This is how you destroy a team.

Barrie is not that great for what the Lightning need. He’s not overly physical and is more offense-oriented than defense-oriented. We score plenty, but we could benefit from a more defensive player to pair with Hedman. Is Barrie really more effective in that role than Sergachev?

Nylander looked awful after he finally signed. He had a lot of bad luck, but getting close to scoring without actually doing it is worthless. He’ll be much better off after training camp, of course, but by how much is anyone’s guess, and with that kind of contract, I don’t want to be guessing. Paired with elite players, he’s typically around a 60 point player. He played near a 40 point pace this season. He’s not big or physical. He’s barely better than Tyler Johnson, but is on a worse contract.

Stamkos scored over 40 goals and nearly 100 points this season as a #2C, is emerging as a solid playmaker as well as an elite shooter, and is on a long-term contract with an extremely good cap hit for his production. He’s the team captain and the face of the franchise. He has way too high a marketing value for ownership to let us touch him, and is too valuable a player for management to want to. Remember what happened last time he missed a season? Despite Kucherov’s breakout season, Hedman putting up his best ever offensive numbers, and players like Killorn setting career highs, we couldn’t even get into the playoffs. If we make this move, we’re no longer Cup contenders.

Schenn and Witkowski are gritty and physical players. We don’t have the cap for players like Ferland, so Killorn is going to have to suffice as our main power forward. And yet we’ve been to the SCF before and the ECF several times. If Hedman had been in full form, we probably would have had another deep run. Virtually every speed-based team (TB, CGY, TOR, VGK, PIT, WPG) got out in the first round, and I can guarantee almost all of these teams will have some bad things to say about officiating. People dismiss it as a bad excuse, but the referees’ moronic “playoff” attitude completely destroyed us; you’re not actually allowed to shove small players around and throw players down to take pucks, and that kind of nonsense degrades the quality of the game and player safety. Unless Bettman just tells the owners to shut up and fall in line, there’s no way the NHL allows playing styles like those of CBJ and STL to persist in the playoffs ever again.

Are we not betting favorites? Don’t you think career sports betters know what they’re doing? You need luck, but we have the team to win Cups over the next few years, and four lousy games doesn’t disprove that. Moving Stamkos is completely insane.
