You may want to listen to the Adams and Granato interviews, where they explained how they view the "hits" statistic and its value - they each pointed out that taking a hit to make a play or getting body position to win a puck battle (neither of which isn't statistically measured) are just as important, if not moreso, than taking an opponent out against the boards or defusing an oncoming rush.

After we win the cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>The_Lanny</b></div><div>It’s going to be really funny when Pittsburgh misses the playoffs again.</div></div>
I get the giddiness that most Penguin fans feel, being seduced by the headlining name and thinking they'll outscore their way to the Cup because of the resumes of their top 4 players now but that will fade when the reality sinks in that they still have an aging roster, thin on depth with questionable goaltending amidst a strong Eastern conference field. The Pens didn't make it last season because of their depth issues behind the big 3 - and other than perhaps Boston, there doesn't appear to be any teams in the East that made the playoffs last season likely to drop off much - on top of other teams like Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa expected to be in the race. Adding Karlsson changes none of that - and to read one of the Penguin beat writers boast that Karlsson's presence compensating for when Crosby and Malkin go through scoring droughts is laughable.

Let's just be glad that this proposal, along with all of the others posted today in the wake of the Karlsson trade, didn't resort to the tired and illogical pattern we saw from Penguin fans all offseason trying to unload Petry to Buffalo. That was a tiresome theory that, despite never making any sense for Buffalo, kept getting pitched over and over.

I'd agree - but it will be curious to see how the 3 goalies look during training camp and the first few weeks of the season. Adams has to be cognizant of the situation and implications if UPL and/or Comrie don't impress enough or instill a sense of confidence behind Levi. Some of the initial analysis from Montreal's media suggest that DeSmith could either be insurance as their 3rd goalie, get waived to shed his salary or outperform Allen and take over the backup role. Allen's experience, cap hit and remaining term do fit the criteria Adams likes for support of his core players - and, at least in terms of age/experience, Allen offers more in the "mentor" role to Levi than other veterans that could be available.

No argument there - even Adams has admitted that his management and coaching staff don't always see eye to eye on things and he welcomes those disagreements for perspective. We've heard him often describe how he wants his analytics team to convince him of things that he doesn't think match up with the eye test. That said, I don't think Adams will trade for or add a player to the roster and force Granato to deal with making it work without first talking to Granato and hearing whatever concerns or issues the coach may have with an acquisition Adams wants to pursue.

As each man has acknowledged in different interviews, they each respect and value the opinions and recommendations of the other.
That said, Adams said after the TDL how Granato "pounded the table" in lobbying for the Greenway trade and Granato also told after the UFA signings how he identified Johnson and Clifton as guys he wanted Adams to get. The fact that Adams added the players Granato wanted shows that they both want and value the same things in players.

I think the Sabres would ask for more retention on Gibson - they're not going to pay $4.4M for the next 4 years, especially when it's highly likely that Gibson would quickly go from a 1B insurance plan behind Levi in the upcoming season into a full-time backup the final 3 seasons thereafter (2 of which will overlap a likely extension in the $3M-5M range for Levi after his ELC expires).

Agree - and it also seems that the Sabres like to have Lyubushkin, Stillman and Jokiharju all on contracts that expire at the end of the coming season because it keeps a spot open for Ryan Johnson if he ends up being NHL-ready for 2024-25 as most think he will.

When Kevyn became GM he made absolutely terrible free agency decisions.
I may not have posted my thoughts on this site at the time of his signings but I let them known to other people. For example:
TBH, I cannot recall all of his terrible signings but the most egregious was letting Larsson walk and signing Eakin.
Larsson would have signed for less and actually wanted to stay in Buffalo.
He traded Montour for a third.
He traded Hall for a second and over paid him by double when he did sign him.
He let Ullmark walk.
When Karmanos joined the team, suddenly we get Levi and a first for Reinhart, a first and second for Ristolainen, a boat load for Eichel and start making smart UFA signings.
Well that is my belief and my evidence.</div></div>
Yet Adams allowed Pittsburgh to interview both Karmanos and Ventura.........

If the Canadiens were to pitch such a trade to Buffalo, it seems like asking for Leinonen would be more of a smokescreen in order to really land the more coveted prospect in Ostlund in a package.

