Really depends on how the remainder of the season goes and the playoffs. Where he's at now, I would think someone offers $5mil, if he regains his early season form and goes on a run in the playoffs he could easily get 6+. Once again, based on how the rest of the season goes, I think the best comparison would be Markstrom a couple years ago who got $6x6.

They'd be more likely to try running Skinner (23) a bit more as he has potential as well and wouldn't cost assets to try. The Oilers don't exactly play sound defense so no reason to think Samsonov figures it out in Edmonton. They're more likely to go chasing a veteran for a rental.

I think there'd be some interest in Halak from the Oilers, maybe more so a 3rd though if Koskinen isn't going the other way.
No interest in Hunt though, already have a blueline full of "D" that can't defend.

I don't see the Oilers have interest in Samsonov. The Oilers are in the same situation as the caps where they need an upgrade in net, Samsonov is likely just more of the same.

Offseason Flat Cap
Don't get me wrong, love JPG, and 3C is a need on Edmonton, but they just can't have another high priced forward with the shape the D and G is in. Oilers would be much more interested in Varlamov assuming he isn't blocking it with his NTC.

Georgiev has worse stats than Koskinen and has had his sv% decline every year. Why would the Oilers give a 1st to downgrade the goaltending?

small rebuild
I might be in the minority here but I would do something like this from the Oilers side to get a true starter with 2.5 years to go at a decent cap hit. The only name I wouldn't be ok with is Bouchard but would throw in another 1st or Borgault in his place.

Would definitely do this from the Oilers perspective. Price is reasonable enough for a rental goalie.

Leafs - DAL EDM CBJ
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HollywoodHudon</b></div><div>Love how so many people here say things like "Everyone declines" - but nobody ever says WHY!
Leafs take on the LTIRs - the fact half of them are goalies is irrelevant - just coincidence.
How do the Leafs lose the DAL trade? The Leafs add a top 4 RD in Klingberg who has Stanley Cup experience to replace Holl. Engvall is a bottom 6 forward, Kiviranta is too but is cheaper and with term, the Bishop dump cancels out the Ritchie dump - Robertson is the "kicker" for DAL losing out on the Klingberg/Holl and Kiviranta/Engvall swaps and the retention on Klingberg's salary.
How do the Leafs lose the CBJ trade? Laine is the top 6 LW the Leafs are in need of + Domi can play anywhere in the lineup and Korpisalo > Koskinen - The picks are compensation for the salary retentions.
How do the Oilers lose the Mrazek trade? Upgrade their G (Mrazek > Koskinen) and dump 2 dead weight LTIR contracts too - The Leafs do this trade in order to do the CBJ trade as I am SURE Mrazek would have CBJ as one of his 10 teams on his NTC's "no trade list". - The 1st from EDM to TOR is comp for taking on the 2 LTIR contracts and risk with Klefbom and Smith, plus the downgrade TOR takes at G from Mrazek to Koskinen.</div></div>
The Oilers for sure lose the trade. They're now out their 1st with a Mrazek/Skinner tandem. The Oilers aren't in a position where they need to move the Klefbom contract, they can let it sit on LTIR for one more season. Mrazek and Smith are both injury prone but Mrazek has more cost and term. The Koskinen contract runs it's course this year. Also, Smith is due to return next game (Skinner has been sent back to the minors).

Rust has 32 points in 24 games and the Penguins are in a playoff position. Why on earth would you trade him rather than keep him as an own rental? The only way you move him is if someone offers the moon. May as well go for it again with Crosby and co.

I think it's a bit too much from the Oilers. I think 2x 2nds and Koskinen gets Varlamov. If they want Konavolov, maybe add in a 3rd coming back to the Oilers to balance.

No team is going to retain $2.5mil on a guy for 4 years. Rarely does a team retain for more than 1-2 years. More than likely a 1st or 2x 2nds plus Koskinen gets Varlamov. Pagueau isn't on the block and has a full NTC until July.

Can't see the Oilers giving a 1st for Reimer. A 2nd and either retention on Koskinen or a sweetener to eat the salary difference for 1/4 of a season likely gets it done.

I think teams are more likely to not take Mrazek not as a dump from the perspective of trying to handcuff the Leaf's ability to keep Campbell in free agency.

Calgary doesn't do that trade without the 3rd. Still feel strongly that the conditions weren't met and the Oilers shouldn't have had to give the pick.
Another huge bust here was that Marino was traded because he refused to sign so the Oilers got a pick back instead of letting him walk for nothing.

Barrie's start to the year was abysmal but has been decent after that rough stretch. On the right team, he'd be an asset. In Edmonton, non of the LHD (or the RHD for that matter) are solid defensively except for Kris Russell (who's in and out of the line-up). Toronto did the same thing by playing him with other offensively minded dmen. If you utilize him similar to how Washington/Pittsburgh did in Justin Schultz' post Oiler days, he would be a positive asset.

TDL Expectations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>oilnate</b></div><div>I should explain I don’t want Hill, personally I wanted Wallstedt but now I would target Samsonov or wait till the off-season and kick tires on Kuemper and Jarry. But I think Oilers will make a move and while I think Jones or Holtby make more sense I think Ken wants a younger goalie like Hill or Georgiev or Korpisalo or Vanecek, but we need a starting young goalie and I’m not sold on any of them. Also you would need to give up the second cause that’s what the Sharks gave up, even then might not be enough. Georgiev makes probably the most sense but not sure Rangers will feel rushed to get rid of their backup unless he forces their hand.</div></div>
If you're Ken Holland, you have to take a run at a real starter (even though the cap situation makes it real difficult). Bringing in a Hill/Samsonov/Vanacek/Georgiev/Korpisalo just brings us back into the gamble of hoping running with a Smith/Koskinen tandem won't sewer the season. The really missed their opportunity 2 years ago when they let Calgary outbid them on Markstrom. A starting UFA goalie at the right age and willing to sign in Edmonton doesn't come around very often.

Definitely a consideration... but if you don't add another goalie you're also running the risk of having Skinner as your starter because 41 year old Smith is on IR 3/4 of the year.
