It comes down to 2OA, Sharangovich or Holtz as a key piece.</div></div>
That’s a reasonable ask, I just don’t see the Devils pulling the trigger.

Even if Hughes played the full year, it would have been 3rd. He played no first unit PP time in Van and as a result ended up with 3 powerplay points on the season.
If the devils don’t want him that’s fine, he’s not for sale for some bits and pieces anyways.
Enjoy your mediocre team. At least there are prospects to read about every other games after a loss</div></div>
Deep breath buddy, I’m pretty sure we are in agreement the trade doesn’t make sense from both sides given the uncertainty of the players trajectories.
Regarding your mediocre team comment, the devils have been far from mediocre for a long time and don’t worry a cup will finally come to Vancouver after the Sedin twins have a set or two of twins of their own

Bahahaha, I’ll quote even strength relative Corsi next time. Just the same as your logic on Smith not being or currently projecting as a top 4D, Garland hasn’t yet proved he is a first line player on a playoff caliber team to warrant the return you are expecting.
Next to no chance the devils deplete their prospect depth by sending Smith, Walsh, Foote and a pick for Garland anyway and we’ll see how the players progress or regress in the next year or two.

Not sure what is more tone deaf, Devil fans trading a lot of assets for a player who hasn’t scored more than 22 goals or 52 points in a year or Canuck fans expecting a kings ransom for a player who hasn’t scored more than 22 goals or 52 points in a year….

Husso is the answer
The changes I’d make are:
swap Nishushkin over Burakovsky
swap Blackwood (as I doubt he holds much value) with a prospect or pick
Hold off signing Husso and use cap for a vet 3C

Potential 2022-2023 Devils Lineup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>I think the forwards look about right. Maybe we keep Johnsson and someone else moves to bench.
There is also the chance, if his recovery is not going well, that we don't re-sign Miles Wood (small chance, but there is a chance).
Defense also looks right except Mukhamadullin will play 2022-23 in KHL. They have already announced his loan.
Goaltending is ?? with Bernier's health. May have Daws or Schmid as backup.</div></div>

Regarding the forwards, I’d prioritize keeping Johnsson to fill in the top 9, dump Zacha, Bastian and Boqvist and sign a top LW/RW such that Hughes and Nico have at sufficient talent around them they both can’t play with Bratt.
On defense, if Smith picks it back up, pulling whomever is looks best from Utica makes sense. If he doesn’t, likely will need to sign someone to be the fifth defensemen until two of Luke, Muk, Walsh, Smith emerge.
Need a 1b goaltender. Hopefully Bernier recovers and the simplest solution is to ride the hot goalie as Bernier and Blackwood have their ups and downs.
Also, at a minimum replace Recchi

No reason to rush Holtz into first line minutes in his first year. Everyone also seems to be overlooking Johnsson, even though he disappeared some games, his underlying numbers were solid. With a little better puck luck, he’ll bounce back to score 20+ this year especially if he plays with Jack. To me 3C is the biggest need but if we get Saad
Saad-Hughes-Johnsson
Zacha-Nico-Bratt
Sharangovich-Kuokkanen-Holtz

Quick Message to all Devils Fans
In short if the devils cannot attract free agents in the top couple of tiers, they aren’t going anywhere. The organizations which compete are able to build through the draft, make strategic trades and attract free agents. If you eliminate even one of the three, you become prone to the risks of each: the draft is far from a sure thing and takes years, trades are difficult to win on a consistent basis to build a team and FA require paying a premium and eliminate cap flexibility.
IMO, the devils need to do the following over the next 2-3 year to get out of their current cycle.
1) Continue to build through the draft, given the state of their roster, trading top 20 picks is a bad idea. Even with the influx of talent coming, it’s hard to say the devils will have the top 9 / top 4 talent to win.
2) Use trades to trim their surplus of young, unproven players for middle 6 and second pair players which address the gaps in the roster. The devils have drafted an extra 10 players on the last 5 drafts and all of them will develop to be nhlers on winning teams.
3) Leverage cap space to pay a slight premium for shorter term contracts with FA starting next year. It is easier to get players to stay when you are winning and to maintain flexibility go long term with the players that fit.

Zajac serves no purpose with how McLeod is playing, but doubt he’ll be a healthy scratch much this year. Gusev needs a consistent line mate not named Zajac.

Fully healthy Roster
Zajac isn’t going to be taken out of the line up unless he needs a recovery day. The starting 19 looks right and you’d expect Sharangovich, Bastian and Kulikov to be candidates to take a night off to give Kuokkanen, Maltese and Butcher some time.
Will be interesting what the top six looks like

Use the cap
6 is probably a little rich, make it high enough to sign him to a 2 year deal so if you trade him it isn’t a straight rental and with 50% retention it isn’t a burden on either team’s cap

Fitzy Fleeces and Offer Sheets
If offersheet is for longer than 5 years you divide the value by 5. So it counts as 7.2M requiring the higher comp.

Have to start somewhere
Obviously offer sheets require both sides to agree player and team. If Krug leaves Boston has plenty of space, if he stays and/or Chara comes back they may not be able to pay him 4.3+ a year. Much less of flexibility for Van and TB which are more likely options anyway
