That's what I think will happen. Friedman reported the Penguins are doing a "soft rebuild", but I don't really buy that. To me it sounded from what he said like they're just going for the rebuild and trying to frame it differently. I agree that you have to either go all in or rebuild, being in the middle helps no one. But at this point I think the quickest way to winning a cup again is a full rebuild.

Agree 100% on Eller. I think he'd be a good 2C with Geno at wing, but 3C would definitely be a concern. I wonder how a Guentzel for Marner trade would work and what would have to be added. I really think we need to do something big like that if we want to contend. Maybe we can sneak into playoffs as currently constructed, but we will need a major move to become a contender. I don't think anyone should be completely off limits besides Crosby Malkin Letang and Peterson (I think D would collapse without him). I also think we need Poulin and Puljujuvari up in second half. They would for sure be upgrades for our bottom 6 at this point.

What are your thoughts on running Malkin-Eller-Rakell line with Eller as the center? I feel like moving Geno to wing is the best option at this point. Geno with a defensive center I think is perfect and will allow him to thrive in the last couple years of trying to contend. It would definitely require us to get a 3C at deadline, but I like that strategy. Also am not opposed to moving any of our wings in a hockey trade if I'm being honest. If we are trying to contend probably not Guentzel, but I wouldn't rule it out if there's a huge name like Marner or Zegras available. I feel like Dubas will either fully sell or make tons of moves at deadline to reshape the team. He really retooled Toronto at the deadline last year when they were in a way better position than us.

I also hate the idea. 100%. But 9.5 x 8 is just too much for us when we're 1-2 years away from a rebuild and I don't think it makes sense for either side. Guentzel could sign with a rebuilding team who will be good in 1-2 years, then he can be on a contender for the remainder of the deal. As opposed to signing with us, contending for 1 maybe 2 years if were lucky, then being on a bottom team for the rest of his career. That's where I am unsure because obviously I want him back, but I just don't know if it makes sense for either side

I see what your saying for sure. I think it's going to come down whether Dubas thinks Guentzel will re-sign. It's hard for me to imagine that they don't have a sense of that right now. I know Guentzel's agent said that they want to know what the plan is for the team for the next 8 or so years and he mentioned that tough decisions might have to be made. That made me think it's up in the air, but there is definitely a possibility he doesn't re-sign. The tough part is do you want to sign with a bad team that will be good in 1-2 years and likely for the rest of the contract, or re-sign with a good team that will be the opposite, good for 1-2 years and bad for the rest.

As far as what would happen if we traded him there is definitely a chance the team would collapse. He is probably our second best player right now and it would be tough to overcome. I also think the key to this teams success is playing smart, structured hockey. The past few weeks that's been the difference. When were playing that way I think we are really tough to beat regardless of who is in the lineup. The style we play has been a bigger problem to me than anything lineup related. This team is prone to bad habits and falling back into the unorganized way where we give up tons of odd man rushes. If we can limit that and keep doing what we're doing then I think we have a shot to make some noise in playoffs.

As far as what I actually think will happen I don't know. This is a new regime and this is a position the team hasn't been in for a while. Having a big player due for a huge raise but knowing there's only 1-2 more years left of contending. I think it depends how the next few weeks go. Tonight will be a huge test. Vancouver is very fast and has an insane offense. If we can slow the game down and limit their chances I think that's a great sign going forward. If we can't that concerns me that we will struggle to maintain our structure against those types of teams in a 7 game series.

Here's how I see it. I think it is unlikely Guentzel re-signs this offseason. I have no clue what he's thinking or his plans are, but we are about 1-2 years away from a rebuild, which makes us not a great destination to sign a long term contract. We also will not be able to afford to pay him as much as he'd get on the market. If we did we would not have the money to make many other improvements to the team in the offseason. If Guentzel is not looking like he's going to re-sign it would be pretty bad to lose him for nothing in free agency. A long term contract I don't think would make sense for either side, but Guentzel is due for a payday and deserves more than a bridge deal imo. That makes he think he likely won't return. In that case I think we almost have to trade him. I don't think that necessarily means we'd sell. But if we are offered a 1st, an A prospect, and a decent roster player that would help us to still be competitive this year then I think we make that trade.
