Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 6 - Nearly Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Yeah, I wouldn't mind players like Tanev, DeMelo, Walker, Roy, Pesce. on short term contracts, but so many fans think they are worth of six years? C'mon their effectiveness to their contract is probably three years max. Unfortunately, Dubas thought it was such a good idea to trade so many futures for one playoff round win. Then it same routine every year, the Leafs just gotta scramble to find aging UFAs during the summer. By his record in Calgary, I never understood why MLSE thought he was a good hire. But it seems to be a Leaf trend this century, look at the list of GMs, medicore at best.</div></div>
I think any GM needs to send out futures to improve the immediate when you are a contender. Unfortunately it didn't work out. Had he not made any moves the mob would have went nuts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>I liked keeping Sammy in as it seems that after what ever that first period was he and the team for the final 39 mins had it together
The 6 Dman is gonna be interesting but rn I would say

Edmundson-Liligren
Benoit/Gio-McCabe
Cause man idk if u want Brodie going against FLA as their forcheck to me is gonna **** em over</div></div>
This is what you are going to get with Sammy, inconsistent play. How well will it go for us if Sammy struggles in a period vs Florida and we are down 4-1? Battling back against Detroit is not the same thing as Florida. You can't afford these loss of focus moments you get with Sammy. That 4th goal is why I favor Woll so much. I get the allure of his acrobatic saves Sammy makes, it's exciting but when he has his inevitable lapse of focus or just gets a little unsettled it costs you so much. Woll when he's healthy and in mid season form, which I think he's closer to than anyone wants to believe, he just is so settled and poised. He may not be able to make the highlight real saves Sammy does (he certainly can and has done so, just not as frequent) but he makes harder saves look easier back being so square and big in the net. I would take that 100% of the time.
If Sammy ever figured it all out and never had a mental lapse again, he'd be an unreal goalie. But to think he has at this stage of his career is delusional. Case in point his last 2 starts. This is inevitable with Sammy. When does it happen next? It's going to, we don't know but it will happen. And then is it a bad period? Game? Months? We have seen any an all of these time frames. Giving him the keys is just wreckless.

I am now at Woll being the game 1 goalie. 2 bad games in a row (although 2nd half of yesterday was ok) for Sammy created this.
Maybe
FLA = Sammy
TBL = Woll.</div></div>
Sammy is exactly what we have seen. He's a peaks and valley player. When he's at his best he makes highlight real saves and keeps you in games you have no business being in. But when he's off his game, he flops all over the place, loses his angles and isn't even an NHL goalie. What version of Sammy are you going to get? Woll is poised and consistent. He's the future and should be given the chance to prove it. Throwing a guy who might be unreal one game and then get scored on from the side board on a bank shot to throw away a win is a mistake.

I guess the current Sammy form is better? It's amazing how so many people have forgotten what happened only a few months ago. Sammy is going to revert back to the bad goalie we saw earlier. Back to back stinkers and it compounds. Woll is and should be the guy. He doesn't have as much experience but we know what we are going to get with Sammy and even 2 bad games in a playoff round and you are in a major hole. Sammy is way too risky.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oneX</b></div><div>So...my comments were specifically about the playoffs. I realize both of these guys have stolen games in the regular season but the playoffs are a different story.
Anyway I think it's a recipe for disaster to count on the goalies to play like Vasi, Hellebyuck and Shesterkin do.
The forwards and D-core just need to be better. This team has the game breakers, it just needs to play lock down defense in their end.
Also forgot that Jones can play one of the Florida/Tampa games and that makes sense and allows the other goalies to focus on the team they likely play in game 1.</div></div>
I think that is very much on Keefe's shoulders. He needs to adjust his game plan to account for how things change in the playoffs and he never does. Woll was absolutely terrific vs Florida last year by the way. Sammy isn't TO's long term answer and Woll is.

As of right now, for me Sammy is the game 1 starter but of course the leash is going to be short.
None of these goalies have shown they can steal games or series so...my expectations for goaltending is to keep the team in the game, nothing more, nothing less.</div></div>
I would say that is very untrue. Both Sammy and Woll can steal games, both have done so this season on multiple occasions. What's more important those is for our goalies to not lose us games. Samsonov definitely does that at times. And has a history of it. This season he had a month straight of blowing games. Woll's problem was health related. Got unlucky with a sprained ankle and has worked himself back into game shape. He should be the starter for sure. So long as the leafs play well in front of Woll he's very unlikely to hurt us. Likely wins us some games. Sammy can do that as well but we know by now that he's also going to have moments where he loses focus and it will cost us. I just wouldn't take the risk. He flops all over the place making athletic saves but sometimes it burns him and it's harder to play with a guy like vs a poised positional guy. Start Woll

Again Sammy's the starter whether you like it or not and as fans we got to cheer for Sammy rather than be debbie doubter and wish he and the team fails by spouting nonsense. He won them a round vs. a team who went to SCF 3 times in a row when others like Freddie and Campbell couldnt and has been on a tear as of late going 18-3-1 since Jan 31 after a horrific start to the season.
In the end saying he's gonna fail and this and that and all these excuses before playoffs even start is the wrong way to go about it especially for a team whose fans and management want them to go on a run
As said a million times Woll's hopefully got a bright future but as of now he aint it and even next season I would not trust him to become the guy yet. He has not earned it or shown it consistently enough. Still has a lot of work to do
End of story, done.</div></div>
It's immensely insane to call Woll inconsistent but give Sammy a pass. The only thing Sammy is 100% consistent at is giving up bad goals and sometimes floundering all together. Just look at his career playoff numbers. Even vs Tampa he had 2 really bad games. Vs Florida his numbers looked better but terrible goals killed him. He's not trust worthy. Never has been and this season is an exclamation point on that. It's nuts how everyone just ignores that.

In the end Woll has been struggling recently and should be no where near the starting job rn especially for the playoffs. Had an okay game tonight but still shaky at times and considering all factors his place is the backup rn.
You go with the goalie whose been hot as of late and its been Samsonov

Last year, earlier this season, his entire career to this point.....none of it matters because a hot streak between his collapses is all you see eh? Woll is the future and he is playing good and better with each game. He's also better and more consistent than Samsonov. More poised, better positionally and doesn't really get rattled like Samsonov does. Sammy isn't leading the team to a cup, Woll is the guy they hope does that for years to come. That is entirely the point. Woll is never bad. Even when he's "struggling". He's looking good tonight. Always under control and in position. Florida in the first round is going to be low scoring games and Sammy will let in some stinkers and when TO loses 2-1 with Sammy letting in a bad one.