Maybe, maybe not - with Coyotes flip-flopping between a scorched earth-type rebuild and simultaneously dropping hints that they want to remain "competitive", who really knows which players they keep versus dump. There's also the other side of the equation to consider as to whether players will tire of the losing and ask to be traded. Keller's camp was obviously concerned about the instability of where the franchise will play. Also, the Coyotes re-signed Ingram to a 3 year extension so a Vejmelka/Ingram veteran duo doesn't really fit the rebuild mode as much as the "competitive" mode. Vejmelka's career stats aren't that much better than UPL's albeit he has more NHL experience as a starter and is accustomed to playing behind bad defenses.
When there was the prospect that the Sabres might add a veteran to back up Levi, I was 100% promoting the idea of Vejmelka because his age, cap hit and experience seemed to be a better fit than the Hellebuyck/Gibson/Hart theories floating around fan sites but I've resigned myself to accept Adams is sticking with his goalies for now and see how the season goes with a Levi-UPL tandem. A trade for Vejmelka - or any other goalie - could still happen in the future if the circumstances and events of the season start reinforcing the urgency and need to do so.

So the Sabres give up 7 players plus a 2nd rounder just to land Swayman and Dillon in the 3-way with Winnipeg and Boston? I don't see it happening nor do I think it's worth the pieces they're giving up just for Swayman. Dillon is a marginal defenseman and not much of an upgrade, if at all, over Jokiharju.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BUF10</b></div><div>They didn’t trade a 2nd for him to be a bottom 6 player or healthy scratch.</div></div>
We'll see. Greenway may see time on any of the 4 lines during the season - it's pretty clear in everything Granato has said that he intends to give ample opportunities in different situations / combinations to try and "unlock" that potential he thinks Greenway has. Considering the up and down performances Greenway gave, it seems likely that he may be inconsistent and force Granato to shift him up and down the lines and ice time allotments.
In the same vein, they didn't push hard to insist on Krebs as the key piece of the Eichel trade just to keep him perpetually on the 4th line. Last season's time there was clearly with the intent of developing Krebs' defensive awareness and consistency of effort - but his potential as an offensive catalyst is only going to be reached with at least consistent time in the top 9, likely centering the 3rd line rather than Jost.
We'll see whether or not Olofsson sticks around beyond training camp - he may likely be the insurance policy / fallback option and stay only if all of the prospects (Kulich, Savoie, Rousek or another Amerk) show they're not ready for full-time duty in Quinn's spot. Odds are that at least one of them have a strong camp and make a case for deserving an NHL spot, which would then make Olofsson expendable.
Although the pairings could vary in any combination (including 2 LHD or 2 RHD as partners), I think the top 6 defensemen you have listed in the top 3 pairings are the ones they'll go with. I expect they'll keep 8 defensemen with Stillman and Lyubushkin as the extras.
Bryson is clearly a spare part - whether he has any trade value whatsoever or would be claimed on waivers if demoted is anyone's guess. I don't think it's an automatic that, if he clears waivers, the Sabres would want him to take a roster spot in Rochester at the expense of either Johnson or Novikov not getting top 4 ice time. His cap hit is small enough that a buyout isn't much worse other than its multi-year impact than the buried amount they'd pay.

If the Sabres add any forward from the outside, it seems more plausible that it would be a depth forward to serve as insurance and the 13th forward (like they did with Hinostroza when they weren't sure if either Peterka or Quinn would become regulars last fall).

I don't follow the logic - the Sabres are claiming the additions of Clifton and Johnson, through their experience and the depth they'll add, will automatically help their goaltending. If they were to also add Pesce to further strengthen their defense, why would it then make sense to rent Hellebuyck (or worse, extend him)?
It's all moot - neither Pesce nor Hellebuyck seem likely to be moved in the offseason. If their teams can't find acceptable trades or extend either player on their own, both seem destined to play the season out and be trade deadline candidates.

For all the skeptics thinking he'll struggle in his rookie season, there were enough signs last season on top of his collegiate and WJC performances for the optimists to think he is up to the task. On paper, it may seem like a gamble by Adams but no one knows for sure until the games begin and we see what happens.
