Young Guys Gotta Play
Columbus's main problem is rushing young players. Young guys gotta play... in Cleveland.
Also lol at the idea of a goalie who wasn't even the team's playoff starter being traded for fourth overall. Especially considering the new GM famously undervalues goalies.

DRAFT DAY
Nevermind the value discrepancy of the trade proposed, Kent Johnson also underwent major shoulder surgery near the end of the season and will be rehabbing throughout the summer and likely into next year. Teams do not trade players while they are rehabbing after surgery unless there are major extenuating circumstances, nor do teams acquire players in such a state.

Well, one of those two forwards will be playing for his country in the Four Nations and likely the Olympics, and it ain't Huberdeau. Pretty easy to determine which side passes.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>I know it's an overwhelming mess, and I get why you feel that way. But I don't believe it. Not all of those contracts are bad, you just have to identify what or who is holding the team back and cut it out like a tumor. Fantilli and the rest of the kids are gonna be good faster than that. I think there is a recipe there for success, and sooner than you think. But, we'll have to wait and see.</div></div>
That's kind but overly optimistic. Nothing done in the rebuild pre-Fantilli matters because they've already ruined or wasted them all. Sillinger might be a 3C, Kent Johnson is a middle-six wing at best, Jiricek can't skate or defend, Corson Ceulemans is never going to make the NHL, Mateychuk is a serviceable bottom 4 LD that every team has six of, and most of them can't stay healthy enough to stay on the ice anyway. Boqvist is a bust. The Russians are complementary pieces who have no one to complement. Every other legit prospect is a tiny wing. There's no goaltending (no, Jet Greaves is not a prospect). Even Fantilli is iffy--he's just big and fast and barely missed the cutoff to be a 2022 draftee so he was the oldest one in his draft. Jesus, now that I've typed all that out, they're not even Buffalo. At least Buffalo's high picks were useful, even if not ultimately as Sabres in some cases. Turns out that Columbus managed to lose the Seth Jones trade after all.
Essentially they're starting the reuild from the same time Chicago is, with a worse collection and nothing to sell. And they're in a conference where every single other team is better in every dimension. Chicago could make the playoffs in 2026; Columbus will lose the lottery and watch Pittsburgh draft Gavin McKenna.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Garak</b></div><div>I think you underestimate your team, good sir. CBJ has a lot of great pieces. They just have a mess of mistake contracts and incompatible players to clean up. But, CBJ is WAYYY closer to contention than CHI is. A piece like Marner could help them score more, keep games closer, and get to where they should be, which is in the playoff picture. CHI would just squander half of his extension on rebuild years, at which point he will probably be in decline and his contract will become a problem.</div></div>
I guess I meant that Marner would be far more likely to agree to go to Chicago. And no, I don't think Columbus is any closer to contention than Chicago is. Columbus is a wreck of pieces that don't fit together, formerly good prospects who have been ruined by rushing them, prospects who aren't ruined yet but are still three-four years out from anything, immovable contracts on useless players, and a brand new GM whose resume is checkered at best who will need time to assess and start to undo the damage but without any of the resources that made him successful at the job in Carolina. This <em>might </em>have been an 80-point team if every single thing had gone right last year, but they will be worse this coming season. I'll be surprised if they finish ahead of anyone but San Jose. And I'm ususally the positive one in Jackets spaces.
Chicago will 100% make the playoffs before Columbus ever finishes any higher than 13th in the East. Columbus is the new Buffalo.

At least it makes like 1% more sense than sending him to Columbus. Chicago is Chicago and he'd be paired with Bedard. Columbus is... Columbus, and has no star to pair with him.

Foolishly, I thought we were past bad Marner to Columbus trades. No, a rebuilding team is not sending you their captain, top prospect, and a recent 5OA pick for a player that doesn't make the team better who will walk in a year or demand 12 million dollars a year. Nor does that player, who is Toronto born and raised and very fond of his endorsement deals and attention, waive his full NMC to be traded to a rebuilding team in a non-marquee city. This is so stupid. I am so tired of this conversation.

I won't be upset if Lindholm lands in Columbus but I won't really be thrilled, either. Especially not with a deal like that. The fit seems obvious for a year or two, but then it feels like it'd just be a boat anchor that keeps the team from taking the next step.
Dillon, however? I am the number one Dillon to Columbus advocate on this website.

Why is Columbus adding a pick? Texier and Harris are virtually equals in terms of what they bring to their position on a team. These two teams are also extremely similar in needs; can't see Columbus being interested in a depth defenseman or Montreal needing a fourth-line wing.
Carolina laughs and hangs up. They don't need futures. They need Guhle.

Nuke For Laine
I think this is a devil-you-know situation. Cannot see the Jackets, with their stable of young players and enough Russians for a starting lineup, being interested in bringing in a player with the severe problems Nuke has. Nor is there any reason to trade Laine for a different headache when there's every chance that Laine comes back just fine. Similarly, I don't think Colorado at the point where they are in their contending cycle can risk Laine not coming back, nor can they afford the cap hit. Everyone says no.

Columbus has no reason to move him. They have no cap issues. They've got a roster spot for him. If he comes back and is worth it, amazing. But there's no reason to jettison him for pennies on the dollar for funsies.

I think you probably mean "roster spot burdens" since the Hawks have no cap issues.
I don't hate Donato as a target, honestly. He managed 30 points on that dreadful Hawks team. Could be a good stabilizing veteran for the year.
AA would have no role or spot in Columbus, however. Agreed.

While I'd love to get Konecny in Columbus, that's an absurd price.
Boston laughs Waddell off the phone, then calls back to laugh at him some more.
Also lmao at the idea of Josh Bailey getting another NHL contract, let alone one with term. Don't hate signing Clutterbuck, though that's way too rich.

Chucky rumors lets have an experiment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Friendly_Cannon</b></div><div>Thank you for the feedback.
Not a bad idea to hold onto provorov but if we don’t get lindholm, which is the more likely situation, then sign a player like Matt grizz from the bruins (forget how to spell full last name). I loved the trade initially but just too many one off mistakes. He’s gotta go. Fewer minutes and better forwards to pass too will make him a great player.</div></div>
Grz is a great target, good thought. I also like Kulak for a 2/3LD spot as Mateychuk matures. Signed for two more years and Edmonton might let him go for cheap to free up the cap.

Chucky rumors lets have an experiment
This is pretty similar to a thread I did at the beginning of May.
Lindholm likely gets more. He's rumored to have an 8-year, 50+ mill offer from Van on the table, though unlikely he takes it at this point. As much as I don't love it, he's got to be the main FA target for the new regime. The fit does just seem obvious, and then in a year or two when Fantilli's ready for the big time, you have eliminated the scramble for a 2C that recent contenders have had to do.
If the third is in there, I probably add one more low-level piece to the Columbus side along with KJ (injury issues, after all) and the 4OA. Someone in the tweener range, maybe even Ceulemans since they seem to be keen on RHD.
Hold onto Provorov til the deadline. Plenty of depth to move out. Both New Jersey and Florida dearly need bottom sixers next season. I would also personally look for a Jenner trade, but that's not happening.
