Both trades have Quantity over quality? Usually you only say that if the quantity is garbage, not like the Matt tkachuk trade. That trade includes:
Cozens (who the athletic ranked as the 6th best u23 player/prospect heading into the season), Kulich (who is averaging near a goal a game as an 19 yo in the AHL), Peterka (who looks to be breaking out, pacing for 35 goals and 60 points, building on an elite WC), as well as 2 firsts. That is a package of both quantity and quality, and I wouldn’t want the Sabres to give it up for Tkachuk

Kane for shts and giggles Campbell
Couple things:
Kane isn’t making 8 mil for playing half a season, no one would pay him that.
Sabres wouldn’t send a pick for him when we could just sign Kane to begin with.

Yes he will command decent money but cap is projected to rise next year to 87M which could soften that burden. Those two top lines would be pretty legit.
Sure I understand the logic behind that. Ive been looking at taking on 3M in salary as a top pick. Maybe some thinking adjustments needs to be made to taking on 3M in long term for a 1st.</div></div>
TK will be a UFA at the end of the 2024-2025 season. I don’t know where you’re coming up with this RFA rights nonsense.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Renegade_H</b></div><div>oops. double post. I'll just say a whole bunch of people rather stay in purgatory and keep potential good prospects than win now. Ok.</div></div>
While adding Laine and TK might be enough for Columbus to be competitive for the playoffs, it does not make them a cup contender. This trade negatively affects their team long term, without a realistic hope of a cup in the short term. Kent Johnson and a first hold more value to Columbus than TK for 2 years.
Commenting on the 3mil = 1 first value: if we assume this to be true, it is surely referred to as 3 mil of completely wasted space. If a player is making 5 mil, and is clearly not worth that much money, but is still playing at a 2 Million dollar value, does that make his cap dump cost the same as someone who’s cap cost is 5 mil but brings no on-ice value (healthy scratch/sent down)? When a player is being considered a “cap dump” you must consider the cost of replacing the player (how much that player should actually be paid). Klingberg and Foegele may be somewhat overpaid, but that doesn’t mean that their teams would pay for dumping their entire contracts, just roughly the difference between their cap hit and their actual value.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainTavares</b></div><div>I guess the current narritive on this site is that the leafs will have to pay premium draft picks to "dump salary" while other teams do not have to do the same - too predictable.
Imagine thinking any team, not just the leafs, would move a 1st and only get Nick Seeler back. With the lack of cap space league wide, non-contenders will have to take some contracts in trades.
Don't people on this site get tired of the nonsense spewed?</div></div>
At least on this post, it’s not just the leafs, OP definitely is overvaluing cap space, and making trades that favor Philly.

Bryson hasn’t played so far this season. Jokiharju has played as an okay 2nd pairing defenseman, and EJ has been a good 3rd pair guy for us, and a big part of the improved PK so far this season. Probably not interested in moving either of those two.

Sabres also wouldn’t trade for Demko with this. Casey Mittelstadt has 23 points in his last 18 games and Jokiharju is on our second pair. I doubt the Sabres would have interest in trading those two together for Demko, let alone adding a second and UPL.

I agree that the value does not make sense, but also Buffalo is not a destination that makes sense at all. They have Cozens and Thompson locked up long term, and Mittelstadt has been playing a top 6 level since halfway through last year and is an RFA after this season. In addition to that, they still have Krebs (who may not reach the top 6 level we hoped for, but still should be a reasonable 3/4C), Ostlund, and Savoie. The only center I see the Sabres adding externally in the next few years would be a 4C. Center is the strength of the Sabres roster, now and likely into the future, spending assets to improve the defense makes more sense.

With Thompson’s emergence he lost his spot on PP1 and with it the majority of his contribution. He would have some value for a team that needs a sniper for their PP as he does have a great one timer, but he has some pretty bad analytics at even strength, and shouldn’t be getting a playing team for an already defensively weak forward group (the Sabres).

While in terms of value, that package might be a slight overpay, it doesn’t make much sense for Arizona with their abundance of 2nds and thirds in the next few years.

While I agree with you that the Sabres would be foolish to send Mitts away for a 2nd round pick, I think it’s a little premature to call Mitts a 1C. That sample size is for 11 games, which isn’t statistically significant enough to show that is repeatable. Mitts also has had the tendency to heat up towards the end of his seasons (though this also has too low sample size). If you take out those 11 games, Mitts had 42 points in 71 games, which isn’t 1C material. Right now, he produces like a good 2C and I think that is what is fair to call him. Maybe he continues his late season play, but until he does, he’s not a 1C yet.
