That blueline is awful.
Imho, there’s no way for them to keep all 3 of Guentzel, Jarvis and Necas and still ice a competent blueline.
Also, I don’t see a world where they pay Guentzel 9M til he’s 37-38.

Kotkaniemi scratched

He can be very hot…ppg through the first 13 games this year and he played at a 60pt pace for the latter half of last season. But also very cold…pretty much since the first 13 games he’s been ice cold.
He’s still reasonably defensively responsible and decent with faceoffs, but otherwise he’s just there. Not really contributing much. He certainly has shown, in limited stretches, that he could be a very good top 9 player. He just makes too much $$$ for what he brings to the Canes and since they have Drury, who’s completely outplayed Kotkaniemi and will be much cheaper to re-sign, I think Kotkaniemi will eventually be the odd man out.

I’d be happy if they just got out of his contract clean, no retention. So were it me, I’d dump him for future considerations and slot Drury in as the 3C/J Staal eventual replacement.
However, I’m not sure the Canes would dump him so soon. He is still young enough and has shown some promise as a decent player. (You’d also have to find a team that still believed in him and was willing to take on that deal. I think he’s young enough still where that isnt yet impossible) However, their cap situation and the players with expiring deals coming this summer likely means that they need to be rid of either Kotkaniemi or Kuznetsov to re-sign/replace enough players to stay at the level they have been at. Clearing Kotkaniemi’s $4.8M makes that much easier.

Think they’d rather buy Kotkaniemi out than spend a 1st to be rid of him.
I don’t think he’d be that hard to move as long as they’d be willing to take back $$$.

Big step in 2025
I’ll say that’s not a bad offer for Necas, but the Canes will likely more so be looking for 1 quality piece vs quantity in a Necas trade scenario. Outside of Zegras, I don’t really see a comparable forward the Canes could trade Necas for 1 for 1, so if they can’t sign him, this may be the type of deal they have to settle for, with the intention of flipping the acquired futures for another player.
I’ll also mention that certain lunatic Canes’ fans may say that Suzuki would have to come back, which is absurd.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Issue is, he doesn't only give you 30 points a season. With an EXTREMELY low PDO, his underlyings still suggest he's a 40-50 point dude. That's why you CANNOT move him. He's playing at a $4.8 level, he's just not getting the production to match it. It's his first down year, and he's not even had a worse season than Staal. It makes so much more sense to keep a 23 year old with extremely promising underlying numbers than it does to dump him. It's why, like it or not, Kotkaniemi's staying here</div></div>
The first taker that doesn’t demand assets attached/retention will be his new team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>LMFAO, this is why you are the joke of Canes CapFriendly. Kotkaniemi's not going anywhere, and if you had even a basic understanding of how the Canes operate, you'd know that. This is his first non 40 point pace season in Carolina, it's his first down year, and he's been incredibly unlucky. He's got extremely strong underlying numbers, and the Canes are THE most analytically run organization in the league. He's going nowhere, like it or not. Not yet. Revisit this in 2 years before his NTC kicks in, and it might be different, but there's 0 reason to dump him right now</div></div>
There’s $4.8M reasons to dump him, and those $4.8M reasons need to be allocated elsewhere. The underlying numbers mean nothing if he’s only giving you 30pts a season at $4.8M.

Again, ignore the Canes fans saying no to dumping Kotkaniemi cheap. The Canes should jump at such an opportunity to be rid of that contract.
