<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LoganOllivier</b></div><div>St Louis winning the cup is going to be a disaster for so many teams.

1) St Louis has been a team that under performed for a long time its not a surprise. They were supposed to be one of the better teams in the west.
2) The whole west was a crap shoot this year. No one was really that strong.
3) Injuries and an off year by the Pens took out two favourites for the cup in the first round leading under dogs to over perform

It was a weird playoffs that saw a team everyone had written off beat a team in a great series. It could have gone either way in the final.

Now why its the worst thing for many GM's, because some dummies will think, all we need to do is get there, so lets do whatever we need to, to become a playoff team and then we can win the cup.

In reality, you need a great team to win the cup and there are only a handful of great teams in the NHL. Vancouver has some pieces but they are jumping the gun, Petterson isn't enough. Compare the Canucks to other top teams and they don't compare well, their defence is old and not great offensively (Hughes not withstanding), their depth is weak and they won't score enough outside of their top 2 lines. They need to draft and develop better and just didn't do that and instead are going to be okay but probably not good enough. Just like Edmonton.</div></div>

I don't think they are jumping the gun. I do not think we need to just make the playoffs to win the cup. We were affected with injuries all season and were only 10 points out of the playoffs. If Markstrom can keep playing like he did last year we have a great goalie who can steal games for us. We have a top six that maybe isn't as good as Vegas or Tampa but it can put up points and be viable in the league. In professional sports, you don't just draft and develop for 10 years doing nothing. While the Canucks won't win the cup this year, showing that they can contend and make the playoffs is good for the organization. No one wants to watch a team suck for 10 years in a row. For the next 3-4 youth will keep being injected in this lineup to beef up depth scoring. Players like Virtanen, Gaudette, Madden, Hoglander and Lind can all potentially add scoring in the coming years.

You talk about how you need a great team to win the cup. Canucks have the foundational pieces in Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, Hughes and Demko to build around. If you truly want better players to make them a "top team" you need to be able to attract top free agents aswell. If we added say Panarin, Pavelski or Lee would we be a "top team". The point is you can't just rebuild for 10 years and expect your team to instantly become amazing after that. Slowly a team will improve by building around it's core players and that's what this team is doing.
