What if Bedard Wanted to Come Home
Chicago rolled out the red carpet for him and he's pretty much worshiped there. He'll have the ability to write his own check when his contract is up unlike in Vancouver where his cap hit would hinder his ability to maximize his value. He's getting the C in Chicago sooner than he would in Vancouver too. Also being in the third largest market, he has a better chance of making more in marketing. Aside from "coming home" it's more advantageous for him to stay in Chicago.

Because he’s a priority, Montour is probably the odd man out. Rhino as well if he thinks he’s worth more the Matt T.

Beyond the value he doesn’t fit the sharks needs and isn’t the type of player Grier is looking for.

The retention is brutal. 6 more years after this one. They have also used all 3 retention spots.

Honestly, I think it's a fair deal.
SJS gets a RD, which is what they're weakest at plus a pick.
Tampa fills a scoring need and their back end is stacked. Thompson likely wasn't going to make it there.

Kakko doesn't have that value. Even if you add a 1st from the Rangers, it still wouldn't get it done.

Cost to dump Goody is a 1st plus. 3 more years AFTER this at nearly 4 mil is a terrible contract that no one is taking on unless it's a haul. So add a a 1st to that and the Sharks maybe consider

(ANA/PHI) - Drysdale, 2025 2nd (ANA) for Gauthier
Drysdale probably still upset about the injury/contract shenanigans at the end of last season. Disgruntled player for disgruntled player. Makes sense.
I like this trade for Anaheim better than I do for Philly, so they "win," but if the player tells you he doesn't want to play there, what are you gonna do?

(ANA/PHI) - Drysdale, 2025 2nd (ANA) for Gauthier
Drysdale is already an established NHL player while Gauthier is not.
Gauthier hasn't even been signed to his ELC yet.
The 2nd round pick should be going the other way.
Philadelphia wins.

I would think San Jose would be adamant for a first rounder. Nonetheless, it is a decent trade. Good for Boston, and still provides a goalie and futures for San Jose.

Yes we have Eklund but he’s a rookie and leaning on Hertl and without Hertl his numbers drop. and yea Hertl is 36 when this deal ends but he’s in great shape and his game is not predicated on speed and those type of players tend to last a little longer (see Pavelski & Giroux)</div></div>
It could also be a 3 team trade where Ullmark goes else where and San Jose receives futures/ prospects.
I also don’t believe Hertl sets back the rebuild that much really. You still have vlasics contract+ all the burns and karlsson retention holding you back.
Won’t be a while 4+ years before San Jose starts looking quite solid again. By then they will have smith/ eklund/ bourdeleau/ Bystedt and probably couture still to fill those center positions + probably celebrini and other top prospects they will draft between now and 2026

Blackwood Follow-Up
San Jose is going to be really reluctant to trade Ferraro. Along with Hertl he's the heart of the team, and culture matters in a rebuild. Trading Ferraro is going to have an outsized effect on morale/culture in the room and that's bad for developing guys like Eklund, Zetterlund, Emberson etc. Its one thing to trade aging vets like Burns and Karlsson, but Ferraro is only 25. It would send a bad message to the rest of the guys in the locker room in my opinion, so you really only do it for a massive overpayment. A 2nd, and the nebulous value of "what we might get" for Pesce isn't going to be enough I think. Especially not with Blackwood thrown in as well.

I have to think Zadorov screwed Calgary by asking out right now. The market isn’t hot in december and team could have had much more at the deadline.
