo) and that cap space does add up. When you add in a bad signing (hunwick), you get 4.75 million that could have been used on getting the extra defense/goal scoring Rutherford is looking for.

Officials ...
I think part of the problem if that the officiating crews vary from game to game. Different refs call the game differently and this often makes the officiating from one game to the next feel disjointed. Also, I would like to see improvements in how the officials are coached to make calls. Many poor calls are made because the official positioned himself to have a poor view of play like in game 6 of the finals last year. In addition, they need to quit letting the situation within a game can definitely affect what is or is not called. An infraction in OT or late in regulation should be called as often as it is called in the 1st period of play.

(BOS / FLA) 2018 3rd round pick - for Vatrano
I like it a little bit more from a Florida perspective. It's a change of scenery for a young forward who has played quite a bit at the nhl level enough he didn't factor in much this year. Most 3rd round picks don't ever make it to the nhl. Having said that, it was wise of boston to get something for a player before the deadline where they could use that pick rather than risk losing him for nothing in Fa or on waivers should they make a big move at the deadline.

Sheary
Penguins wouldn't part with Sheary for what would be their 9th best d-man on a terrible contract. Orpik has negative value because you'd have to pay us in 1sts or really good prospects to get us to take back that contract and Chiasson would not be a good fit here either.

Pits-Van Blockbuster
That is a terrible deal for Pittsburgh. It also makes no sense for them either. You should be paying us in 1st round picks just to take back Sutter and that disaster of a contract. Tanev is injured quite often (including right now) so there would be very little benefit in acquiring him either.

That's a really steep price to pay for a wing. I would rather use those assets on a center like brassard who we could get more games out of.

Like your grabner trade. Colorado may not be inclined to get hunwick, but a 3rd sounds right for him. I don't think they'd be giving us barberio for a 5th either. I'd prefer to keep rowney as an emergency center; also montreal probably wouldn't want him.

A 2nd or 3rd alone would land you plekanic with 50% retention. That's simply too much to give up for grabner. If you didn't overpay for grabner and plekanic, there also wouldn't be a need to add leivo who the leafs probably wouldn't trade to the penguins.

Hunwick trade is about right, but sheary is a better player than ryan. Also, I'd prefer to not give up simon in a potential deal for grabner (maybe a guy like dea or blueger instead).

It doesn't make sense from a vancouver perspective. They're not a contender and are probably looking to get younger. Hunwick is probably worth a 3rd rounder without giving back a 4th too. I'm not really a fan of adding brassard.

Sheary's Return. Let Me Know What You Think
I think your selling the penguins short a lot here. Sheary is has term at a great rate for his production and Maroon is a ufa. You don't need to retain salary on hunwick either. I also wouldn't trade for cullen. He declining quite a bit and Minnesota is currently in a playoff spot so it wouldn't make sense for them anyway.

(DET / PHI) - 2018 cond. 4th & 2019 cond. 3rd for Mrázek (50% retained)
This is pretty good from a detroit perspective; they got a couple of picks that could improve for a goalie they may have decided to not qualify (simply due to the high salary and his role on the team).

Fair?
It would be the percent out of 3.5 million instead of 5 million (so if the retain 50%, they only pay 1.75 instead of 2.5 million). I think the offer for brassard is a bit high and hunwick is a bit low.
