Columbus trade is Illegal as you can only retain on 3 contracts. Doesn't matter tho since Columbus would never consider that

Columbus very quickly says no.
If you're going to trade for Laine, we can see you put him on the top line. If you think he's a top-line winger, we do too, and you'd need to pay for it. We've got no cap crunch and need top-end talent, if we don't get a haul, we just keep him and hope for a rebound.

I definitely think he's the strongest asset here, and I would not be upset to pass on this trade.
That being said, idk...you're looking at two guys with one breakout season to their resume. Difference is Chinny's was last season, Kaako's was two seasons ago. If Waddell thinks Kaako can find another gear in a different situation, and add a first and some lottery tickets to it, I could see the work on it.
Of course Chinny scores 30 goals playing with Panarin.

Yeahhhh...the only Ottawa player we'd look at moving Jiricek for is Brady or Stutzle. That's not me saying I think either are available, that's me providing context for how highly the organization values Jiricek.

Marner Stays
Columbus is basically a team of depth scorers at this point, particularly wingers. So they have no incentive to send a pick for Järnkrok.

The idea that a kid who has yet to play a single game in the NHL is "better" or "more valuable" than a 211-game veteran whose career 0.73 PPG is exactly the same as Cole Caufield's is such a blindingly uninformed homer take that it shocks the sentient.

No Marner Trade - Most Likely smaller scenarios
Columbus don't have any need for Järnkrok or Liljegren. The return for a trade package around Provorov would either have to be a stopgap 1C (long-term 2C) or, far more likely, simply draft picks.

Columbus wouldn't be interested in a deal with Jarnkork. To much log jam in the middle/bottom 6 as is to add another piece into it. More than likely we move provy for prospects/picks more towards the deadline. Unless you want to work elvis into that deal at which point we can start having some talks.

Well thought out and put together.
The 3 way swap is outside the box but I think it could potentially work well for all teams involved if Boston sees Chychrun as someone they want to pursue.

Because for most people, making crazy trades for superstar players is more important than building a winning hockey team.

New GM makes his mark
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>If you want to trade Laine at the next TDL because he didn't rebound, you will have to retain 50% of his salary and won't get anythimg in return, just lile Johansen.</div></div>
That's 1000% fine, and I don't think other teams' fans understand that we're fine with that. Retaining $4.35M against the cap (and about $4M in real money) for half a season is preferable to retaining even $2M against the cap (and a little more in real money, his salary is $9.1M) over two seasons, for both Columbus and an acquiring team.
He's not a washed-up has-been, he's a 26-year-old winger coming off a season where he took two dirty hits that ultimately knocked him out for the season. It's more likely he comes back and performs at least acceptably than not.
We could trade him for peanuts now, or trade him for peanuts later. His value will likely <em>increase </em>by TDL 2025-26 by nature of now teams can get him at 50% retained. Why not keep him and see if we can trade him for...not peanuts? You know?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>Interesting Laine Trade. I can't shake away the felling of Anderson's return to CLB is unrealistic with his m-ntc, but it is an interesting idea since money-in money-out evens out.</div></div>
Given how Anderson felt about Columbus on the way out, I'd almost guarantee we're on his NTL. Regardless, Anderson coming back should be a nonstarter for Columbus, we'll need the cap space in 2 years when Fantilli and Jiricek are up and the team's window is theoretically opening.
...
Overall, this is a short-sighted move that makes the team worse now and in the future. I don't know why Columbus would entertain it. Just keep Laine, hope for a rebound, and you're dead-set on moving him, trade him at TDL next year half-retained for a similar package without the cap dumps.
And the cherry on top: Elvis doesn't have that kind of value. We'd be lucky to retain half on him and get a single 3rd.
And the whipped cream: moving Laine because we "need an actual player in the lineup" and immediately signing Kylington to a 3-year deal is cruel, hypocritical irony.

Jackets decline. The only reason they would trade laine would be to clear up cap space to bring in another top line forward. Bringing in a huge contract like trouba defeats the purpose

Personally, I think that's short-sighted on Laine, and wouldn't make that deal. But I'm not going to complain too badly about it.
Not going to pile on the Ottawa deal, but it is a quick no from Ottawa. 4OA would need to be included, and I'm not a fan of trading Sillinger. He looks to be on a strong upward trajectory, we'd be trading him before he's even started to fully mature.
I think this is a year to make the picks, take the lumps, play the kids, and sort out who's actually a core piece. There's no rush to compete,
