Contracts matter.
Necas outscored DeBrincat this past season and is signed next season for $3M. He’ll be RFA after that.
DeBrincat has no contract and will be looking for his $9M QO or likely $8M+ on his deal.

If your team had a 70pt player signed for another season at $3M, plus yrs of RFA control after that, would you trade him for anything less than an upgrade?
Is 1yr of Scheifele an upgrade over multiple yrs of Necas? Nope

TML-New Look
The difference between Martin Necas and Marner is 28pts and $8M in cap. Granted Necas will need a new deal after next season, but he will certainly come in under $11M and certainly for longer than the 2yrs Marner has left.
Those facts alone, should mean that Necas on his own, really is not that far off from Marner in terms of valuation.
Now, asking for a #1D plus a 1st round pick on top of Necas is completely insane.

In the playoffs and regular season for that matter, for CAR goal scoring of Aho >>> whatever perceived advantages of Marner has as a player.

I would suggest getting rid of the Boston and Calgary trades and bring up somebody like Domenick Fensore to play that open defensive position.</div></div>
I like Fensore as a prospect, but he’s a long shot to even make the NHL, much less play meaningful minutes next season or even the season after. He’s going to need a lot of AHL time. Honka might be ready next year, for spot duty. But much more likely they end up with a journeyman, vet LD to pay with Chatfield.
To the OP - if Toffoli only costs that much, sign me up. Don’t see the point of the Grzyz trade, just sign a vet to league min and keep the picks. Kinda meh on PLD, would rather spend those sort of pieces for a longer term piece. pLD ain’t signing long term in Raleigh

Nope, you’re subjective opinion is not going to change mine. I’ll take the 1C who’s the better goal scorer, something the Canes need more than a soft, overpaid winger with feel good metrics
23g in 63 playoff games just slightly better than only 10 in 50

And who else does Aho have to help him? Does he have a Nylander or Matthews on his line? Seems to me he’s doing more with less and still making it further in the playoffs.
And you’ve still not given any compelling argument for justifying Aho for Marner 1-1, much less the ridiculous OP proposal.

Seems like they’re building on consistent success though, right? Isn’t that the point? Finding the right mix of players by trial and error and then unfortunately also losing, til you finally have that right mix?
I’ll take the bet the Canes are on that right path over the Leafs. Trading away 2 integral pieces of their team for a soft winger who disappears come playoff time, we’ll that’s just stupid.

Why does CAR need to change the makeup of their team? The need goal scoring, they’ll get Svechnikov back and they’ll have a ton of cap space and futures to address that. They, as a team, are much more complete than the Leafs.
Aho very likely is re-signed this summer, as discussions evidently have already started. Pesce, again likely re-signed this summer.
Even if both players do end up not re-signing, the Canes could bring in much more value by trading them separately and while still retaining the cap space to potentially replace them, something they would not have by taking on Marner’s $11M.

Why would they walk? They’re certainly not going to have more playoff success in TOR vs CAR.
Even if they did walk, the Canes would be able to recoup better assets for them in separate trades vs packaging them for a soft winger. They’d have to replace a 1C and top 4 D and by taking on Marner’s $11M, well that ain’t really possible is it?

No it’s really not.
Florida already had Barkov and Huberdeau was coming up on 30. Aho is 26 still in his prime, plays a much more important position than Marner AND he’s a better goal scorer.
So, CAR scoffs at the ask of Aho 1-1 for Marner, much less adds.
I’m not even going to get into the ridiculous ask of Pesce + a 1st on top of Aho.
Marner ain’t no Tkachuk. Another point which blows your misguided valuation out of the water was that Tkachuk came with a reasonably priced 8yr extension. Marner is on a bloated $11M deal for just 2 more years.

They’re also a 1C and arguably top pair D, integral parts of CAR’s team.
2 yrs of Marner, as a winger, holds no where close to that sort of value.
