Assuming Dahlin at $10M and Power at the rumored bridge of $6M, adding Pesce at your $6.875M extension to Samuelsson's $4.28M totals $27.2M - which for 4 players would amount to 31.1% of an assumed $87.5M cap (if the rumored jump goes up $4M for 2024-25, when all 3 extensions kick in). Add in 3 more forwards (Skinner, Thompson and Cozens) for another $23.2M on top of that and they'd have 57.6% of their cap in 2024-25 committed to 7 players - and only $37.1M left for 16 other players. Krebs and Jokiharju each seem destined to be extended, albeit for shorter tems, next summer.
Other teams may top-load their cap usage on 5-6 players but that approach doesn't sync up with what Adams keeps saying about allowing space. He also seemed to shoot down the scenario pretty clearly of trading for players on expiring contracts (i.e. Pesce, Hanifin and Hellebuyck amongst the media speculated rumors) during his press conference on July 1st.

Alright alright alright
Adams is not going to devote $26M of his cap - more than 1/4 of even what the cap is projected to go up to - on 4 defensemen, which is what would occur if Dahlin gets the predicted $10M and Power the predicted $6-7M on top of the $6M Pesce is rumored to want and the $4M Samuelsson gets.
I also don't believe Adams is going to give up his 1st rounder in any trade.

Along with the 3 valid reasons listed above, the Sabres' core is being built around Thompson and Cozens as their top 2 centers - adding Lindholm would force either down the lineup or to play out of position on the wing.

Mangiapappi
I can't follow the logic of any of the moves, which appear to be interconnected:
- If the Sabres were able to get Calgary to agree to that package of Mangiapane, a 1st and the Flames best prospect in Pelletier, all for a middling AHL prospect like Cederqvist, Adams would run and hide with the steal he got while Conroy would get shredded by the Flames fans and media.
- However, if the Sabres were then miraculously able to brainwash Briere by flipping that package for Konecny, why on earth would the Sabres send him to Calgary?

I think Bryson will be the first and only casualty - and the Sabres will first try to trade him for any kind of return. Failing that, they'll waive him in hopes he gets claimed. If no one claims him, I think the Sabres relegate him to 3rd pairing minutes in Rochester to make sure their prospects like Johnson and Novikov get 1st pairing minutes.
My hunch is that the Sabres will carry only 1 extra forwards and 2 extra defensemen, which will be Stillman and Lyubushkin. Either of them may get dealt by the deadline if the Sabres decide they won't resign them in free agency after their contracts expire.

Hilarious when an ACGM reveals their logic for dumping a particular player off their favorite team while assuming other teams don't share the same logic for why they wouldn't want that player.
For the very reasons cited, Buffalo has no need to take on an aging player in decline at a position where they already made their additions earlier this summer.

I wouldn't rule out the Sabres' interest in DeSmith because of his connection with Karmanos but I don't see them trading for him unless they run into injury situation with their NHL and AHL goalies. When everyone's healthy, odds are that Comrie and DeSmith are destined for the AHL.

Considering that both Lyubushkin's and Olofsson's cap hits expire next summer while Gibson's continues for another 3 years thereafter, the majority of the financial burden falls on Buffalo, not Anaheim - and they have to give up a player and draft pick on top of assuming that burden. How is that fair from anyone other than a Ducks' fan's perspective?
Likewise, as written, the conditions for the 3rd becoming a 1st is if the Sabres make the ECF - which could happen through no impact of Gibson's whatsoever. Another lopsided advantage for the Ducks in such a proposal.
And you think the Sabres' fan responses are from another reality?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>I agree with a lot of this. I expect Clifton to make a much bigger difference than johnson, but having Samuelsson healthy and power a year older should help. Plus likely less time for jokiharju. Be interesting to see if/when granato starts to tell the players that it's time to play defense. Assuming the plan was to let these guys gain confidence by playing an offensive/open game, then gradually introduce more structure with an eye towards winning.
I think comrie and upl are below average, but holy hell our zone was a Chinese fire drill in front of them. Having said that, I expect that comrie and upl will look better, but I'm totally fine with moving on for something that's a significant improvement, provided the cost is reasonable. <strong>Not real interested in Gibson, especially at 6m</strong>.</div></div>
Gibson at 50% retained or $3.2M seems palatable, albeit a little high for a backup. Not that it'd be the decision-maker in accepting the trade but at least the Sabres wouldn't have to conduct an annual search for a backup with experience behind Levi for the next 4 seasons. It's hard to know how much treadware Gibson has left with the amount of shots he's faced for so long but then again, Anderson played until 41 after stints in Ottawa and Florida where he was under siege on bad teams.
Assuming his workload could be lightened and thereby he avoids prolonged injuries, I'm lukewarm to Gibson as an option - but any prime prospects or 1st rounders going to Anaheim without significant retention from them is a non-starter IMO. The Ducks could accept table scraps in return for Gibson and I'd still want nothing to do with the full $6.4Mx4 contract.

