I don't think sellers necessarily, but does Tofolli fit into their long-term plans after this? I really had the Devils battling it out at the top of the division this year. They really don't have a lot of cap space available and are 7 points out of a playoff spot. Not in rebuild mode but may as well get something for Toffoli if he doesn't factor into your long-term plans during a down year.

I went back and forth on what his value is for a while. I think he's a really good player and I felt like the price might be a bit high when I published it, but I also figured the Jets are in win now mode and that the Devils would want a bit of a haul considering they aren't actually that bad.

Replied to someone else too but I thought Schmidt was a UFA after this season. Probably wouldn't have proposed that deal if I knew he had one year left.

Shoot I'm going to be honest... I thought Schmidt was a UFA after this season lol. I would like to retract that deal then.

Jets Re-Tool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>For a rental goalie, who is asking for Vasilevskiy’s contract for extension, this is far too much for Devils. Gotta do two of the following:
1. Change Vanecek to Blackwood or Daws
2. Change Holtz to Clarke or Filmon
3. Change 1st to 2nd
Unless he is willing to sign a much shorter and cheaper extension.</div></div>
Jets say no to that. I think the reason I did Vanacek was that the Devils would have to move some money out to make Helle fit. It's a hard spot because I think any team trading a goalie of this calibre wouldn't settle for not getting good pieces in return but at the same time that's a lot of money for contenders up against the cap to move to sign someone like him (and yes, he is worth Vasilevsky money.)
I probably also should have mentioned in my notes that that trade was under the assumption that NJ makes an extension with Hellebuyck work.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WPGSK</b></div><div>Valid point, but knowing the situation a smart GM accounts for that. The Jets have to get more Western CDN guys who are okay to play in WPG.
Start from scratch by drafting for and trading for young Western CDN kids. Build the team up like you would with youth sports clubs. They start together at 18-20 and play together for years getting to know each other, etc.. etc... sub in the odd vet where required, but make it like a junior team.
Kinda following what Ottawa has done.
Chevy is not a winner, doesn't know how to win, doesn't know how to work with his liabilities and has NO PLAN.
That's it.</div></div>
I don't think Chevaldayoff is a bad GM (I wouldn't really call him a good one either though) but I do think his hands are tied. All signs are pointing to the fact they should rebuild. Everyone inside and outside of Winnipeg knows they should rebuild, so I can't think he would be that blind to what is happening on the ice. I think someone or some people above him aren't allowing him to rebuild. I don't know if Chipman and the other owners are scared the fans won't support a rebuild or if they just legitimately think they're still good enough to win, but it's definitely frustrating. I would be more likely to continue supporting them the way I have if they just came out and said "Things haven't gone well over the past five years, we ask for your patience and support while we rebuild and try to develop a Stanley Cup winning team."

I think Chevyaldayoff does have a tough job in terms of attracting players to Winnipeg but I don't think drafting Western Canadian guys is the answer. Most of those guys would rather play elsewhere too. For example, while I don't think it was publicized, I think Mark Stone had some reservations about coming to Winnipeg even though he is from here. The grass is always greener in the U.S. because even if they get lower salaries they take home a lot more because of varying tax laws. It's about more than just finding people who would be ok living here.

Agreed. To be honest I felt the Jets should have started their rebuild last offseason but Chevy and Co. seem determined to avoid that at all costs.

Yeah a lot of contenders would have to move some money to make it work with Helle which doesn't exactly make it easy. I think some of them would though.

Yeah that's the thing eh? Every fanbase has local bias and we probably all overvalue our players a bit. I think if NJ and Helle are serious about a long-term deal the Devils would have to pay up to get it done because there are probably other contenders who would make the moves necessary to lock him up. The other two are a bit of wishful thinking.

It's definitely hard to say. If NJ and Hellebuyck are serious about working out a long-term deal then I think New Jersey would have to pay a pretty big price to get him. They might believe in Schmid enough to not offer a king's ransom for Helle though but that's a risk with a young goalie who only has a small sample size.

It's tough because I feel like there are Jets fans who are like "Dach and 5th overall for Dubois" which is obviously ridiculous. Then there are Habs fans who are like "Josh Anderson and a 2nd round pick" which is also ridiculous. I have no idea what the price is but I think both fanbases need to come down a bit. Personally, if I am Kent Hughes I am not trading Dach for him. I wonder if maybe a lower-tier center like Evans or Dvorak would be the play if it was a prospect tossed in instead. So say, Evans, Kidney, 31st overall. Is that closer? It's an interesting discussion for sure! I kind of feel like Montreal will just wait but the risk with that is another team could entice him to stay. However I think that's a risk they take as they seem pretty solid at C for years to come even without PLD.

This is actually fair and in hindsight that package from Buffalo is a bit rich for one year. Scheifele, despite his faults, however, is good and can be dominant at times. He would fetch a 1st and then some. I'd bet a lot of contenders out there would pay that price. Maybe the package wouldn't be that big but he'd get a 1st for sure.

8 goals and 25 points in 64 games is not nearly as good as 15-20 goals and 50-60 points. He's slowed down quite a bit but if you put him in a good spot on the power play Blake Wheeler can still contribute offensively. He just won't be super useful 5-on-5 but likely won't hurt you if he's on the third line.

Fair enough! I guess my thought was Helle in the next 2-3 years could get them over the hump rather than waiting for Cossa to develop. But if I were the Red Wings I'd be pretty cautious to protect that outstanding prospect pool as well! Plus there's a chance Husso has a bounce-back year too.

Truthfully, I thought Cozens was a LW, which is why I identified Buffalo as a team that might need a 2C. Scheifele might still fit on the right side somewhere and did play well on PLD's wing down the stretch run.
