Philadelphia Flyers signed Samuel Morin (1 Year / $750,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rebecca</b></div><div>True (tho he did go 11th in 2013). That said, he’s still with the team that drafted him. The only other 2013 1st rounders still with their drafted teams (tho this may soon change) are:
MacKinnon - COL (#1)
Barkov - FLA (#2)
Monahan - CGY (#6)
Nurse - EDM (#7)
Morin - PHI (#11)
Morrissey - WPG (#13)
Pulock - NYI (#15)
Dickinson - DAL (#29)
Usually, by 8 years, 1st rounders are either:
a) established with the team that drafted them (a la Barkov)
b) established on another team, after bringing in a haul in a trade (a la Seth Jones)
c) no longer on NHL contract/in Europe (a la
Kerby Rychal)
Morin is the exception and sorta feels like the 40-year-old-virgin version of a hockey prospect.</div></div>
Dickinson was traded a couple days ago

Things don’t look too good for Morin. Former 13th overall pick and he still hasn’t had a salary as high as his entry-level deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rebecca</b></div><div>Waddell strategy: “gimme ALL the picks”

Granted they had a lot of picks to start with, but since the March trade deadline MTL has sloughed off 5 2021 draft picks, in exchange for players and for future draft capital.</div></div>
I'd argue it's because he wants draft picks for the draft in Montreal. For the past 3 years we've had tons of picks, then the draft has been held online and then Bergevin moved picks to the next year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rebecca</b></div><div>This is all true. But also to consider:
- taking up a spot towards the 50 contract cap
- blocking development opportunities for young players
- yeah, k that’s about it.
I think it’s a fine deal. Everyone looking for their own personal Carter Verhaeghe. Gonna have to sign a few more to increase the odds I think.</div></div>
Everyone treats the 50-man list like some sort of demon and yet only two teams hit that cap this year. If an NHL GM has done his job, there will be un-renewed contracts at the end of the season. Or he can trade those same expiring assets for picks.
We as fans tend to take a very surface-level approach to how we view the AHL (and even the ECHL). Reality is, most AHL rosters have almost 30 names rotating in and out on a nightly basis, especially if the parent club doesn't have complete ownership of their AHL/ECHL teams. Players can sometimes be assigned to other AHL teams depending on the circumstance. Teams are starting to trust European systems more than they used to and foreign prospects are often left to develop in equivalent (or better) leagues than the AHL.
Unless the contract in question is a Michael Haley type, there is never a bad contract below that $1.05M mark. The trick is to at least sign actual hockey players. Not every team is there yet, but the league is trending in that direction.

I think they needed to get someone as a solid starter. Neither Daccord nor Gus looked ready for full time NHL duty let alone starter duty. They should have taken the offer Vegas had out there of giving a 2nd to dump Fleury. I think with an improved D next year Murray can bounce back but I don't think he'll be the guy when the Sens are at their peak.

Hello! This thread is a season preview and meant to create discussion. If interested please have a read I'd love to get your feedback. Also feel free to ping anyone else who might have a constructive opinion as the idea is to get as many fan basses as possible.
Don't worry about the mass ping, <strong>this is a one time thing</strong> and won't be like MitchMarnerElite pinging half the site 3 times a week to ask about trading a conditional 7th for an AHLer.

We're comparing high 1st rounders (5th + 15th) to a late 4th rounder (124th).
And this is just their D+1 seasons ... it's not like a lot of time has gone by.
Truly and utterly shocking results ... I am literally speechless.</div></div>
One was 20 years old and two of them were 18 in there first year of college, i would say caufield's and turcotte's numbers were more impressive, thats not to take away from what abruzzese was able to do though, still impressive

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mikhail Abramov (3 Years / $809,444 AAV)
Dubas has been implementing a no performance bonus policy, with the incentive to the player that it will be easier to burn off a year of your ELC quicker (see Sandin & Robertson). I think he's taking it a step further with the lower than usual AAV since the leafs are so tight to the cap. I'm pretty sure that if Abramov's contract slides after next season, his cap hit would be 785,000.

Everyone's having a bad year in SJ from a plus minus standpoint. The fact of the matter is the Sharks are much better defensively when he's on the ice vs. when he's not. There are stats out there to support that.

So Leafs basically stood pat, while the team with a stack of defensemen (despite the injuries) added more.
I'm confused.
Also, this is the same Carolina team that embarrassed us just the other night with solid defensive play and desire. And they're only getting stronger on D...
Their D core is ridiculous: Slavin, Pesce, Edmundson, van Riemsdyk, Gardiner, Skjei, Hamilton, Vatanen, Fleury.
On further thought about the Leafs, I'm kind of glad they didn't make big moves. These players shouldn't be let off the hook that easy.

I didn't mind the Coleman deal, he is a better player, but this is a bit much considering what they already have done.
I know this is also about replacing whoever it is they need to trade in the offseason, but chucking away two firsts in this draft is a lot for 3rd line players.
Also, Tampa is currently has just over $76M spent for next season, with Cirelli and Cernak as well as some depth pieces to sign. Obviously they plan to move out some salary, but who?
Palat should get a decent return except he is the guy they would most like to keep out of their seconadary players, and has a full NTC which will hurt his value. Johnson, Gourde and Kilorn wouldn't necessarily be easy to move if you could negotiate with all 31 teams, but with full NTCs I can't see how they move them without adding sweetners. I am not saying they have negative value per se, but when you can only deal with a few teams they are willing to accept a trade to, I can't see that GM knowing Tampa is in a tough spot just doign them a favour.
