You ask for our most important player and you can't even spare one of your top 3 prospects or a draft pick in the next two drafts?

Sokolov was on waivers this year so you'd either get him for free or a random prospect swap.
Kastelic would probably cost a 4th or 5th.

What is Chabby worth if we keep Chych
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>That’s not how it works.
If you retain $1.2M on Chabot but then go sign say Toffoli for $5M are you essentially paying him $6.2M? No. Retained salary is retained salary. It’s not “essentially added on to another player”.</div></div>
From the Senators perspective and in this specific scenario it does, in fact, mean that.
The Sens have Chabot and Chychrun right now. They will likely trade one of them.
In your scenario they can either pay $8.7 million combined for Chychrun's salary plus Chabot's retention, or pay $8 million for Chabot's salary.
I don't see the difference between saying its essentially paying $8.7 million for Chychrun (which it is because if they trade Chychrun instead there will be no retention money at all) over saying its $7.5 million for Chychrun and $1.2 million for Chabot.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SpiderSpiderSpider28</b></div><div>Not really. Jordan Staal himself made 6AAV for about the same, if not less production in his last contract with the Hurricanes when the cap ceiling was lower. With the cap ceiling going up I guarantee you'll see players of similar stature sign for the mid 6 - mid 7 AAV range.
Hell, look at Norris' contract. Outside of 1 season he's hasn't even proved to be a 45-50 point strong defensive C and he's making nearly 8AAV long term</div></div>
And...I absolutely agree that Norris not worth his contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Chabot isn’t worth his contract. Slim chance you trade him without retaining on him. 15% is $1.2M retained, I’d think that’d be the minimum amount unless you’re taking another bad contract back and not getting any positive assets for him.</div></div>
Yes, but if you trade Chabot and retain $1.2 million then give Chychrun a $7.5 million contract, that means you're effectively paying Chychrun $8.7 million, which he is absolutely not worth.
Basically, I'd rather pay Chabot $8 million than pay Chychrun $8.7 million.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SpiderSpiderSpider28</b></div><div>Couturier hasn't been awful at all, his numbers the last 6ish weeks haven't been great but it's fairly easy to chalk that up to massive overdeployment relative to his recent injuries earlier in the season. Realistically, he's probably a 45-50 point 3C capable of putting up excellent defensive numbers longer term. He'll probably be slightly overpaid long term, but if he can be our version of Jordan Staal long term that's more than worth it. Philly definitely doesn't make this trade
Having said all of that, I still don't think this makes sense for Ottawa either. I think the potential worst case scenario for Norris is worse than it is for Couturier, but I also don't think the Senators need to make a decision on him this extreme this early on</div></div>
Paying $7.75 million for a 45-50 point defensive 3C is not a slight overpayment, that's a massive overpayment.

That's terrible for Ottawa.
Norris is good when he's healthy but if he isn't healthy he can be LTIRed forever.
Couturier has been awful when healthy and there's no way to get rid of him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Gotta think Ottawa has to be willing to retain at least 15-20% of his contract to make him moveable. So that should be the first question</div></div>
There would be zero point in retaining $2 million and then give Chychrun $7.5 million a year from now.
It makes much more sense to trade Chychrun and keep Chabot.

Why on earth would Raymond sign for $5 million? Even on a bridge deal he could easily get $7 million.

Edit: If you can imagine any competitive team offering a player that contract, they aren't signing for the same in Ottawa. Team is chaotic. Taxes are terrible. We aren't a desirable destination.</div></div>
Well, I think the going rate for him will be around $4 million so if the Sens offer $4.5 it would be more than anyone else is offering.
He also might want to play with Chabot again.

I definitely see what you're saying but in a scenario where the Sens trade away Chychrun and Brannstrom, Middleton would be perfect for the LD3 spot.

The 2024 Leafs Fall Roster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>3 years at 2.4 million is not a bad contract. Kampf is worth about 900k, so no Ottawa is not going to throw away money for no reason.
The last thing Ottawa needs is another center when they already have Stutzle, Norris, Pinto, Greig, and Kastelic.

Actually burying him in the minors would end up being cheaper than a buyout.
