Why do I bother to engage with people. You know this isn't at all what I'm saying yet you oversimplify my point and twist my words.
I guess we'll see if Simmonds is the player you think he is. Right now I'm not seeing it, despite his 3 points

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Onslaught77</b></div><div>Simmonds has 1 goal 2 assists so yeah, that's pretty effective especially on this team where he's only had under 9 minutes other than one game where he had almost 11. Your hate on simmonds is silly and irrational. Ho-sang isn't even signed with the team so he doesn't have a contract. What they should do IMO is this.</div></div>
I don't care how many points Simmonds has for the same reason I don't care how many points Matthews has. We know what Matthews brings to the team and what sort of player he is, and I think we both know Simmonds averaging 0.5 ppg over 6 games while playing under 9 minutes isn't indicative of how great or effective he is.
And I'm not even high on Ho-Sang. I guess what I didn't mention is I want to see changes in the lineup, period. And who better to call-up then someone who showed potential and is desperate for an NHL job.

Spezza won't be as effective playing consistent 2nd line minutes.
Ritchie and Simmonds have to go. I get they bring grit and character to the team but they are not effective on the ice at all. Reminds me of the Babcock days when Martin was finally scratched for Kapanen and it seemed to change the entire make-up of the team. With Keefe I didn't think we'd have this problem of stubbornly putting in ineffective slow veterans whose only merit for making the team was because they could throw a check or drop the gloves. If anything have Simmonds be the extra forward so he's still travelling with the team.
I'd also like to see Kase in the top 6, and Ho-Sang with Tavares and Bunting for a game or 2. Put somewhere there who is desperate to play and remain with the team, and demote Marner until he realizes making the pretty play and setting up Matthews isn't priority #1

Team Canada - let the roast begin
I think Stone is too slow and not agile enough to compliment McDavid, nor is he a bona fide goal scorer. I think Point is a lock for the team and if he isn't a center I think he'd fit nicely on McDavid's wing.
Don't think Seguin makes the team, and if Marner is on the team I'd want him playing a top-6 offensive role rather than 4th line RW.
Crosby is not playing wing... Swap him with Bergeron
I think Scheifele makes the team in some capacity,
Pretty sure the D man will stick to their natural side, meaning Pietrangelo is one of the locks on the right. Also, Theodore

Not a fan at all. Imagine being able to roll out the 3 best centers in the world on one team, and you put them on the same line? Spreading out talent at center brings out the best in the players around them. Should be: McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Point. In that order.

Not advocating he should be there but he's at least in the conversation. If he had any supporting cast I'm sure he'd be regarded as highly as Pietrangelo, if not more so.

Simmonds plays on the 3rd or 4th line, Robertson on 2nd or 3rd. Mikheyev and Barabanov over Malgin and Boyd. Engvall plays 4C.
Lehtonen over Sandin, Dermott over Bogosian. Very curious to see how their D will be setup, though. Sandin and Bogosian definitely deserve a look.

No Tavares
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Nope. If you just do the math, you will find the combo of Brown (lets say he signs for 3.3 mil now), Kapanen and Kadri, this add to 11 mil, which just so happens to be exactly what Tavares is payed. Sure, it take out roster spot, so it lessens 1.5 mil, but nonetheless, that is how much needs to be cleared to get under the cap. It is nowhere close to enough to sign Pietro. People greatly overexaderate how much Tavares costs.</div></div>
I did do the math. If Matthews et la. took 1-1.5M less; Johnsson and Kapanen took 0.2M less, you could sign Pietrangelo at 9, and Brodie at 5, with room to spare.
Tavares inflated the price of Toronto's RFAs. You're gonna see the same thing with Panarin in NY once Zibanejad, LaFreniere, and Kaako are due raises and have Panarin as a comparable at 11.5

No Tavares
If Tavares never signs, I think Matthews accepts 10M; Nylander doesn't hold out for 7.5; and Marner would be more willing to accept ~8.5M. Leafs would have likely saved 3-4.5M on top of the 11M for Tavares. No doubt contracts for Johnsson and Kapanen would have been less too, and they could have kept Brown
Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Kadri - Brown
Johnsson - Nylander - Kapanen
Barabanov - Engvall/Spezza - Simmonds
Money saved by not signing Tavares + the difference between Kerfoot and Brown's contract, maybe they could afford both Pietrangelo and Brodie. Maybe.
Rielly - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Brodie
Dermott - Lehtonen/Holl
MAYBE.

I hope the answer is no. Hamilton can get you a lot more than a 31yo goalie on an expiring contract and an unproven top 6 winger. And quality > quantity. You've offered AHLers or fringe NHLers in exchange for proven NHLers...

