Which Vegas can do with their current roster, and probably with another deadline acquisition. Right now they can ice a 20 man roster that takes up 77M-81M.
Last year the lineup of
Barbashev Eichel Marchessault
Howden Stephenson Stone
Smith Karlsson Amadio
Carrier Roy Kolesar
Martinez Pietrangelo
McNabb Theodore
Hague Whitecloud
Hill
Thompson
would have been cap compliant too, I believe.

Toffoli and Monahan are such underrated additions. Make their teamates better. Don't cheat on the ice. Good guys for the locker room.
I would be so happy for WPG fans if one or both would resign.
Best TDL moves so far IMO (Colorado might end up better)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ricochetii</b></div><div>My first two thoughts:
1. Dubas tried to pressure teams into better offers by putting an early deadline on a deal and it backfired, reducing the competition.
2. Are GMs finally regaining their sanity and pushing back against rental prices?
With so many teams going all in the last couple of seasons and multiple GMs being faced with serious pick/prospect shortages, maybe the analysts are getting through with data about just how effective deadline additions are and what acceptable risk is with respect to cost/benefit.
Bad negotiating, buyer's market, or paradigm shift?</div></div>
I think you're on to something there.
Carolina is always on the progressive side of roster management and it was my main concern in Pittsburgh working on a deal with them - Carolina was always going to win.
This feels like an Eric Tulsky deal with Don Waddell's name on it.

Not getting a guaranteed 1st is absolutely terrible considering this alleged bidding war. Unless these prospects are the second coming of McJesus, I don't get it. Not an expert but I don't believe any of those are their best.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pompadour_de_Armstrong</b></div><div>My old person hot-take will continue to be that the issue is a relatively new fascination and is overrated. Mostly a comfort level from guys who never played off hand side. It does make a difference on how you will approach a play (and especially on the PP), but no-one capable of playing top-four minutes should be unable to shift to the other side. It just takes some adjustment to get comfortable and retrain the brain a bit. Wouldn't be too keen on asking a young guy still getting confidence at this level to make changes to his game at the same time or ask a fringe defenseman to change his game around, but most guys should be able to get comfortable with a bit of time.
Doesn't mean guys won't have preferences, or that some guys won't play better on one side or the other, or that you shouldn't try to line up with those preferences in mind. Just think it's a relatively new coaching obsession to grab a dedicated number of L/R defensemen as opposed to grabbing the best four defensemen you can ice and try to find the right mix and partners for them regardless of handedness.</div></div>
I think the speed of the game has required much quicker reactions and therefore the extra half-second of pivoting to get an off-hand player to prime passing/shooting position it does matter. Playing a puck with pressure, I do think it matters. Would love to see some analysis on it.

Tampa is last team I would think enclined to retain salary for a low pick. What am I missing here!?
Edit.: Ok, a lot of LTIR money, but since when TB doesn't use every cent of their capspace to contend?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Saskleaf</b></div><div>Apparently it’s only a 3rd and a 4th
Like what the heck are you doing Ottawa, that might be the single worst return for a rental at the deadline I’ve ever seen</div></div>
Tarasenko has fired 4 agents in 24 months.
He is waiving his ntc for a future contract.
As predicted, he was super cheap to any team who would do that.
I’d predict he’s a panther for 3-4 more years.
Think of it like this:
It’s kinda hard to sign tarasenko if signing him means you have to pay a first round pick. Nobody would do that.
He had to be cheap to get what he wanted. Thus fully using the full ntc. If he’d only waive for 1 team, it’s a take it or leave it situation. Even if there’s no deal in Florida, he gets to be on the absolute premium team to show himself off, but he’d have that too at in Vegas, the lightning, Dallas, Edmonton - but if he waives for them all his price goes up, and it’s harder to decided to go down the path with him.
This is from 2 weeks ago from me, easier to read:
“He forced a full no trade during the off-season. He’s going to want term to waive.
If any team approaches with an extension, then that’s the only team he would waive for. His agents will have spoken with literally every viable team just this last off season, twice. Two seperate agents.
If a player only waives for one team, their value is the lowest possible.“
As an endnote that I edited it:
The senators had to agree to this when they signed him or it’s tampering times infinity.

