A perfect finish to the offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles777</b></div><div>He has elite underlying numbers and he should have been in the NHL much earlier. He's our PP1 QB and best offensive defenseman while being borderline elite defensively. He plays on the 2nd pairing, but he brings top line value. I personally would trade pelech before toews.
Apparently there is interest in leddy and the isles have taken calls on him recently, but worst case scenario if they buy him out it saves 4.25 mill this season. His contract is very buyout friendly. Theres also rumors the isles are close to moving boychuk, so well see if that ends up happening.
By next offseason, Bailey and varlamov will be traded/taken by Seattle. Mayfield can be traded considering wilde is about a year away.</div></div>
I would assume Mittelstadt and a top LD prospect/pick would not move the needle? I don't watch the islanders so I didn't know how critical he was to the D-core. It just seems like the Isles are coming into a hell of a cap crunch and it will be tough to keep everybody. Do you agree?

You really think he is worth that much? He has one proven year at the NHL level at the age of 26. I would also think you would want picks/prospects back for him considering you will need a ton of cap to resign Barzal/Pulock/Pelech/Beauvillier/Sorokin in the next two years. That's like $25-30m hit towards the cap. Would you let Pelech go before Toews? And how much extra cap would you get from buying out Leddy?

This is mostly to create cap space for Pietrangelo. Their top 4 D would be Theodore-Petey, Schmidt-Risto. That's pretty damn good but I'm not sure how else they get the cap to do it

So we have the expansion draft. Gardiner or Nino
We have 30 million of space right now for 21-22
We have a top 5 prospect pool that will fill in very nicely.
If push comes to shove, which it wont, we can trade Trocheck and slide Necas over.
Canes cap situation isn’t a mess or that hard to figure out. Even for us bumpkin Hurricanes fans</div></div>
I understand that the Canes don't NEED to make this deal for cap reasons. I'm more of just going off of the fact that the Canes in all honesty don't really seem to need Gardiner, so why not do this move for cap saving reasons down the line? It just doesn't seem to make sense to have Gardiner at $4 million to be on the 3rd pair when you have Fleury and Bean (who might already be better than Gardiner straight up). Am I wrong to assume that next year the defense would look like: Slavin/Hamilton, Skjei/Pesce, Gardiner/Van Reimsdyk? Bean, Fleury, and Kaski all seem more than able to take on a 3rd pair role, so why not go with the cheaper options?

How do you think you're going to eventually pay for Hamilton, Svechnikov, and a goaltender? That's roughly $25 million right there. By that time Bean should be good enough to make Gardiner look like an afterthought. That $4 million will be desperately needed. It's just a forward thinking move that benefits both sides imo

His analytics this year were really bad <a href="https://twitter.com/dabrams2021/status/1223815402901426176?s=20" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">WAR / GAR / SPAR</a></div></div>
I know he had a down year, but his defensive analytics over his career aren't terrible. It's not what he's known for, but I don't think it's a liability. Him and Joki would be perfect and he would replace Risto on our PP2

I disagree. Yes 3 years is not ideal, but you think 2 years of a Gardiner/Joki second pairing would be that bad? The point of taking on Gardiner is we let McCabe walk next year and give time for Samuelsson/Johnson to develop into Gardiner's second pairing position. The guy has good analytics and just had a down year

Smartest Moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Addison is exempt from the expansion draft as well as being the jewel from the Zucker trade, so as long as Minnesota doesn't feel a need to re-sign Jonas Brodin until after the expansion draft, their top 5 defenders are set for the near future. And you're right -- Mittelstadt would just add another forward to the list of those you'd have to expose, which by my calculation numbers two of Donato, Greenway, Hartman and Sturm.</div></div>
So would Minnesota not entertain this deal at all? From their perspective, I would think they would value Mittelstadt higher than Addison simply out of organizational need

Domi for 8th Overall
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SalamiCheese</b></div><div>This is the problem, we need a more defensive center. I would target a player like Cirelli if he is available than Domi. Even Tierney, Zacha or Kerfoot could be a solid boost. If Skinner doesn’t play again with Eichel, then he needs a more defensive playmaker center, he did well in Carolina playing with Derek Ryan and Victor Rask, and they are far from the elite, just guys who do their job well.</div></div>
I think Cirelli will be harder to get, but you are right about Skinner. In this case, Domi is a short term 2C and moves to wing when Cozens is ready to step in, by that point you would hope Cozens has reached his 2 way potential and can be that 200-foot guy. Elite 2-way Centers are hard very hard to get in NHL outside of drafting, unless you are the St. Louis Blues

You don’t think that kid can put up 50-55 points by 21-22? He was the best center coming out of the OHL. If you want to trade him for Domi that’s fine but when it looks like Erat for Forsberg people in Buffalo will likely be way more upset. You are so worried about them being good next year but it’ll take more than Domi for that to be true... most of Buffalo issue are player development or terrible trades. ROR might be the worst trade in the last 10 years</div></div>
The Sabres are most likely looking at Holtz, Lundell, Perfetti at 8 which is a meh for me as a Sabres fan compared to Domi on like with Skinner and Cozens

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>It would take Domi 2 season to do what Kucherov does in one. Hardly see how this applies to this but for googles I’ll play along. Kucherov is an elite / superstar. Domi isn’t even a top 50 player. I wouldn’t give up much more than a 2nd and a good prospect for him.
Problem is teams like Buffalo need to figure out what they are doing. Are they winning now or building for the future? If they need to win now a guy like Domi doesn’t fix that. I’d rather get a guy like Danault either trade for him for sign him next year. Players like him are better adds. Danault Is closer to an 8overall than Domi</div></div>
I disagree. They are 2nd line center away from being a playoff team. 9 years of losing and being desperate to improve are baked into this deal on the Sabres end

True, Borgen is the most intriguing defenseman we have because he is NHL ready. I want one more year of Montour because we paid such a high price for him and we would be selling low. But yes Borgen deserves a shot