Changes I'd make:
McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Couturier as the 4 centers. The first 3 could very well be the best 3 centers in the world, while Couturier is the reigning selke winner.
Point over Giroux, Bergeron over Scheifele
Stamkos - McDavid - Point
Tavares - MacKinnon - Marner
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Huberdeau/O'Reilly - Couturier - Stone
On defense you have 5 RHD.
Left side: Theodore, Reilly, Chabot/Giordano;
Right side: Makar, Hamilton, Pietrangelo

You talk about good PP guys, how about Khaira for the Oilers. PP demon. if I was Kapanen I would ask for a trade to get off of the 3rd line of Toronto. He is going to be there forever. Sucks to be him. By the way I am a huge Kapanen fan and would love him on the oilers.</div></div>
Kapanen is not worth a first and that’s all! There is other guys that can kill penalties, and is really fast, and scores goals. And I would rather not trade a first round pick to get Kapanen, and if I want to trade it I will for a better player.[/quote]
I'm not trying to change your guys' personal opinion. My argument is teams would absolutely give up a 1st to acquire him. If Barclay Goodrow gets SJ a 1st when he's 27 and his career high is 24 points then how the hell does Kapanen not?

Chaisson scored 22 goals as a 28 year old, whereas his career high before that was 13. I don't think you can compare the two
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Nhl_oilers</b></div><div>Wow HAHAHA. Of course I love hockey. Do you even pay attention to any other player besides the leafs. It doesn’t matter if you are 22 or not. There are different players I would rather spend that first on (even if I had to give more than that first round pick) to get instead of overpaying on Kapanen. By the way it doesn’t matter if you were picked in the first round either.</div></div>
It does matter if you're 22. He'll still be improving for the next 3-4 years and is under team control. It's also odd you think a former 1st round pick who is living up to the potential of a 1st round pick, can't fetch a 1st round pick - especially considering teams who give up 1st rounders are teams wanting to win immediately. So what would a team rather have: a future 1st round pick who can't help you for the next 2,3,4 years - or is even a guarantee to make the NHL - or a former 1st round pick who is almost in their prime, has the potential to score 20+ goals, kills penalties, has game-changing speed, and is on a favorable contract?

People keep putting McDavid and MacK together but imagine being able to roll 3 lines, each anchored by either Crosby, McDavid, or MacKinnon. If Canada's down, or need a spark, or right after a PK, put them together. Otherwise I think the team benefits with one of these 3 guys on the ice at almost all times.

A comment like this is evidence you haven't seen this guy play. Did you just look up the leaf's line combinations? He's had less of a role since Johnsson came back, which I think is a mistake, but anyone who's watched him knows he offers way more value than a 4th liner

McDavid and MacKinnon anchoring their own lines would be more beneficial to the team than having them on the same line
Crosby, Marchand, and Bergeron will be ages 34, 33, and 36 in 2022. I can see them all making the team but as 3rd or 4th liners
Swap Hall to his natural side
Point and Barzal 2 years from now both make the starting roster. Point could make the starting roster today.

Eichel is 6 years younger and has a higher ceiling with a lower cap hit. Buffalo would be stupid to offer this deal; Toronto will be stupid to reject it.
Either way, it never happens because Botterill isn't THAT stupid (right?), and Tavares wouldn't waive his NMC

One goal he was a bit at fault nothing too horrible he had his stick so far up inside his gut when he probably should have knocked him down yeah it was a bad bank pass but that stuff happens. Plenty of time to recover. One was a miscue by Dermott the other was an unlucky bounce off his skate and then gauthier bails onto his ass. Bad luck. It happens Leafs certainly deserved the win but it doesn’t work out all the time.</div></div>
Ceci has a lot of bad luck, then. His terrible play is supported by his underlying numbers while playing sheltered minutes on a 3rd pairing while making 4.5M. How do people still see the positives in this guy?

Not sure about comments above, but as a leafs fan I'd accept. Johnsson has 6 goals in 32 games playing almost exclusively next to Matthews and Nylander. He's 25 - still young - but he's probably already in his prime. We're already deep on the wings and it would clear cap space while solidifying the backup position and is under team control for the next 4 years

You can not be serious. The odds of a 2nd round pick being a regular in the NHL is around 25%, and that's likely 3 or 4 years down the road. On any other team Georgiev is already solid backup and vying for the #1 spot, while also being under team control for the next 4 years...
Even if it is just potential, the value of that potential is worth way more than a 2nd round pick.