I’d be curious to see what you expect as a return in a legitimate offer for Reinbacher.</div></div>
Don’t get me wrong, i like Mittlestadt but he isn’t a top tier forward. He would be a nice addition to Mtl roster that for sure but not at the cost of a futur top righthanded defenseman. Buffalo didn’t even received a prospect of that caliber in the Eichel trade.
A late first and Logan Mailloux or Justin Barron would be much more a return to expect. Historically if you look at similar profile player in a similar position then Mittlestadt this is the return. Fiala deal is probably a great start to what the return would look like.
At the time of the trade Faber was a good prospect but he wasn’t a high profile prospect with the 19th overall pick. I think that this is what to expect in a trade for Mittlestadt.
As for Reinbacher, 5th overall pick aren’t traded a year after being traded. Unless you are talking about the top tier players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>.
But do you all think that one of Crosby, Malkin, or Letang get moved around?
I really have a hard time seeing Sid being okay with a trade, and I doubt anything they’d do with Malkin would move the needle: he’s fine, but at such a late career stage. Letang has so much term left. I could see Letang fill a role on a contender perhaps, but again I don’t know how that trade works when his term takes him to his 40 year old season. In my mind, moving Malkin or Letang probably costs you in immediate performance while also not providing any substantial return.
So my mind circles back around to Crosby. If he decided a move was an outcome, even at his age the penguins should expect at least one very notable, high shelf piece in the return.
I wonder if that happens, because it would be frustrating giving your all, trying to contend, but being haunted by the realities of time and previous choices. It would also be frustrating to know your gm is building for the future and no help was coming.
I’d have to guess if Crosby moved it would be to a Canadian market. Or Vegas, lol.
It would be nuts if Tavares’ replacement was Crosby, but dubas would def take a big chunk of torontos futures and a big piece in the deal.</div></div>
Not a Penguins fan or direct follower to have any special insight. but I don't see any of them leaving, other than for retirement. They have their cups and their commitment to the Penguins has been remarkably high and I think the "stay together" legacy is too strong.
I think the Karlsson deal was misguided attempt at trying to double down/hedge against Letang having to carry too much. None of their contracts are easy to take on for any contender without a really complicated (and expensive) deal.
Guentzel, Jarry, Graves I do wonder about either at TDL or off-season.
Seriously wonder about an off-season move of Karlsson back to Ottawa as being possible. They desperately need RHD. Not sure if the feelers were too hurt though.
With Yager, Pickering, and Blomqvist (and eventually Murashov) they have few but high quality prospects; just not sure if their timeline will even be with this core.
The advantage they have is that free agents will want to come play with these guys, but they need an entire new second line, a true "shut down/matchup blueline pair", and a system that can actually work with two high powered RHD demanding a lot of puck time (Sharks bombed when they did this too).
They say they need to get "younger" which is OK but even their AHL team is kind of old; I guess they just need to play faster. Some speedy/skilled wingers and make Geno's a 3rd line grit/multi-tool line; which means a hunt for a quality 2C (how many teams are in that picture?)

This is an excellent signing for the Canucks. Pettersson is the face of the franchise, and seeing him buy in for the next 8 years is super exciting. 11.6m is the perfect price for Petey, I am so excited to see this team in the coming years. Such a bright future in Vancouver, and they can now just focus on what lies ahead now that there is some certainty with their core.
Curious to see if the Canucks will be more trigger happy at the TDL now, obviously they already went out and got Lindholm, but now they know their budget for next year. This extension couldn't have come at a better time. So happy for Vancouver and the third Sedin brother