There is no way Adams even considers giving up a 1st round pick in a Gibson deal unless the Ducks are retaining at least 40% of his cap hit.
Even with the 1st off the table and that mediocre return of players going to Anaheim, I still don't think the Sabres would take on the full value of Gibson's contract - especially when the Ducks have the most cap room in the league.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AntiAnalytics</b></div><div>At this point, idk that he’s a better mentor than Comrie would be for Levi</div></div>
On this point, you couldn't be more wrong. In terms of experience as a starter with different teams, Allen has a huge edge over Comrie - Allen has 395 games under his belt and a Cup ring from the Blues. Comrie has played 47 total games in the NHL, all as a backup on losing teams. In terms of a mentor who can share experiences of playoff pressure as the starter but who has now accepted a backup role in recent years, Allen would seem to be a great resource for Levi to learn from. Comrie hasn't lived the life of an NHL starter on a winning team or faced the associated pressures that come with it - and his congenial personality won't teach Levi anything.
I'd be willing to bet that, if the Sabres bring in another goalie from the outside, it will be primarily someone with age and experience to help teach and guide Levi more than it will be to replace him as the starter. That's why all of the Hellebuyck nonsense never made sense - any team he plays for will want him as the unquestioned starter for several years.

You may want to listen to the Adams and Granato interviews, where they explained how they view the "hits" statistic and its value - they each pointed out that taking a hit to make a play or getting body position to win a puck battle (neither of which isn't statistically measured) are just as important, if not moreso, than taking an opponent out against the boards or defusing an oncoming rush.

I get the giddiness that most Penguin fans feel, being seduced by the headlining name and thinking they'll outscore their way to the Cup because of the resumes of their top 4 players now but that will fade when the reality sinks in that they still have an aging roster, thin on depth with questionable goaltending amidst a strong Eastern conference field. The Pens didn't make it last season because of their depth issues behind the big 3 - and other than perhaps Boston, there doesn't appear to be any teams in the East that made the playoffs last season likely to drop off much - on top of other teams like Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa expected to be in the race. Adding Karlsson changes none of that - and to read one of the Penguin beat writers boast that Karlsson's presence compensating for when Crosby and Malkin go through scoring droughts is laughable.

I'd agree - but it will be curious to see how the 3 goalies look during training camp and the first few weeks of the season. Adams has to be cognizant of the situation and implications if UPL and/or Comrie don't impress enough or instill a sense of confidence behind Levi. Some of the initial analysis from Montreal's media suggest that DeSmith could either be insurance as their 3rd goalie, get waived to shed his salary or outperform Allen and take over the backup role. Allen's experience, cap hit and remaining term do fit the criteria Adams likes for support of his core players - and, at least in terms of age/experience, Allen offers more in the "mentor" role to Levi than other veterans that could be available.

No argument there - even Adams has admitted that his management and coaching staff don't always see eye to eye on things and he welcomes those disagreements for perspective. We've heard him often describe how he wants his analytics team to convince him of things that he doesn't think match up with the eye test. That said, I don't think Adams will trade for or add a player to the roster and force Granato to deal with making it work without first talking to Granato and hearing whatever concerns or issues the coach may have with an acquisition Adams wants to pursue.

I think the Sabres would ask for more retention on Gibson - they're not going to pay $4.4M for the next 4 years, especially when it's highly likely that Gibson would quickly go from a 1B insurance plan behind Levi in the upcoming season into a full-time backup the final 3 seasons thereafter (2 of which will overlap a likely extension in the $3M-5M range for Levi after his ELC expires).
